The Motorola Atrix HD is the follow-up to last year's Atrix 4G and Atrix 2 smartphones for AT&T.
But the 2012 smartphone market is very different from 2011's, and the Atrix HD has some seriously stiff competition in AT&T's smartphone lineup with the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X. At first glance, the Motorola Atrix HD looks like it fell from the same tree that the Motorola Droid Razr and Droid Razr MAXX came from. The front of the phone features a new 4.5-inch HD ColorBoost TFT LCD display with 720 x 1280 pixels of resolution. There is a large black border that surrounds the screen, and it makes the Atrix HD feel like its a bit wider than it needs to be. Above the screen is a virtually hidden multi-color LED notification light next to a rather small earpiece. The back of the Atrix HD features a Kevlar fiber panel that provides strength and rigidity and just feels great in the hand. Overall, the Atrix HD offers a level of build and display quality that you don't normally see in Android devices at this price point.
In addition to the Laptop Dock thata€™s available for the Motorola ATRIX 4G, there is also an HD Multimedia Dock that converts any high-definition television set into some sort of mini desktop PC.
Yes they actually sell a Dock, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse and wireless media controller package for $190ish. I bought the lapdock and now I am thinking that I should have purchased the multimedia dock instead. I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that this nifty dock doesn't appear to lend itself to interface with my desktop computer's file system.
Granted, it's not much trouble to use the supplied USB data transfer cable by simply plugging it into the phone's micro-USB port and into the computer's USB port. The phone benefits on Motorola’s experience acquired with the design of the Motorola Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR Maxx.
This year, the Atrix gains a much improved display, a faster processor, and better build over the older phones.
The Atrix HD has most of the specs to match the top tier Android smartphones, but does it put them together well enough to be a real competitor? The design of the phone is very similar to Motorola's Verizon flagships, but the corners have been rounded a bit and the overall look of the Atrix HD is a bit softer than that of the DROID RAZRs.
This new display features an RGB stripe pixel layout and a pixel density of 330 PPI, besting the pixel density of almost all of the smartphones on the market today.
Viewing angles are excellent, and the ColorBoost screen is usable outdoors in direct sunlight, but it's not quite as good as Nokia's ClearBlack displays, which set the bar for outdoor visibility. There is a thicker bulge towards the top of the phone that houses the camera and external speaker, as well as provides room for the 3.5mm headphone jack, micro-USB port, and micro-HDMI port. The panel has a soft-touch finish with a faux carbon fiber weave, which is much better than the glossy plastics used on other smartphones. Ademas, incluye algunas caracteristicas del Motorola RAZR, como su parte trasera construida en kevlar, que le otorga una mayor proteccion y adherencia. It seems to allow you to have the same viewing options as the lapdock except you can also tape from your tv and work on the TV or other hd computer screens.
It would be so nice to be able to slip my Atrix into the dock and have its data drive mount to my PC's file system for transfer, editing and file management tasks. But it would have been so slick to just drop the phone into the dock and have it linked up for file management while it was charging. Both the industrial design and the internal software are heavily inspired by its two predecessors which were launched with Verizon a while back. While the Atrix HD does not have the huge 3200mAh battery of the Droid RAZR Maxx, it does have most of the software features that Motorola has developed internally, and that includes SmartActions which remains unchallenged at this point in time.

Fortunately, its $99 price tag makes it a great value, and it is one to be considered for those who don't want to shell out upwards of $200 on a new smartphone. Fortunately, Motorola's hallmark solid build quality is present and accounted for here, and the Atrix HD is certainly a well-built device.
The result of this is that images and text are very crisp, and it is all but impossible to see individual pixels with the naked eye. The border surrounding the screen on the Atrix is about twice as wide as that found on the Samsung, and it really feels like Motorola could have used a smaller border to increase one-handed usability while still keeping the 4.5-inch display. The only thing below the display is a silk-screened AT&T logo, as the Atrix HD does not have any capacitive or physical buttons on its front.
Motorola also notes that the Atrix HD sports a water-repellent nano-coating, so it can withstand the occasional splash from a liquid with no ill effects.
However, youa€™re going to want to place this one next to your high-definition television because it offers the same identical Motorola webtop experience that we see running with the Laptop Dock. I'm unsure why Motorola didn't incorporate this provision into this dock since sharing files between smartphones and computers is a popular thing to do these days. Now, the question is: where does the Atrix HD fit in an extremely competitive Android landscape? The seams are all very tight, and though the phone is primarily plastic, the plastics used feature a soft finish, as opposed to the very glossy finish that Samsung prefers for its smartphones.
The Atrix HD is sealed all around, so users will not be able to access or swap out the 1780mAh battery that is inside. In fact, the display of the ATRIX 4G turns into an on-screen trackpad that mimics the functions of whata€™s used with most laptops.
