Bonnie Roberts - The above photo was taken at Irene Latham's Poets in the Sky with Cupcakes, where Lynn Roberts (no kin) and I were pink twins. A I am promoting Lynn's new book, SOULS to KEEP, the cover of which is on the front of our spiffy pink sweat shirts, provided to us by Lynn's guy, David. That day we found out we were having a beautiful little girl and a few minutes later a doctor telling us we should terminate the pregnancy, something no mother wants to hear. He then told us that she had gastroschisis, club feet and a cyst in her brain and that most likely there was something very wrong with her but for us she was as perfect as they come and here to stay.A However, we did wanted to be prepared for whatever it was that was coming our way so decided to get an amniosistesis done to have as much info as we could before her arrival but it came back negative and the waiting game began. Before I knew, the appoinment was over and I was looking forward to the week after when I was going to be induce. When I was about to walk out the door a nurse called me back in to ask me if her liver was outside her body, which i had no idea, because there was nothing on my record.
The doctor then decided to get one last ultrasound done to make sure there wasnt a change of plans since I would have had to get a c-section if her liver was in fact outside her body. A I need pink to brighten up my face, and I love looking like a pink popsicle and don't mind as long as Lynn looks like one, too. Good news was that her liver was inside her body but only to find out that she wasnt breathing and skiping heartbeats.
Next thing I knew I had a whole bunch of nurses on me hooking me up to different machines and waiting on an ambulance to take me to the hospital. A It IS unusual, Irene, to have a new collection launch and reading in a Pumping Station Museum, but, hey--I like it. Definetely the most stressful experience Ive ever been thru but it all went away as soon as I heard her cry. I was so overwhelmed with love and happiness but that didnt last long, I knew something had gone wrong.
The doctor put her in my arms, asked for a camara to take a family picture and quickly took her to another room without even being able to get a good look at my own daughter.
When my husband finally came to the room, he told me she was on surgery and then going to the NICU. When they finally gave me the OK to go see her, more than 12 hours later, what happend I will never forget. A Here she is reading a poetic sky passage from SOULS to KEEP at Irene's launch of her latest poetry collection THE SKY BETWEEN US.
I came in and held her tiny little hand but within a few seconds I heard the long loud beep of a flatline coming from her monitor and my heart sinked.
Lynn Roberts read a poetic "sky" passage from her new novel during "open mic." A For those living in Birmingham, Alabama, you can now purchase a copy of Lynn's novel at Jim Reed's bookstore! I later found out a nurse had accidentaly overdose her with morfin and her 4 pound body didnt take it. The next day wasnt much better, thats when the doctor came in and told us about moebius and the geneticist gave us the whole "she wont be able to do this, this and that" speech. A Thank you, Irene, for such a creative, fun way of launching your book that gave so many of us a chance to share our poetry as well. Someone telling you, you would never see your child smile was definetely a hard pill to swallow. As happy as I was to finally be able to bring Gabby home, being a first time mother, I was scared out of my mind. I also feel I wasted so much time grieving over the things I didnt get to do as a first time mom, that I forgot to enjoy the perfect little baby I had in front of me.
A Irene treated many of her poet and writer friends by launching her new book with a "POETS in the SKY with CUPCAKES" celebration at a most unusual site, the Historic Cahaba Pumping Station Museum in Birmingham. Fast forward to 28 months, now my biggest regret is NOT enjoying every single second of this crazy beautiful ride.
She has had a couple of surgeries, few hospital stays and countless therapies but she is the happiest baby I know and that makes it all worth it.
She is a smart, silly, outgoing, beautiful and overall amazing little person and I wouldnt change her for the world. A If you want to find out how something that looks like a thunderstorm, feels like a thunderstorms, bends cornstalks in wind like a thunderstorm, is complete with "shredded clouds" and lightning strikes like a thunderstorm, but isn't EVEN a thunderstorm, read the book.
A It's a very good read, and you'll learn something about being an imperfect human and how it's okay, and, in fact, the kind of soul you want to keep.A I'm putting the last touches on Harry's book. A Reading through it tonight, I kept thinking, "What an amazing poet, an amazing human being." A Not all amazing poets are amazing human beings. A You would think poets would be, but some are just word crafters, and not people of love, insight, and inspiration.
A I think Mule on a Ferris Wheel is only going to publish people and poets like Harry and Jimmy. A Here in all its messiness, happiness, and occasional tumult is family life, the world of parents and children, of marriages ended and new ones begun, of the next generation claiming its place. A Looking at the different roles he has filled--husband, father, grandfather--the man in these poems cherishes and celebrates love while acknowledging the pain it can bring. A His 54-page thesis, "Travel for Agorophobics" will be published by Aldrich Press and out by next year! Murphy states that 90% of individuals polled have said they would prefer to die at home, surrounded by their loved ones. Murphy offers a view of death as something other than a "medical event" that need not take place in a sterile hospital and that the time before dying and death itself can be an important part of living in which closure, love, and forgiveness can take place and plans for what the dying person wishes must be put into writing for doctors, other caregivers, and family members.A The book's scope is far wider than these elements in taking a whole new look at dying and death. We can't even imagine what the landscape of Alabama literature would be, would have been without you and your labors of love in poetry.A Congratulations!
Bill Wilson, consultant with the Center for Congregational Health in Winston-Salem, will present on "The Realities of Ministry in the 21st Century." Lots of discussion and dialogue! A I need pink to brighten up my face, and I love looking like a pink popsicle and don't mind as long as Lynn looks like one, too.
