This is the first in a series of articles exploring the unique needs of people of faiths vacationing at Walt Disney World. It is a given for most people that you don’t give up your faith, practices, and traditions just because you go on vacation. For this article, I will cover the options available for Jewish guests who wish to keep kosher on vacation. While a majority of the foods at Walt Disney World are not certified kosher, there are options for those who want to keep kosher during their vacation. When it comes to counter-service meals, not all places on property have kosher offerings, however there is at least one counter-service location in each theme park that offers kosher food.
For Disney resort hotels, availability and variety of kosher meals at quick-service restaurants can be inconsistent, so it is important to check upon arrival to see what options are currently available, or call 407-WDW-DINE in advance for the most up-to-date information. After I selected my meal, my food specialist rung up the order and told me it would take about four minutes for the meal to be ready. For snacks, the best bet to ensure that an item is kosher is to purchase pre-packaged snacks and read the label to look for a symbol of kosher status. And in case you are curious, Mickey Premium Bars, Dole Whip, and popcorn at Walt Disney World are all reported to be kosher, but as always, check before you purchase to make sure that it meets your personal specifications.
If you are staying in a DVC property, you can always take the option of dining in your room, especially for a meal like breakfast, although you may want to bring your own disposable tableware and cooking utensils. In addition, Walt Disney World allows its guests to bring food into the parks—everything from snacks to full meals.
If you prefer to order your groceries from a kosher-only store, Central Florida Kosher is an online kosher grocery store serving the Orlando metro area. Kosher Gourmet Restaurant at 7508 Universal Boulevard, Orlando, offers both daily menus (Sunday through Thursday) and a Shabbat menu for pick-up on Friday. Lower East Side Restaurant 2.0, 8548 Palm Parkway, Orlando, is located a few minutes from Downtown Disney. Kosher Grill, located at 5615 International Drive, Orlando, also provides a diverse assortment of foods, and provides delivery to Disney hotels for a $35 fee. In addition to these locations, many other restaurants in the Orlando area say that they are kosher, however it is always a good idea to ask to see their kosher certificate before you dine. Restaurants like The Lower East Side provide greater variety in kosher dining than you can find at Walt Disney World itself. In reality, while it is possible to eat exclusively at Disney and stay kosher for a trip, unless you have an incredibly short vacation, you likely will want to explore other dining options for greater variety. Stay tuned for additional articles about religious needs at Walt Disney World, and if you have a specific religion or religious need you want covered, please leave a comment below.
During Pesach, many table service Walt Disney World Resort restaurants allow you to order kosher Passover entrees such as brisket, honey-glazed chicken breast, baked fillet of salmon with a matzah farfel side dish, 8-inch cheese pizza made with egg whites and a potato starch shell, and chicken strips with potato croquets. As always, the best bet is to make sure you call at least 48 hours in advance to see what Disney can do for you. If you are exploring the unique needs of faiths, then you might also want to mention worship locations. All dining plans, discounts, and dress code that apply for dinner will apply for Waterfront Brunch. Black Friday is fast approaching, so for this installment of Best Week Ever I took another trip to Disney Springs in order to check out Twenty Eight & Main, the newest spot inside the Marketplace Co-Op to spend a mortgage payment.
As I reported in October, the new I-4 exit ramp to Disney Springs makes entering the Orange parking garage pure bliss.
Last week at Disney World for the first time in a long while we saw six out of seven days with crowd levels within one or below what the Disney World Crowd Calendar predicted. Last week only three Universal Crowd Calendar predictions missed by more than one index level and its only big miss was an overestimate on Tuesday. Last week Disneyland wait times started one level higher than expected on Sunday then descended each day until Thursday when they begin to spike heading into the weekend. See videos of Straight Outta Food Truck and 3 other new Universal Studios Florida street shows. Between the end of Halloween Horror Nights 25, and the recent permanent closures of Disaster and Twister, Universal Orlando has said farewell to a long list of attractions in the past few weeks. Anyone who has been Walt Disney World has the instantly recognizable photographs of their family in front of Cinderella Castle or Spaceship Earth or the Sorcerer’s Hat (at least until last year). Wait times are up at Disneyland and there are plenty of reasons to believe that the crowdedness will continue through the rest of 2015. Taking this into account as well as the increase in wait times we have seen in fall 2015, today we are pushing updates to the Disneyland Crowd Calendar between now and the end of 2015. As always, the crowd calendar is subject to change and we expect that further updates to the calendar may be required for dates in 2016 once we see how wait times play out during the rest of 2015. Changes to the variables that measure the available capacity to process guests at a particular park. We have expanded the variables that measure capacity in one park to account for changes at other parks.

