Following through my post on the most promising spring series this year, it’s time to re-evaluate that list. Some were not as good as I originally thought, while some proved to get better as the episodes roll out.
Season 2 is beginning to look a lot better than the first and that’s really saying something since the first season is regarded as one of the best anime in the past couple of years. The debt-ridden butler continues to attract more new suitors while getting into even more trouble.
And Hayate in female a girl’s seifuku and miko costume = priceless and always more than welcomed!
A nice build up between the relation of the main character and his love interest that was suddenly and unexpectedly pulled to a halt. Welkin is still very much a mystery and no one can really tell what he’s really thinking. There are few game-based anime that are good or memorable, and even though it might be too early to say this,Valkyria Chronicles looks set to be one of the best adaptations in recent years.
It’s really interesting how the story started off with Teito being in a military academy where students are able to use some sort of ability that manifests some sort of runic words and use it as a weapon against enemies. But the setting quickly changed and Teito found himself in the care of a church said to be protected by the 7 ghosts. 07-Ghost keeps coming up with new questions as well but it seems that everyone involved in it knows whats going on except Teito.
The anime is beginning to take a slightly different path than the first volume of the manga I’ve read, but that might not be a bad thing. K-ON has a cast of likable characters, there’s the rich and well mannered Mugi (who apparently has a thing for yuri), the energetic little devil Ritsu, the complete airhead Yui and the moe moe kyun~ Mio. K-ON is without a doubt a great show, but I have a feeling that its popularity shot up mostly thanks to Mio. I really was expecting a lot more from K-ON in terms of the animation quality especially since KyoAni is behind it. Kugimiya Rie is busy again as usual this season with 3 very different roles:A‚A  the rich loli Nagi, the living armor Al and the mahjong player equipped with a fang, Yuuki. One of the things I liked about FMA was the great supporter of mini skirts for uniform Roy Mustang. But as long as it’s not going down the exact same route the original series did, FMA Brotherhood will be an interesting watch. Salutes to Kenji Utsumi for still being able to pull off an awesome Major Armstrong at nearly the age of 72, one of the oldest seiyuus around today. Maybe my expectations were too high after reading and hearing good things about K-ON, but I was slightly disappointed after watching it. If the first episode is anything to go by, the original summary that this series is about a boy and a ghost girl doesn’t do any justice to it. But all in all it’s still a good year, especially for sequels and most importantly, the starting point where studios and anime companies finally begins to see the bigger picture and began to stream anime online for free or a small fee. As usual, this list is based on what I’ve watched this year (that was released this year) and since I did not get pass episode 4 of Macross Frontier, it will not be on the list no matter how good you say it is. Megumi Hayashibara returns along with the others to voice Lina Inverse and gang in Slayers Revolution.
Overall the series was just as I remembered, although a bit disappointing at the same time due to the lack of interesting developments. Admittedly there are a lot of boring parts, especially at the beginning of Doki, but it’s been going uphill ever since Nadeshiko Nagihiko returned.
Nadeshiko was the one initially pushing the plot forward and is now pretty much doing the same thing again.
To Aru Majutsu no Index does show a lot of promise to be great despite its terrible pacing.
I still don’t know why Hayate is the combat butler, especially since he rarely do any actual combat.
Hayate makes use of plenty of cliches, puns and parodies but at the same time maintain a fine balance of original story and insanity that doesn’t make the series feel like its pushing it too much.
The first episode wasn’t really the first episode, but more of a chaotic piece of randomness put together to attract the attention of the anime community. The plot is as thick as a slice of cheese, there are no character development, and everything looks as if the director simply dreamed up of a story the night before the episode script was due.
Initially I was skeptical of what Gonzo would release to the world as one of two of the first ever anime being streamed online for free right after the episode is released in Japan.
I missed Zero no Tsukaima last year and did a marathon of the first 2 season before starting to watch Princesses no Rondo.
One thing that had struck me as odd since the start is how Saito so easily adapted to his life with Louise and never really misses home as much as he would like to make others believe.
While After Story was not as good as the first season, After Story acts more like an epilogue than an actual sequel season.
Look pass how Gundam 00 is all about the mobile suits power rather than pilot skills most of the time, how a more powerful MS or upgrade appears every few episode and how new technology just appear out of thin air, and you’ve got one of the most impressive mecha anime of the year. There are more character development so far in the second season than the entire first season combined, something I ranted about before.
Maybe it’s just me, but g00 s2 is beginning to feel a bit like Code Geass in how the writers are trying to screw the cast one way or another.
Suzaku, an ally who turned into your worse enemy ended up being the only person you can rely on in the end. The Order of the Black Knights, one of the most powerful and influential organization built from scratch by Zero, turned against him without batting an eyelid. And the ressurection of cast members who long thought dead, but as the saying goes, if there is no dead body being buried, no one really died.
The final twist of Zero Requiem was totally unexpected, having Zero to finish off Lelouch himself.
Here, in my final post this year, I will go through my top 10 anime of the year, the best of 2007.
This is probably one of the most overlooked anime this year and the reason is probably due to the terrible, horrible more unique character design. Truly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and YNSH is a lot better than anyone would think just by looking at the character design and plot summary. I would have actually went with Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, but thought this would be more appropriate since it’s released this year. There hasn’t been any decent Pokemon since the 2nd movie, but Lucario and the Mystery of Mew really impressed me a lot.