At 140g (4.9oz), the Atrix HD isn't the lightest phone on the market, and that certainly helps with its solid feel. This flap is really the only part of the Atrix HD that I didn't like, as it felt a bit weak. I browse the web several times a day to check on news sites, but rarely watch movies or play music. Luckily, if you prefer to navigate with something else aside from the on-screen trackpad on the handset, you can connect USB peripherals, like a USB mouse and keyboard, to the back of the HD Multimedia Dock. Essentially, it transforms the handset into a mini desktop PC, but ita€™s equally impressive because ita€™s all being powered by the smartphone. This usage pattern will affect battery life and the perception of what features are useful. And finally, you can also run the handseta€™s Entertainment Center experience which will quickly allow you to share multimedia content, such as photos and videos, directly on your television with its special interface. The Motorola ATRIX 4G mounted on its HD Multimedia DockNaturally, the beauty about the HD Multimedia Dock is its ability to take the experience outside of simply using the phone while youa€™re out and about.
Now you know where we’re coming from…Industrial designFrom a design standpoint, the Atrix HD is truly the fusion between the Motorola RAZR and the Motorola RAZR Maxx. You work throughout the day using your phone to write up emails, send files, take photos, and download a short video of some sort onto the handset.
The overall design inspiration obviously comes from race cars, especially the black line in the middle which is reminiscent of American classic muscle cars. Once you get home, you can basically slip it into the Dock and sit down using a mouse and keyboard to take your productivity to a whole new level. And while youa€™re at it, you can be browsing the web, while listening to music from Pandora thata€™s being played on your phone. In the back, you will find the same scratch-resistant carbon treatment that previous Motorola smartphones featured. The more productive you want to be, and the more likely this element may get in the way.Users have the choice between the Motorola Keyboard or Swype. Although called Motorola Keyboard, it looks very much like a stock Android keyboard and any differences would be non-obvious. It’s very powerful because your finger doesn’t leave the surface of the screen, making the whole motion much more accurate than “tapping” on the screen. The typography makes emails very readable, and it is possible to perform actions on multiple items at once.

Deferring the email download *may* save some battery life, but it is also a major annoyance in my opinion. I get a lot of emails, so this is a big deal for me, and I feel like I can actually get some work done in an efficient way with this.On a daily basis, the most important features are the search and background download. In the back, the Atrix HD has a powerful speaker that should be plenty loud, even in a mildly noisy environment such as an office. The good thing about MHL is that it also charges the phone while connecting to a TV…Imaging (Good)Motorola has improved the camera capabilities by quite a bit.
In low-light, the photos can be a bit noisy (like with the iPhone 4S), but they look great for web uploads and social network updates. The Motorola Atrix HD also has a tendency to crank-up the contrast. This photo was shot late in the evening, and it was fairly dark alreadyThe video recording has most of the same properties.
I’ve tried shooting a 720p movie outdoors, and again, for web usage this will work very well. In conclusion, I would say that while Motorola has made indisputable progress in terms of photography, the Atrix HD still faces very tough -and superior- competition from the best Android handsets out there. This means that unless you do something very specific (like “gaming” or “downloads”), those phones should provide a similar overall performance. As you can see, the Motorola Atrix HD scores pretty close to other phones equipped with a similar Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip which has very fast floating point performance.
In this test, the quad-core chip would tend to do better because Antutu has been written in a way that is friendly to more general (non floating-point) operations.Nenamark 2 is a test aimed at measuring the graphics processor performance. It is handy, but keep in mind that the latest games use much more complex techniques that are not represented in this test. In this test, Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered phones take the lead and grab the three top spots. Performance jump of 100% have been witnessed after software updates, so keep in mind that this may not be a great CPU test.
It also uses a single-core, so it won’t be able to differentiate much between single and multi-core architectures. Most of the perceived web performance is felt during the load time and rendering time, both of which often have nothing to do with JavaScript performance. As you can see, the Motorola Atrix HD benefits from the latest improvements to the JavaScript engine, and easily gets the highest score. What they don’t show for example is the user experience is smooth and responsive (responsiveness is not always solved with brute-force processor power). In the end, what good is raw performance if you can’t perceive it?Perceptibly, the Atrix HD does well and it is comparable to other high-end phones in its category. This is also the battery depletion that we expect to see when the phone is sitting in your pocket all day. With WiFi, the battery life should be better, and we’re still running the test at the moment. Now, you need to know that Motorola has built-in smart actions, a system that allows users to easily program many types of automatic behaviors and some of them are really handy for saving power. For example, you can pre-program the phone to turn off all the radios you go to bed, this is for sure a huge battery saver. And because it can wake up 30mn before you do, by the time you have the phone in hand, every email and updates will have been synchronized. If you are an business user, you may want to take a closer look at what Motorola has done to help IT departments integrate its phones.
For the general public, the choice will be harder and things will often come down to the industrial design, or whichever financial incentives AT&T may be offering.
SmartActions is my favorite one, as it is a feature that is genuinely useful and which may help you save battery life. The MotoCast software can also be very handy if you need to access files on your home computer while on the go.I hope that this review was helpful, and if there is something that I did not cover, feel free to drop a comment below.