On day two, we finally got smart and starting pulling out the pages of characters at the park we were visiting and putting them in a Ziplock bag.
Hey that’s the EXACT same Alice we met, and I recognized Tinkerbell from an earlier post, too.
We had the Disney Storybook Collection (I think there’s a bedtime and regular book) that we bought ahead of time for $20. I’ve heard great things about those storybooks – we just had too many books to make! And while, all joking aside, a trip to Walt Disney World isn’t a religious pilgrimage of any major world religion, Walt Disney World and the surrounding areas do provide resources for people of faith to honor their religious practices and keep their customs while on vacation. Most table-service restaurants can offer a kosher meal with a minimum of 48 hours advance notice.

This means that you will be waiting a little extra for your meal, especially if you are ordering more than one kosher meal. Once I mentioned that I was ordering a kosher meal, the cast member at the register had to call over a specialist with “the book”—a book with information about a wide variety of dietary issues, such as gluten sensitivity or food allergies. In addition, most counter service locations have a book that lists what items are kosher and what are not. For the Shabbat meal, orders must be placed by noon Thursday to allow the food to be prepared before Shabbat.
They offer a variety of dine-in meals, as well as take-out for Shabbat or boxed breakfasts or lunches, perfect to take into the theme parks. In addition, expect to pay more for kosher food, especially if you eat at an off-site restaurant. It has been my experience that Disney dining is incredibly receptive to guest needs, and will do everything that they are able to ensure a magical vacation.
I’m looking to do additional articles about other religious dietary requirements as well as houses of worship and holy day accommodations for different religions. Guests wishing to use the Disney Dining Plan will need to use two Dining Plan meal entitlements per person for the DDP and deluxe plans and one Dining Plan meal entitlement per person for Premium and Platinum plans. Epcot, formerly known as EPCOT Center, stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow and was intended to be a real, working community with an innovative design to serve as a model for future cities. Come along as see what you’re going to go broke on during your next Walt Disney World visit!
If you are used to spending an hour sitting at stoplights and circling surface lots each time you tried to park at the old Downtown Disney, the new traffic flow into the renamed complex is going to seem like nirvana. This matches the calendar’s long term success rate, a good sign for those of us following the unprecedented spike in wait times we have seen since Labor Day. The Disneyland Crowd Calendar matched that pattern but missed in magnitude on Monday, Thursday and Saturday while hitting the mark within one level three other days. But when one door closes, another opens — or in this case, four new Universal Studios Florida street shows have opened.
But Universal finally added them as official attractions on the most recent park maps, so we are bringing you a look at these entertainment additions with full videos of each new production. Here, you have the weathered, ancient walls of temple ruins, enhanced with various props. In subsequent visits, the bicycle pictured here had been moved to another location in the park. The effort the Imagineers put into theming even out-of-the-way corners creates photography opportunities far beyond the Nikon branded picture spots. Season of the Force comes to Disneyland on November 16 which will push wait times significantly higher at Star Tours and Space Mountain in the short term.
However, this version of the calendar does include some changes to how we predict wait times. This helps account for the extensive loss of attractions at Disney Hollywood Studios, for example.
In 2015 Mickey’s Halloween Parties and Christmas Parties are bunched together a little more closely than in years passed such that we see periods of three or four days with only one day of regular park hours in between. Like no other time period since we began tracking Disney World crowds in 2002, fall 2015 was different from the same period in years passed. To note a request for a kosher meal, and to verify a restaurant’s ability to provide kosher dining, call 407-WDW-DINE.
It is advisable to try not to hit a counter service restaurant at the peak of the lunch or dinner hour to avoid having a lengthy wait. She showed me the page in the book with the kosher meals and apologized in advance for the limited selection. Still, it is wonderful that the option is available to keep kosher and to be able to do so with only minor pre-planning required. For counter service restaurants, the menus are fairly static year-round, but you may have luck at sit-down restaurants. Soups include garden vegetable and matzah ball, and delicious desserts include chocolate layer cake, coconut macaroon and carrot cake. When Walt passed away, the vision for Epcot gradually turned into a park that celebrated both the future and the world. Perhaps the craziness is slowing down and wait times will return to normal ranges of what we have seen historically. None are worth making a special trip to the park for, and their combined attendance won’t approach the capacity of the major rides recently closed, but all four shows are worthy of 15 minutes out of your day if you are in the area when one begins.