While the movie focused on the 2 legendaries from the Diamond and Pearl games, the most intriguing Pokemon is neither the God of Time nor the God of Space, but the infamous Darkrai.
Even though I started off liking Tomoyo the best, that is quickly changing as I’m beginning to find Kyou much more attractive. Good character design, great soundtrack and a very solid plot thats hard to predict, it’s no wonder that Nana became a phenomenon in Japan and many other countries.
Bee Train almost never follows the manga’s plot properly, often adding plenty of fillers or even changing entire scenes altogether which was why Tsubasa Chronicle was quite disappointing on most parts.
It’s too bad that Miki had only transformed once with Amu to become Amulet Spade so far. I’m pretty sure I read in a few places that Shugo Chara would be 52 episodes long, so despite my initial thoughts that it would be too long, now I only can hope that it will reach that length. From school bullies to thugs to an entire underground organisation and it’s still far from over, the basic plot reminds me of Kotaro Makaritoru.
There’s almost never a dull moment as the series if full of funny moments and awesome fighting scenes.
Kenichi is one of the few series this year that had grabbed me from the very beginning and had me wanting for more even after it had ended. Admittedly, the above screenshot was what got me into watching Lucky Star and I absolutely did not regret it. It’s really surprising how you think you caught all the jokes in any episodes of Lucky Star only to find out later that half the gags had walked pass without you realizing anything had happened at all.
The opening theme is the closest rival to Hare Hare Yukai to date and it’s also sang by (almost) the same group of people.
One of Lucky Star’s biggest draw is the fact that its the closest slice-of-life series that really depicts our daily life and conversation almost to the dot and puts a smile on your face the next time you find yourself in the same situation again, which really happens a lot in my case. Up until a couple of months ago, I was certain that Code Geass would become my favourite anime of the year.
It started off innocently enough but would have had you hooked by the end of the first episode, all thanks to that sudden change of facial expression by Lelouch Lamperouge, or more precisely, Lelouch Vi Britannia was revealed to be his true name.
As 0rion pointed out, Code Geass is the most spectacular trainwreck you’ve ever seen. With Lelouch and Suzaku finally facing off with each other, and the trigger finally pulled, it makes one wonder how the heck can Code Geass continue for another full season through that mess. The gags are almost never reused, unless you count Mako-chan but even then there are always something new. Minami-ke overtook Code Geass as my favourite anime of the year simply because I enjoyed it much more than any other anime this year. With that, 2007 comes to a close, and 2008 promises even more great anime such as the long awaited continuation for both Code Geass and Suzumiya Haruhi. Before I go into the top 10, there are 2 anime which, although I really liked, did not make the cut for the top 10. TSUBASA RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE is currently my favourite manga, and because of that I love Tsubasa Chronicle (anime) as well. I would probably say it’s no exaggeration that Utawarerumono feels more like an epic story unfolding beautifully and gracefully in front of the viewers. The storyline was very compelling as well, with each character having their own motives unseen by others, how friends turned to foe and foe turned to friends. Even though Ueki discovered his level-2 Jingi ability, which is the ability to use more than one Jingi at the same time, his true potential did not show until the battle against Barou.
Saya recognized the good in Train and they became close friends despite Train’s initial rejection.
I like how the story always seem to be able to throw something at Inuyasha without making it feel repetitive. Each arc in Inuyasha usually proves to be quite lengthy, but it doesn’t feel rushed or draggy either. As I’ve mentioned in my review of Eureka 7 before, the cast of characters are very varied yet at the same time lovable. When I was first introduced to Ouran High School Host Club, I would never had imagined it to become one of my top listed anime. Each character is easily classified and is done so at the very beginning when Tamaki introduced everyone in the club to Haruhi.
There is no major plot involved, just the daily lives of the host club members but it’s always entertaining to watch. Unless I forgot and left out some anime that should be on this list, since I’m quite forgetful, the list will probably stay this way and not change. He asked another Pfizer chemist, Willard Welch, to synthesize some previously unexplored tametraline derivatives.
Welch then prepared stereoisomers of this compound, which were tested in vivo by animal behavioral scientist Albert Weissman. Saizen is a growth hormone treatment therapy for adult men and women with hormonal deficiency (AGHD) using bio-identical somatropin [rDNA origin] injections.

Homeopathic individualized medicines versus fluoxetine for moderate to severe depression: double-blind, randomized non-inferiority trial. And the OAV suddenly made more sense after watching the first few episodes of the second season. Even Maria was tempted to give him some Valentines chocolate, which ended in some unexpected and really brutal chocolate destruction from the usually kind and gentle Maria. And for once they actually had proper seiyuus who could speak English to actually speak it! There’s just too little time to build up a strong enough emotion to actually do that.
From screenshots of the game, it looks like the style is actually taken from the game itself.
What exactly are the 7 ghosts are still kept hidden but I can only guess that the 3 bishops are very closely related to them. She is Tsukasa with a brain and will be one of the toughest competitor in the upcoming Saimoe. True enough, each episode just gets better and better.I was afraid that the whole series might take place in the crappy abyss, simply because it would get boring real fast. I had really enjoyed xxxHolic’s mahjong episode and it was then I found out about Saki.
