Xiaomi is a company built on quality and high standards, and the hardware of the new Mi4 shows just that, but the software situation could be better.
Xiaomi is a company we didn’t have a lot of experience with before last month, and understandably so. Back in July, Xiaomi announced the newest addition to its high-end smartphone lineup, the Mi4. With a steel band wrapping around the edges of the phone, it certainly shares some visual similarities with Apple’s last four generations of iPhones, and we feel it also bears some resemblance to the Nokia Lumia Icon. It’s a gorgeous display and our only two complaints are how warm the picture is in comparison to other current smartphones and the side visibility, which seems to dramatically taper-off at certain angles.
The first thing we noticed about this version of MIUI is that Google Play services are not pre-installed. However, the Mi Market was almost entirely in Chinese and virtually impossible to navigate.
Other Xiaomi smartphones come with Google Play services installed, so this issue is likely limited to the China-specific model. One of MIUI’s defining features is the lack of an application drawer – all applications reside on the home screens.
We lost count of how many times the phone completely froze and the touchscreen quit working.
The viewfinder software itself looks a bit dated, but it’s easy to learn and navigate. The single speaker along the bottom edge is the hurdle of the multimedia experience on the Mi4. Without proper network optimization, battery life is also subject to serious discrepancies. When Xiaomi announced the launch of much awaited flagship smartphone Mi4 in India, people expected to see a powerful smartphone beast complimented with a great work of craftsmanship. Though we didn’t ask the participants what really disappointed them, but after spending some time on the internet and reading few of the top reviews’ comments and feedback, it was crystal clear that Xiaomi Mi4 failed to reach the bar it had set by itself.
But the commencement of OnePlus One sales on the same day was not the sole reason people shied away from Xiaomi Mi4. As Xiaomi was racing against the time while its design engineers wanted to buy more time to make it work on 4G network without compromising on performance, the Apple of China – as Xiaomi is known – decided to introduce 3G only variant in India.
Overall, Engadget has rated Xiaomi Mi4 with 82 points, as compared to OnePlus One with 90 points. It the post it is also added that the new UI will include popular features from top ROMs such as CyanogenMod, ParanoidAndroid, Omni, and AOKP. The polycarbonate shell brings to mind the iPhone 5C, but the finish is matte rather than glossy, increasing grip in the hand. The Chinese company is only four years old and didn’t start expanding its business internationally until last year.
Its Mi3 handset from earlier this year has reportedly sold out in mere minutes on more than one occasion and Xiaomi replaced LG as the fifth-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world earlier this month. The specs and pricing seem great, but can Xiaomi pull it all together to provide the full package, an all-encompassing experience with classy hardware?
But to get caught up on such details in a market full of smartphones which are all rectangular slabs is to miss the point entirely – not to mention, a complete waste of time. The steel chassis is precision-machined through 40 different processes and 193 individual steps. Even the minor details, such as the SIM tray also being built form the same steel as the chassis, are made with care. It makes the phone unnecessarily slick while creating an unsightly contrast to the high-end steel around the edges. At five inches diagonally with a resolution of 1080p, it manages a respectable density of 441 pixels per inch.
That means no Google Play store, Gmail, Hangouts, Maps, or any other Google application available out of the box.
We discovered that (unofficially) installing Google Play services is actually very simple and can be done through the Mi Market in a matter of minutes. If history repeats itself, other global editions of this phone will likely ship with Google Play on-board. You must leave every application on a multitude of home screens or throw them all into folders for the slightest hint of organization.
Using the dedicated theme store application, thousands of themes can be purchased and downloaded. The more you dig through the settings, the more things you will find to tweak and customize. That said, there is a much darker side to MIUI, a side that’s filled with quirks, bugs, and glitches.
The capacitive buttons would still sort of work, but the phone was pretty much useless until you performed a hard reset by holding the power button for around 10 seconds. We installed two OTA updates in our time with the Mi4 and the issue was not resolved – it may have actually gotten a little worse with the most recent update.
For instance, pop-up applications like Link Bubble and the fill window in LastPass simply didn’t work at all. Essentially, the only difference is the number of features shown to you and how they’re displayed.

Colors were very saturated and it was quick to overexpose, but focusing happened in an instant.
Sure, it’s better than most front cameras and has several times the resolution, but most images were washed-out and lifeless. Thanks to the Snapdragon 801, gaming was very enjoyable, providing a smooth and lag-free experience. And we had no notable issues with the phone getting too hot, even as hard as we pushed it with gaming, benchmarking, and multitasking.
It can output a fair amount of volume, but the sound is tinny and muffled most of the time. Data speeds prove that, as we were limited to HSPA+ on T-Mobile here in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina.