No characters or crowds to be seen, just an exotic looking setting providing the background for a magical moment. Universal Studios in Hollywood was renowned for being a part of Universal’s actual working studio lot, able to give visitors a glimpse at films and television shows in production. In addition, Disneyland has added multiple parades and fireworks between November 21 and 28 which means they expect crowds to be significantly higher than usual. We have seen significant reductions in wait times at Magic Kingdom’s New Fantasyland attractions, for example. Including a short-term trend variable will help account for sudden changes like these in the future. After scouring Pinterest, I learned that there was no post, anywhere, that could really walk me through planning an entire trip to Disney.
Today, I’ll share some things we learned along the way, how to make the most of meeting characters and striking a balance between seeing attractions and high-fiving the characters.
If it isn’t 100% obvious by now, I spent a fair amount of time researching our trip to Disney, particularly the characters.
You can purchase autograph books at Disney, but be prepared to shell out some serious cash. You don’t have to write it down, but if your niece wants to see Anna and Elsa then make that a priority.
With the extreme Florida heat, some of those characters simply can’t stand in that weather for hours on end.

We worked hard to meet characters in twos, or more, like Woody and Jessie, Phineas and Ferb and Tigger and Pooh.
With the exception of one character (green army men), every meet and greet had a PhotoPass photographer taking pictures. Breakfasts take you away from hitting the rides before the lines get long and dinners are always the most expensive. My son has some food allergies and the chef came out, escorted me through the buffets and showed me what was safe and what to avoid. I suppose we thought it would be fun for them to each have their own – they share just about everything else in the house so this once we let them have their own. You may also want to verify the cancellation policy for kosher meals, which can be different from the standard cancellation policy. Also remember to bring a small pair of scissors with you, as the wrapping (which allows it to be heated in a standard microwave oven) can be difficult to remove.
Items available vary by restaurant, so your best bet is to go to guest services early to see what information they can provide for your visit about what is available. Before I left with my meal, she apologized for the “potato croquettes”, which she said tend to fall apart in the microwave and become more like mashed potatoes. Throughout the series, I shared our days at the parks, tips and tricks, taming the souvenir beast, money saving ideas, things we learned and photos we captured. We had a mix of boys and girls, bigs and littles and I wanted to make sure we hit the big rides and met some great characters along the way. We made our own using small three-ring notebooks, page protectors, these character printables from Etsy and Sharpie markers.
For those that purchased Memory Maker, once they scan your band all the photos appear in your account. At Akershus, they only took photos with Belle in a special photo area, the rest were up to guests to capture, tableside. Because guests have to cancel 24 hours in advance or incur a fee, you might just score big. And, after going to the parks and seeing them light up, I’m glad we did it the way we did.
If you are visiting a buffet and opt for the kosher meal, your meal will be pre-portioned and not all-you-can-eat.
The sealed meals do not provide flatware, so if you are not comfortable using the disposable forks, knives, and spoons provided, you will need to bring your own. For the third year in a row Jersey Week had a smaller impact on wait times that we normally see.
I found out what characters appeared at what parks (did you know Mulan is only in EPCOT and Pocahontas is only found at Animal Kingdom?) You do now!
Knowing the characters your kids love and then figuring out where they’ll be, and when, will certainly end up being a highlight of the day. When my oldest discovered I was making these, he begged me to make one that he and his brother could share, which I did. Like I mentioned on day one of the series, signing up for the Disney rewards credit card might pay for your meal. If she’s meeting Belle, you might consider either a) having her wear her dress or b) packing it so you can do a quick change in the bathroom. It also will be from a standard kosher menu around property, and not necessarily the type of food you will find at the restaurant itself. Basically think of getting a box of chicken nuggets from the freezer section of your grocery store and microwaving them.
Usually, the breaks last less than five minutes (and in many cases, less!) Hang tight, because those characters are coming back! They go through a pretty intensive boot camp to have the privilege of playing these iconic characters. We opted to wear fun shirts and change up our Minnie ears instead of wearing princess dresses. While the potato croquettes were certainly not what I would call croquettes, they were fairly tasty if you thought of them as seasoned mashed potatoes. Arrive before your reservation and then count on a short wait for seating and then about an hour for the meal. Extra magic hours do change every day (and they’re only available to those who stay on Disney property). Those scored some major thumbs up from every single one. Because we made our own books, they were pretty customizable, but they were also a pretty big book to lug around. I guess they could also do that from the Disney buttons, but the shirts were a hit that year. Are you looking to win tickets to Disney on Ice coming to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena October 4-7, 2012? Every single time we encountered a character, they made us feel like the most important guests in line. The markers, notebooks and page protectors you can pick up at any office supply store (or Amazon).
We also chose Tusker House in Animal Kingdom for our boys where they dined with Mickey, Goofy, Daisy and Donald.
My only beef is that they took up quite a bit of ink to print, but I was making a lot of books!