I play mahjong for fun every now and then with a few friends, and it’s always a barrel of laughter.
Animation is pretty fluid as expected from KyoAni, but I’m sure they could have done a lot better especially the colours.
She’s just so cute and adorable, a lot different compared to when she was a demon knight.
Like how Pandora was curious enough to ignore Zeus’s warning and opened the jar to unleash evil and misery to the world, I find myself attracted to what evil and misery Pandora Hearts will unleash.
Secret societies, religious wars, scientific experiments, a mecha hidden in wormhole stuffed inside a small metal casing -Asura Cryin’ might actually end up as one of the best this season. Shana Second would have made the list too if it didn’t suck so bad for the first 3 quarters of the season. They managed to keep true to the series, although they could have really done more to keep the plot interesting.
The alternating episodes of action and story development leading towards the next action episode feels so painfully slow.
It feels like a darker version of Law of Ueki, but at the same time it’s also something that has never been done before from what I know. There was an alternate, real, first episode that appeared on NicoNico for a short while before being removed for some reason. The seemingly bizarre randomness of plot and twist made the Tower of Druaga what it is that we came to love.
The relationship between Saito and Louise reminds me so much of Yuji and Shana but maybe that’s because they are voiced by the same pair of seiyuus. It was like an updated version of Gundam Wing and for most of the first season, g00 was just bad. 00 Gundam is now the most haxed MS ever with its quantum dissolving ability, although I still think it will lose against Strike Freedom and especially Infinite Justice.
Kallen, the person who no one believed would have turned against Lelouch, did just that without first seeking the proper truth. What surprises me is that no one wondered why unathletic Zero was suddenly able to get pass all those guards and single handedly take out Emperor Lelouch. There are definitely a lot of great new anime that came out this year, and the slice-of-life comedy took many by surprise, making the top 5 or even top 3 of many fan’s list. Everyone’s list is undoubtedly different since no one watches all the same anime and have the same tastes. The storyline is quite random at times and the plot loves to exaggerate on the series theme which focuses on self-acceptance and beauty. Although, it would take a couple of episodes to get used to the girly looking bunch of fugly guys who are supposedly the most gorgeous bunch of guys you’ll ever see. While Pokemon is rather repetitive with a very predicted plot, it does still have its charm.
The starting was just too slow but the flashbacks had ended for both Nana, it really became interesting. I only wish that there would be a continuation, perhaps in the form of an OAV, to complete the story and bring Nana back to everyone. But I really do love how they brought the first episode to life, if only they had been more consistent.
When the series just started off I had brushed it off as something that will not hold my interest for long, and even called it a crossover between Sailormoon and Care Bears.
But the similarities ends there and I have found that Kenichi’s plot is ways ahead and much more enjoyable.
Starting off by stamina training and learning the basic stances for Jujutsu, Chinese kenpo, Karate, Muay-Thai kickboxing and throw in some weapons training along the way and you can really follow along Kenichi’s growth up to the point where he finally learned the Seikuuken from the Elder. I know that the manga is already pretty far ahead with better story arcs, so there might be a good chance of a sequel. I consider myself somewhat fortunate for only picking up the series after the last 2 episode for the season had been aired.
It’s one that is so well pulled off, you end up really hating what happened, but loving every moment of it. Or in my case, if my heart and will is strong enough to pull me through another season without killing myself. It’s much more hilarious than Lucky Star and Azumanga Daioh put together and had me rolling all over the floor every week without fail. Even for my 2006 favourites I had chose to put a series which I enjoyed more, Ouran Host Club, at the top instead of the great Suzumiya Haruhi. I didn’t watch every single anime that were released, nor did I watch every single popular ones such as Code Geass (although I plan to start on that sometime soon), but here are my top 10 favourite anime of 2006. It should have been in my Top 10 Funniest Anime list but it slipped my mind while I was writing that.

The number of episodes in HnC2 is less than half of the first season, which is probably why it didn’t feel as fulfilling.
There’s something about Ichihara Yuuko that draws you in as she seems to know about anything and everything.
The story started off simple enough, about a masked man who forgot who he really was and was nursed back to health by a medicine lady and her granddaughter.
The momentum and suspense builds up towards the end of the series and the climax just exploded. Truth be told, if I hadn’t known there was a King Arthur in the series, I might have guessed Saber was really Joan of Arc.
Unfortunately, I didn’t really like how it ended, with Saber returning to her true place and time. An anime about a boy who could turn trash into trees did not seem at all interesting to me at first. Maybe it’s my fascination with cats and assassins but I really liked Black Cat a lot. It was due to her influence that Train decided to leave the Chronos Numbers to live as a free, stray cat.
There are plenty of comedy and action after the first arc as Train leaves his past behind him, but is then forced to face them once more as he hunts down Creed and the Apostles of The Stars. I believe it’s one of the most popular anime around for the past few years, and rightly so.
And after each arc we are treated with some breaks in the story by having a couple of episodes with Kagome and Inuyasha in the present time.
This would have been number 1 if I hadn’t decided that I enjoyed the other choice more and watched it a lot more times than I did with Haruhi. The Suzumiya Haruhi fever had never died even after the first season had ended over a year ago. The Hitachiin twins started off as being the pair I hate the most in the club, but ended up as my favourite because I find them the funniest and most interesting of the bunch. Every character also gets their turn to shine, even the quiet Mori-senpai despite the short season of only 26 episodes.