Still, we can say, all things considered, we’ve been very impressed with the battery life of the Mi4. After shooting an entire comparison video with gaming, screen tests, and nearly an hour of screen-on time, the battery usage menu only listed the screen-on time as 55 seconds (this was likely due to the incessant freezing from switching themes). It’s packed full of plenty of useful features and comes with thousands of themes to choose from. If you want exceptional hardware for relatively cheap and can deal with some bugs – absolutely.
But after a month of Mi4 launch, looks like the device has failed to meet the expectations – at least in India. And, to make the situation worse for Xiaomi, OnePlus One changed its sales strategy in India.
While people were expecting the identical Mi4 specs that were launched in its homegrown market China, the company decided to introduce a rather scaled down model of the device. If you can make do with limited storage, aren’t looking forward to try 4G (to be realistic, it’ll take some time before going mainstream) and don’t want a phablet-sized device, the Mi 4 is your best bet.
Xiaomi took more than six months to bring Mi4 to India and all these months the company kept convincing users that engineers are busy in optimizing the device for the best performance in Indian scenario. The company reportedly decided to shift focus on Mi Note to make a 4G enabled device for India.
The impeccable construction makes Xiaomi Mi4 the best hardware seen  in all year, but people are expecting more value-for-money from smartphones these days. I already heavily dislike iOS's design language, and plastering that over Android only makes Android a worst experience (in my opinion).
Xiaomi uploaded a video introducing its manufacturing process – and it’s just as impressive as it sounds. Seeing as MIUI 6 isn’t ready for consumer release yet, we kept MIUI 5 installed and opted out of MIUI 6 … for now. Using this method, we were able to install all our previously purchased applications, games, and other content.
After spending upwards of an hour getting everything into a corresponding folder, we were frustrated to learn that when you delete an icon or folder, everything else will shift, completely throwing off the previous layout – annoying, to say the least. These allow users to greatly alter the appearance of the phone’s UI, from lock and home screens to the notification shade, and even the settings application.
For example, there are standard features like guest mode and do-not-disturb, but you can also customize what long-pressing a hardware button will do, or how the settings toggles in the notification shade appear – as a bar at the bottom or as a dedicated page.
This happened quite frequently and seemed completely random in most cases, but was very easy to replicate by changing themes or the notification shade layout.
And applications which require location services regularly could not detect our correct location.
Xiaomi has only added functionality since then, but its appearance, despite the thousands of themes, hasn’t progressed beyond the overbearing and overproduced Android interfaces of 2012. Saturation is a little on the heavy side – which is par for the course in smartphone image sensing – and there’s plenty of detail for cropping in post.
There was also some stabilization software at work, which caused warping and distortion in the image, and the audio, while not bad, made the videos almost unbearable to listen to due to incessant clipping.
We found some competing front-facing cameras to be better than the Mi4’s, but this one will definitely do for high-quality selfies and video calls. The handset would get a little warm, sure, but not what we would consider hot to the touch.
Music playback was okay, but when playing mostly spoken videos on YouTube and movies, we’d suggest opting for headphones. It comes with a fixed 3,080mAh battery, which easily lasted us around a day and a half of use with over four hours of screen-on time per charge.
If you’re outside China, you will have to import the Mi4 to your country through a third-party retailer like 28mobile, which may mean paying extra taxes. Of course, once it officially launches in other countries, the phone will become more affordable for those outside China.
Otherwise, we’d recommend something a little more reliable and refined – the LG G3, HTC One M8, or Samsung Galaxy S5 are great places to start. According to an online poll, 65% of participants feel that OnePlus One (OPO) has an edge over Xiaomi Mi4. The Company adopted invite-free sales model right at the time when Xiaomi was busy in setting up its stage on Flipkart. The missing 4G capability, launch of 16 GB storage variant apparently hurt the people the most.
If you want to store your entire music library on your phone, want a big phone and like stock Android with high customizability, look no further: the OnePlus One it is.
However, after over six-month long wait, the company apparently found it difficult to meet the benchmark with its 4G capability in India.
As Xiaomi has just launched the 64 Gb variant of Mi4, hope it could win over OnePlus One now.
And it feels extremely sturdy in the hand – no amount of gripping or squeezing the phone caused any squeaking or creaking in the hardware. It also has a wide brightness range, stretching from barely visible to nearly painful to look at.

And, of course, Xiaomi provides all the necessary applications to completely replace Google’s services suite entirely. Most of the themes are premium, requiring between one and six Mi Credits, the currency used in Xiaomi’s stores.
You can also customize what the in-line buttons on headphones do, what the notification LED can do, and more. Simple mode is more concerned with things like filters and shooting modes, like panorama or HDR.
We shot a few HDR photos on an overcast day and it made the photo pop without a noticeable halo effect – although it was obviously an HDR photo.
But if you want a refocusing feature similar to that of the Duo Camera, it does work quite well.
Scrolling, pinch-zooming, and opening or switching applications all happened smoothly and quickly. That was through moderately heavy testing, playing graphically intensive games like Modern Combat 5, watching YouTube videos, browsing Reddit and Twitter, emailing, and texting.