Perhaps another reason why this anime had left such a big impression on me is due to the ending. But just in case, do let me know if you think there are other anime that should be on the list and I’ll re-consider the list. Eden of the East will easily be one of the best shows this year if it keeps up the momentum. Cross Game did more than that with actually leaving a hole in your heart and the feeling that something really important has suddenly gone missing. My only conclusion is that Japanese mahjong uses a very different scoring system compared to the rest of the world.
There are still a few shows I’m trying to catch like Hatsukoi Limited, 07 Ghost and Eden of the East. However, the manga was difficult to find and I only managed to get a few chapters of it, which discouraged me from reading. It looks interesting enough, but at the same time it feels like a ticking timebomb waiting to blow up and go very wrong. You can easily tell it looks different from other shows but personally I think it looks pretty good. It’s just I find that there were a lot more choices I had to really evaluate to stick into the top 10 last year than this year.
But since this is basically just the first half, there’s still a chance for Slayers to bounce back in Evolution-R.
But otherwise it’s a pretty good series, although Touma really needs to do learn some new tricks other than rushing into things and depending on his Imagine Breaker which seems to be getting more and more useless with the newer enemies.
Magic and science put together has always been an interesting formula especially if done right, and this show is heading down the right way. It was unfortunate that Kyou didn’t get her own arc since Tomoyo even had her own special alternate ending. But the biggest question still remains, is Lelouch still alive somehow in the World of C, just as his mother, Marianne, was? There are many series which I haven’t watched yet, most notably Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which I will definitely pick up as soon as possible. They stuck with the manga very consistently and it already started to hit it off with me the moment the conversation revealed that they had just arrived from Rekord country.
These are also rated based on episodes that were shown in 2006 and does not necessary represent the series as a whole if there were any episodes shown before or after 2006. Digimon Savers, however, got me hooked again although I still feel the original 2 were the best of the Digimon series.
While I love the manga and would not hesitate to put it in the top 10, the anime was not as nice (maybe because I’ve read the manga) and does not feel that it really belongs in the top 10. From protecting the village, to seeking vengance, to liberating the country and then to even play a part in a world war. Three of my favourite fight scenes are Saber vs Assassin’s final confrontation, Archer vs Berserker and Saber vs Gilgamesh. I also enjoyed how all the Flame Haze, Crimson Lords and Crimson Denizens have their own unique title that pretty much describes themselves. It was only around the time when Robert appeared himself that the series started to grab my interest.
From a seemingly innocent journey of searching for the sacred jewel shards, mysterious enemies and plots started to unfold, revealing an evil that had engulfed Inuyasha since even before he was sealed by Kikyo. Sure, Renton started off as an annoying country kid, but one of the main reason why I liked this anime is how each and every character develops from one stage to another.
Not the mechas, not the soundtrack, not the design and animation and not the overall plot to save the planet from certain doom.
We hear his thoughts, his contradictions and reaction of Suzumiya Haruhi almost like how we would have seen it if someone as absurd as Suzumiya Haruhi were to be placed right in front of us. Most anime have poor or sub-par ending, but Ouran High School Host Club has the best ending I’ve seen in a very long time. Arch Gen Psychiatry -- Early Coadministration of Clonazepam With Sertraline for Panic Disorder, July 2001, Goddard et al. Saizen HGH injections are used by endocrinologists and hormone physicians for HGH therapy treatments.Saizen® can help adults with growth hormone deficiency to alleviate symptoms caused by menopause, andropause, and hormonal imbalance. But the season is starting out better than I thought, and here are 8 shows that are standing out so far. So when Saki was announced to make its debut as an anime this season, it easily became one of the series I looked forward to most. One of the most impressive looking series that came this season with a cast of likable characters.
The runaway vehicle gag that keeps aiming for either sensei or Ninomiya-kun is probably the most repeated joke in the series but it was also pulled off beautifully and was not overused. The reason why Yakitate Japan didn’t make the list for my top 10 anime of 2006 is because only the Yakitate 9 arc was shown in 2006.
She, like Clow Reed, believes that there is no such thing as coincidence in this world, only the inevitable or hitsuzen. It’s very rare to see such a smooth progression from one plot to another without making it looked rushed or weird.
Although Shana’s title was inherited, it fits her perfectly once she transfroms and her hair starts to glow red as if on fire. Unfortunately, he was still weaker than Robert himself and would have perished if Kobasen had not appeared to stop the battle. It is like watching an ugly caterpillar slowly going through the metamorphoses stages to become a beautiful butterfly in the end. Sure, those are important factors, but take the characters and their growth and you have a stale anime that is not unlike everything else being thrown around.
This allows viewers to relate to Kyon directly and is probably how Haruhiism began to take over the world. There is a need for large-scale longitudinal data on treatment utilization and outcomes, stress, emotion, and pain. And personally, the Yakitate 9 arc wasn’t nearly as good as the Rookie Tournament arc and the Monaco Cup arc.
Not to mention the Hare Hare Yukai dance fever ever since the Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekiso live event.
While there are no news regarding a sequel, it is definitely a possibility since there are many more materials in the manga that has yet been animated. Whereas, the effect of vitamin C on conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) of tumor cells has been documented, the mechanism of vitamin C induced increase in tumor cell response to PDT is unclear. In this report we demonstrate the presence of vitamin C during photo-oxidation of MC540 significantly increases its apoptotic activity in tumor cells. Interestingly, we observed that the presence of vitamin C during photo-oxidation of MC540 only and not its addition to a prior photo-exposed mixture to MC540 is critical for its enhanced sensitivity.
These findings provide impetus to the approach in developing ROS generating small molecule compounds with potent apoptosis inducing activity. These data could have implications in the use of vitamin C in photo-sensitizer-mediated reactions with the view to favorably tailoring the cancer cell milieu for efficient apoptotic execution. Many patients are still not discussing their CAM use with their doctors and are using CAM alongside their conventional medicines, thereby increasing the likelihood for potential interactions.

Electrodermal measures as clinical markers: Jing-point electrical impedance in adolescent women with chronic pelvic pain. Consequently, skin electrical measures at Jing points are commonly obtained and interpreted for diagnostic purposes.
Denise Adams, University of Alberta, 1047 RTF Building, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2E1, Canada. The objective of this study is to determine whether electrodermal measures at Jing-points are associated with clinical outcomes in adolescents with chronic pelvic pain in a randomized, sham-controlled acupuncture trial. Methods: We recruited 18 adolescent women aged 13 to 22 years of age suffering from chronic pelvic pain and laparoscopically diagnosed with Stage I-III endometriosis. Using a Hibiki-7 device, normalized electrical impedance values were obtained at all 24 Jing-points for each treatment session.
Phase II: CAM research networks in Canada and the US will notify CAM providers of this study, so they may alert patients. Left-right asymmetry and measures for statistical dispersion (standard deviation and Gini coefficient) of Jing-point impedance values were calculated.
Parents or legal guardians may self-identify and reply on behalf of patients under 18 year of age if they meet the criteria for Phase I. With a generalized estimating equation method, we evaluated the association between the electrodermal-derived measures and clinical outcomes while accounting for treatment designation and time. Phase III: The methods for phase II were utilized but CAM associations and training organizations were substituted for CAM research networks. The majority of the cases involved the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine to improve quality of life. Preliminary analyses indicate that, over time, subjects in the active acupuncture arm were more likely to have reduced left-right asymmetry and statistical dispersion of Jing-point measures compared to subjects in the sham-control arm. Further analyses with multivariable models will be performed to assess whether this difference is statistically significant for each electrodermal measure.
The chiropractic care of children with otitis media: a systematic review of the literature utilizing whole systems research evaluation and meta-synthesis. Joel Alcantara, International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, 327 N Middletown Rd, Media, PA 19063. Key words were otitis media and related words (ie, acute otitis media, otitis media with effusion, ear infections, etc) AND chiropractic.
A narrative review of the literature was performed and augmented with a meta-synthesis of the literature with a focus on chiropractic management and the application of a whole systems research (WSR) evaluation. Results: Our systematic review revealed 20 articles consisting of 6 case reports, 5 case series, 1 retrospective cohort, 2 prospective cohorts, 2 reviews of the literature, 2 commentaries, 1 survey study and 1 prospective, parallel-group, observer-blinded, randomized feasibility study. Due to the lack of higher-level research design, a meta-analysis of the literature was not possible. This included the use of otoscopy and tympanogram to provide objective pretreatment and comparative outcome measures. Eighty-nine percent of respondents reported treating pediatric patients; patients under the age of 17 made up 12% of chiropractic and 20% of both naturopathic and osteopathic patients. Activator, Gonstead, Toftness, Chiropractic Biophysics, and Diversified Techniques were utilized with an emphasis on the upper cervical spine (the C1 or C2 vertebral bodies). Approximately two-thirds of both osteopaths and naturopaths disagree or strongly disagree that immunizations are safe compared to one-third of chiropractors.
One paper described utilization of cranial technique, 2 papers described a dietary intervention, and 2 papers utilized soft-tissue massage to augment spinal manipulative therapy. Fifteen studies were amenable to the WSR evaluation resulting in a score of 7.06 from a maximum of 11. The immunizations of most concern to the 3 professions included MMR, varicella, influenza, DPTP, and hepatitis. The most common reasons for concern were related to safety, including that vaccines may contain dangerous ingredients, may produce side effects, and may be linked to future problems such as neurological damage. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights the need for more higher-level research designs in addition to incorporating new methodologies (ie, whole systems research) reflective of the holistic and vitalistic clinical and theoretical framework of chiropractic. The chiropractic care of children with enuresis: a systematic review of the literature utilizing whole systems research evaluation. Significantly more naturopaths advised parents against vaccinations (27%), compared to 10% of chiropractors, and 12% of osteopaths (P=.0002). Joel Alcantara, International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, 327 North Middletown Rd, Media, PA 19063. There was no significant difference between groups for those advising parents in favor of vaccinations (15% C, 14% N, 6% O) (P=.1143). Key words were enuresis, nocturnal enuresis, bedwetting as well as related words AND chiropractic.
A narrative review of the literature was performed and augmented with an evaluation using WSR evaluation. Results: Our systematic review revealed 7 articles meeting the eligibility criteria for review. Four of the 7 papers involve case reports describing the care of children aged 8 to 14 years with primary complaints of nocturnal enuresis.