But right now, even with import taxes, the phone is cheaper than most no-contract, high-end smartphones. More than 1,000 people participated in the poll and OnePlus One wins over Mi4 with a big margin, with 698 votes in its favor.
We expressed how nice the phone’s hardware was in our unboxing video – our first ever hands-on experience with the device.
Not once did it offer a nearby server in Virginia or North Carolina like it typically does. We were happy with more than a few photos taken with the Mi4, but there were just as many – if not more – that turned out dull, blurry, or out-of-focus. However, the home screen showed signs of stuttering and lag quite often, particularly with the animation for opening a folder. In-call audio through the earpiece speaker was fine and callers mentioned no issues hearing us, but we wouldn’t call the quality anything but average. Therefore, a company has to go through a design change process to make its device 4G compatible. Besides, the closest competitor of Mi4, OnePlus One introduced the 4G capable 16 GB variant at a very competitive price. Personally, I’d have preferred this to be along the bottom edge, like it is with the Galaxy S6. MIUI is like the Windows Vista of Android versions: there is a security prompt for everything. This is something we didn’t expect to see on such a high-end phone that performed so well in almost every other area.
This banishes the issue of plugging the power lead in the wrong way around, and also means the phone supports faster data transfer (assuming the other device also has Type-C) and quick charging. There's no fingerprint scanner, nor NFC inside, so the Mi4C won't support Google's contactless Android Pay system when it rolls out next year. The lack of NFC is disappointing when you consider how long it has been commonplace in other Android handsets, but Xiaomi has claimed in the past that very few people actually use it. That might have been true a few years ago, but thanks to Apple's efforts in the contactless payment arena, it's about to become a pretty essential feature – and it's a shame the Mi4C doesn't have it.The lack of a microSD card slot may also put off some buyers. For an LCD panel the contrast is excellent, with deep, convincing blacks mixing neatly with brighter, more vibrant colours. For a phone that costs this little, it's a remarkable display in terms of quality.Xiaomi has included a sunlight mode, which makes the screen easier to see outdoors.
In general it works well – although the shininess of the glass that covers the display does sometimes make it hard to see past the glare and reflections. While we're on the topic of glass, it's worth pointing out that Xiaomi hasn't specified what material has been used here – there's no mention of Gorilla Glass anywhere in the specification list. While this doesn't preclude the use of some form of protective covering, I noticed that the screen on my review unit has already picked up quite a deep scratch, so it might be prudent to treat the phone with kid gloves. One feature I really liked – which was disabled in the options menu by default – is the ability to double-tap the display to wake up the handset. I'm amazed that more mobile manufacturers don't include this as standard in their products.Xiaomi Mi4C – MIUI 7Xiaomi, like the vast majority of Android OEMs, places its own UI skin over the top of Google's mobile OS. MIUI is one of the more comprehensive skins on the market, boasting its own user account system and marketplace, and is now up to version 7, which looks more like Apple's iOS than ever before. Xiaomi has been criticised in the past for slavishly copying the iPhone maker's every move, and if you've used iOS recently then you'll spot a lot of similarities here. There's no app drawer, as you'd find on most Android phone.
Another "borrowed" idea is alert badges on icons, denoting unread messages or notifications. Many other elements of the UI are stylistically similar, such as the Wallpaper settings menu.Such shameless replication of ideas would be annoying were it not for the fact that they all work so well.
Xiaomi has combined the best elements of Android – such as a more robust notification system and wider user customisation (you can apply user-generated themes to the UI and even create your own) – with the best aspects of iOS to deliver a Frankenstein-style OS that offers an intuitive and appealing experience. Every element is meticulously designed and rendered, making stock Android look a bit dull and uninspired in comparison. New to the Mi4C is the concept of "Edge Controls", which allow you to perform certain actions by double-tapping the side of the phone with your finger.
You can set this feature to take you backwards through the UI, which is by far the most useful application. Most units imported to the West by Chinese resellers will come with the former installed, as development ROMs can easily be hacked and packaged with a wide range of useful (and not so useful) apps. The main reason, however, is so that Western users can gain access to Google's suite of programs, which don't come with the Mi4C as standard.Even so, you'll want to flash the global stable ROM the moment your phone arrives, which is a simple matter of downloading the file to the phone's internal storage and using the MIUI Updater app to flash the update.
You'll lose Google apps, but it will also remove any bothersome bloatware that will almost certainly have been included by the ROM creator, leaving you with a more stable version of MIUI 7.It also means you’ll have an unrooted phone – out of the box, my Mi4C review unit was rooted and therefore wouldn't play nice with some of my essential downloads, such as the Barclays mobile banking app. While the entire process takes only a few minutes, it might be a bit beyond casual users, so keep this in mind when mulling over a potential purchase.