Spinal manipulative therapy involved the use of Toggle recoil, Sacro-Occipital Technique, Activator Methods, Gonstead Technique, and Diversified Technique to address primarily segmental dysfunctions in the lumbosacral spine. We conducted a systematic review to assess the nature and severity of adverse events associated with pediatric acupuncture. A large prospective cohort study (N=171) demonstrated improvement in wet nights per week from baseline following 2 weeks of care. In a randomized clinical trial, within-group comparison of pretreatment and comparative rates of enuresis subjects demonstrated an improvement. However, the study was fraught with research design issues such as randomization and biostatistics.
Six of the 7 studies were amenable to WSR evaluation and resulted in a scoring of 7.33 from a maximum possible score of 11 points. One reviewer screened all articles, while the second reviewed all excluded articles to ensure that no article was inappropriately excluded.

Full articles of potentially relevant references were retrieved and assessed by two independent reviewers. The use of Whole Systems Research provides promise in contributing to evidence-based practice and reflects the holistic and vitalistic chiropractic approach to patient care. Results: Seven thousand, two hundred sixty-two potentially relevant articles were identified. Eleven of these studies included adults as the majority of patients; for these studies the age of the patient experiencing the adverse event was never reported. Most of the adverse events that have been identified in children were mild and included pain, bruising, and worsening of symptoms. The few adverse events rated as moderate or serious included one pneumothorax, 2 infections, and 2 cases of complications from needles left in the body. Methods: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Life University (Atlanta, Georgia).
A 26-item questionnaire was sent to 9000 subscribers of an online newsletter from Midwifery Today Magazine. The first domain identified demographics (midwife credentials, age, years in practice, and place of practice). The second domain queried participants regarding their formal and postgraduate training on the subject of chiropractic. The third domain attempted to identify their experience (ie, positive or negative experience) with chiropractic personally and professionally as it pertains to pregnancy and infant care. The fourth domain asked their opinion about the safety of chiropractic care for pregnant and pediatric patients. The fifth domain surveyed their knowledge regarding the scope of practice of chiropractic for pregnant and pediatric patients. The respondent ranged in age from 41 to 50 years with practice experience ranging from 6 to 10 years. With respect to their training on chiropractic, 31% (n=57) reported receiving formal education (ie, during midwifery education) on the subject of chiropractic. Fifty-five of the 157 who did not indicated receiving some education on chiropractic through continuing education seminars.
With respect to the midwife responders’ experience with chiropractic, 95% (n=176) admitted to making a professional referral to a chiropractor with 73% (n=137) having referred an infant to a chiropractor.
Ninety-two percent (n=171) reported being chiropractic patients with another 58% (n=124) presenting their child for chiropractic care. Over 90% indicated experiencing a positive experience as patients and with their child’s care. All of the respondents perceived chiropractic was safe for pregnant patients, while only 97% considered chiropractic safe for children. An overwhelming majority of the responders (98%) indicated that chiropractors work with birth professionals, while 92% indicated that they were knowledgeable about the role of chiropractic in prenatal care. Lastly, 75% indicated interest in learning more about chiropractic, with 86% wanting more evidence-based practice chiropractic. From the 809 articles reviewed, 18 articles met the full inclusion criteria and proceeded to data extraction. Identified adverse events include local pain or soreness, swelling, mild fevers, and skin rashes.
Thus far, the majority of adverse events reported have been mild with few moderate or serious adverse events occurring in pediatric patients.
Total weight and body composition changes in response to weight reduction diets of varied protein content in midlife women. Age-related changes in body composition for women include loss of lean mass and gains in total weight, fat mass and central fat deposition. There is growing evidence that diets with low-to-moderate carbohydrate and fat content and increased levels of high-quality protein are effective for weight loss.
Greater subjective satiety is reported by subjects following test meals containing whey protein compared to other protein sources. The beneficial effects of whey protein on satiety, thermogenesis, and lean body mass protection suggest that whey may be a preferred protein source for weight loss treatment. The specific aims of this study are to assess weight loss in subjects receiving energy-reduced dietary regimens and to evaluate parameters of weight and body mass change between the 3 treatment groups.
Study Design: We are conducting a randomized, controlled pilot feeding study to evaluate the effect of different dietary protein sources on weight loss.
Endpoint measures include body weight and body composition data obtained at baseline and at 8 weeks for dietary treatment.
The HP diet and the WP diet produced greater total fat loss and less total lean tissue loss than the CD.
Conclusions: Preliminary data shows that across treatment groups, the high-protein diets conserved lean tissue and promoted reduction of fat tissue. Trials investigating TCM must be conducted with increased methodological rigor to be of value in evaluations.
The single included study suggesting that acupuncture may be safe and efficacious in CFS is limited in applicability by the use of sham acupuncture as the control.
Integration and interface between naturopaths and conventional rural care: empirical findings from a grass-roots research project. The worsening epidemic of DM in the United States, along with the increasing prevalence of obesity, insulin resistance, and IGT, render the identification of promising interventions for these states a matter of some urgency. Jon Adams, University of Queensland, School of Population Health ,University of Qld, Herston, Queensland, 4006, Australia.
While lifestyle interventions based on dietary pattern and physical activity can delay or prevent the onset of diabetes and reduce cardiovascular risk, adherence at the population level is severely limiting. Pharmacotherapy offers promise for diabetes prevention, but with associated high costs, unacceptability to many patients, and potential toxicity. In this context, the potential role of chromium (Cr), an insulin cofactor, in IGT is of great interest. Proposed, therefore, is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial conducted at the Yale Prevention Research Center to investigate the effects of daily Cr for 6 months at 2 dose levels on serum measures of glucose tolerance and on endothelial function in adults with IGT, IFG, and IR.
The study is powered to detect a clinically meaningful effect of Cr supplementation at either dose on glucose control, and to compare the two doses for equivalence. The study will investigate effects of Cr on both measures of glucose tolerance (glucose, insulin, OGTT) and brachial artery endothelial function, thus combining serum measures with a physiologic test of Cr effects on the vasculature. The proposed study will generate much needed data regarding the efficacy of Cr in those at risk for type 2 diabetes and offers the promise of guiding practice, as well as directing future study. By contributing to knowledge related to potential diabetes prevention strategies, this study addresses one of the more pressing public health issues in the United States today. Risk to human subjects in this study is a minor increment over minimal due to the administration of nitroglycerin as a control in BARS testing.
Secondary outcomes: (4) It will show improved well-being, as measured by elevated melatonin and DHEA. Unlike many relaxation therapies, energy healing requires no participation by the patient, a feature that makes it particularly attractive in the hospital setting, where patients are often anxious, depressed, in pain, or sedated.
Despite the increasing use of energy healing, few studies have looked at its benefits and even fewer at its underlying mechanisms of action.
In this pilot study, we examined the effects of an energy healing modality known as Reiki on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, both of which participate in the stress response and stress-induced pain and disease progression. Subjects rested for 10 min before baseline heart rate and blood pressure were measured and blood was drawn to determine cortisol, ACTH, and DHEA levels, using commercial immunoassay kits. Subjects then received a 30- to 45-min Reiki or Pretend Reiki session followed immediately by post-session heart rate and blood pressure measurements and at 2h by blood draws. When asked whether they thought they were in the Reiki or Pretend Reiki group, about 70% of the participants reported that they believed that they had received a true Reiki session. This suggests that the beneficial effects of Reiki on physiology, as compared to the Pretend Reiki, cannot be explained solely by the placebo effect. Effect of mind-body medicine skills on elements of emotional intelligence in medical students. Yet studies have reported that traits such as altruism and empathy tend to decline throughout medical school training.
In an effort to foster medical student self-awareness and mindfulness, which may improve their EI, Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUSOM) offers an experiential course to undergraduate medical students in mind-body medicine skills.
The purpose is to expose students to a variety of mind-body approaches including meditation, imagery, as well as group sharing and listening generously for self-awareness and reflection.
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the Mind Body Medicine Skills (MBS) course on perceived stress, mindfulness, and elements of EI including intrapersonal capacities (attention to feelings, mood repair, clarity of feelings) and interpersonal capacities (perspective-taking, empathetic concern, and personal distress in response to distress in others).
The intervention group (n=30) was comprised of first year medical students who self-selected to participate in this elective. The control group (n=36) included students from the first year class who completed the surveys but did not take the MBS course. Four questionnaires were completed at the start and end of the spring semester by all study participants: the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and a survey of EI developed by Stratton et al (2005) comprised of the Trait Meta-Mood Scale and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index. ANCOVA was used to compare the MBS and the control groups at the end of the semester, controlling for beginning scores. Patient perspectives of integrative and primary care management of back and neck paina€”qualitative findings from a randomized clinical trial. These conditions are additionally some of the most common reasons why patients use complementary therapies, often without dialogue with conventional care providers. The focus groups were conducted separately for those in the integrative vs the conventional treatment groups. The interview data were transcribed ad verbatim and analyzed utilizing inductive content analysis technique. Eliane Angst, UCLA Center for Excellence in Pancreatic Diseases, 675 Charles E Young Drive South, Los Angeles, CA 90095. A significant reduction in cell numbers was seen with quercetin concentrations of ~30 AµM and a maximum effect at ~75 AµM.
In MIA PaCa-2 cells a ~65% reduction in cell number was seen with 75 AµM of quercetin after 48 hours. Starved BxPC-3 cells treated with 75 AµM quercetin showed a ~95% reduction in cell number after 48 hours. Conclusion: These results suggest that quercetin has a potent growth-inhibitory effect in pancreatic cancer cells in vitro.
Additional experiments to investigate the underlying mechanism of growth inhibition and animal studies are underway. Flovanoids may reveal to be potent anticancer drugs found in our daily food, leading to specific diet recommendations.
These can be taken together to qualify as an academic minor in many of the conventional MA or PhD programs, often forming the basis of a thesis or dissertation required for the terminal degree. In the fall of 2009, the university will launch a doctorate of nursing practice with a focus in integrative health and healing.

We address the multicultural perspective, comparing data collected in Canada and Europe to those in the United States. The reason for this is that results on the health-promoting effects of spirituality and religiosity cannot easily be transferred from the United States to countries with different cultural and religious backgrounds. Thus, one has to recognize different concepts of spirituality, different attitudes towards its utilization, and objections against the implementation of it in a particular medical system.
In Germany, 3 colleagues have founded the Transdisciplinary Working Group on Spirituality and Health, and in Canada the Canadian Research Network on Spirituality and Health has been active for a couple of years. Data and approaches from these different networks will be combined into this symposium.Dr BA?ssing is an associate professor at the University of Witten, Herdeckea€™s Faculty of Medicine, where he directs the research group Spirituality and Health. As with business startups that begin informally and successfully mature into larger enterprises, growth brings new organizational challenges, together with greater visibility and opportunity. The maturation of massage as a healthcare profession increases the need for a process to formalize the synthesis of massage therapy knowledge from clinical experience and research—to collect what we know and to make such baseline knowledge widely available to practitioners, consumers, and other healthcare stakeholders.
The present paper lays out the motivations and framework for creating massage therapy guidelines that are informed both by research and by clinical experience.
It also acts as a report to the massage therapy profession and to other stakeholders about the work of the Best Practices Committee of the Massage Therapy Foundation since 2006. And it has the additional goal of providing a healthcare literature basis for future academic discussions of massage. The discussion here is based on a definition from the Institute of Medicine and on research into the nature of expertise. Topics addressed include guideline creation, credentialing of complementary and alternative medicine practitioners, definition of competence, and the increasing role of technology (that is, informatics) in managing training and task-necessary competencies. The roles of transparency and a wide and open peer review are emphasized as essential to the usability and credibility of guidelines. Health Canada issues consumer advisories regarding the safety of marketed health products, yet the criteria for issuing advisories have not been evaluated for consistency or objectivity.
The Causality Algorithm used by Health Canada was used to rate degree of association between the adverse events (AEs) and the products. The Severity of Adverse Events Scale, developed by the National Cancer Institute, was used to determine the severity of the AEs. Most NHP AWRs were issued based on potential AEs from contamination and adulteration, whereas most of the AWRs for therapeutic drugs were issued due to actual AEs. Of the 6 NHP AWRs issued for actual AEs, 3 (50%) were unassessable for severity, whereas of the 28 AWRs issued for actual therapeutic drug AEs, 1 (3%) was unassessable for severity. The origin of reports for NHPs tended to be from foreign sources or Health Canada, whereas reports for therapeutic drugs were mostly issued by Health Canada in conjunction with drug manufacturers. The potential of a mistletoe (Viscum album L) extract to alleviate adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy: an in vitro study.
Stephan Baumgartner, University of Bern, Institute of Complementary Medicine KIKOM, Inselspital, Bern, BE, 3010, Switzerland.
We investigated the effect of a mistletoe extract on PBMC with and without concomitant treatment with cyclophosphamide and compared viability and replication of normal PBMC with that of a T-cell leukemia cell line. The results motivate further preclinical and clinical investigations of mistletoe extracts as an adjuvant medication in cancer therapy to alleviate side effects of conventional therapy. Stephan Baumgartner, Institute of Complementary Medicine KIKOM, University of Bern, Inselspital, Imhoof-Pavillon, Bern, BE, 3010, Switzerland. We investigated the potential of a commonly used plant pathogen–system, Arabidopsis thaliana infected with the virulent bacteria Pseudomonas syringae (pv tomato strain DC3000), regarding its response towards a homeopathic treatment. Compared to Bion (a common SAR inducer used as positive control), the magnitude of the treatment effect of Biplantol was about 50%. None of the other tested preparations yielded significant effects in the overall evaluation. The purpose of this study was to determine remedy effects on a common quantitative measure of complexity, the correlation dimension (D2), of human sleep electroencephalography (EEG).
High Hostile subjects increased complexity at C3 and Pz, but decreased complexity at O2 during stage 3 sleep on CC.
In the high Anxiety-Sensitive subjects, CC caused significant increases in complexity at Pz and O1 during stage 3 sleep and at C3, C4, and Pz during stage 4 sleep.
CC increased complexity significantly at Cz, C4, and O2 during REM sleep in only the high Anxiety-Sensitive subjects. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether or not the objective measure of polysomnographically-recorded all-night sleep recordings can distinguish verum homeopathic remedies from placebo in human subjects. NV produced more marked effects on increased shifts in sleep stages, with a growth in effects from night 22 to 23.
This study examined the effects of olfactory administration of a polycrest homeopathic remedy Sulphur on heart rate variability (HRV). The Sulphur was given at dilution factors used for preparing 6c, 12c, and 30c potencies (1 potency per session, with potency order randomized), but for each potency, the test solutions were succussed to different degrees (stirred without shaking, 10, 20, or 100 succussions). Homeopathic remedies increase spectral electroencephalographic power during sleep in healthy young adults.
The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of verum vs placebo homeopathic remedies on spectral qEEG measures of polysomnographically-recorded all-night sleep recordings. Evaluating a nonlinear dynamical model for human flourishing: Relationship of PANAS positive-to-negative-affect ratio and global health and well-being.
The purpose of the present study was to compare global physical health (GPH) and well-being ratings of young adults whose P:N mood ratios fell above vs below the Losada line. Despite higher (MCSD) scores in PF, a small sex and age difference between groups, ANCOVAs controlling for MCSD, sex, and age still showed statistical significance of the above PF vs PL group differences.
