It never ceases to amaze me just how MANY meal replacement shakes have cropped up in the last few months.
There are NINE flavors of Nutrition 53 Lean 1, ranging from your basic vanilla and chocolate all the way to some more exotic flavors like Chai, and even a Cookies and Cream. Strawberry Banana: This flavor is a little more complex than the vanilla, and not really in a good way.
Ok I know I spent a lot of time up there on the flavors, but let’s be real that’s an important element of any protein shake- especially a meal replacement shake. Another really important consideration with meal replacement shakes, and something that will apply to Nutrition 53 Lean1, is whether or not the formula is solid enough to support a skipped meal.
This shake takes it a step FURTHER in complexity and adds the whole ‘fat burning’ element on top of the meal replacement concept. Other things to NOT like about Nutrition 53 Lean 1 Protein shakes are that they have 5 grams of saturated fat. A final consideration is that you have to take two whole scoops to get your 20 grams of protein. I hate to be so harsh, but outside of the mildly pleasant vanilla flavor, I don’t care a whole lot for any other aspect of the Lean1 Fat Burning Meal Replacement. Hi, my name is Allie and this blog is my hobby :) I am passionate about being fit and active, so making a blog about my experience with different products that help me stay healthy made sense to me. Alrighty people time to talk about another meal replacement shake that has been on my radar for a long time now- and that is the Chike meal replacement shakes. I think aside from Gnarly Nutrition, Chike might have the worst name in the supplement industry right now. All flavors of Chike shake taste about the same in regard to their texture and sweetness even, but it’s the actual flavors themselves where they really start to deviate. While Chike does claim whey protein on it’s label, it also clearly includes soy protein, and the worst part is they don’t say, and you’ll NEVER know, what the breakdown between soy and whey really is. The other thing that really turns me off about the Chike formula is the source of the carbs, aka the source of the extra non-protein calories aka the only reason they are representing this as a ‘meal replacement’ product. When combined with L-theanine, the jittery effects usually experienced by caffeine are smoothed out. Nutrition 53 Lean 1 is one of those meal replacement shakes that just somehow managed to fly under my radar for so long- but I’m finally getting around to my review of this ‘fat burning meal replacement’. It’s not that shake that makes you throw your hat in the air, throw up your hands, and make a muted screaming noise because you want to scream but then catch yourself at the last second and make a sort of weird gurgling sound.

The two fruity flavors come one after the other, and are surrounded by a sort of muted, cream taste.
I mean really- if you’re going to make me skip a meal for a shake, that shake better be really, really tasty. I have my doubts whether it can really do that, but, I do understand that it’s a marketing game. I’m not a fat-o-phobe like some people- but I know 5 grams is a good amount for a single sitting.
I’ll be honest, I’m just not a fan of the way this protein looks from a packaging standpoint either. She has actually been a big Chike fan for a very long time and was actually the one who first convinced me to grab some of their stuff for a protein powder review. I found that the chocolate was the only one that really had me chomping at the bit to get more and more of it into my mouth. I find often times the products that start with your basic white bottle and black lid are failures.
I don’t know if this product can actually live up to that expectation, but it’s certainly worth trying to figure out if Nutrition 53 makes one of the better meal replacements on the market.
That’s actually how I identified N53 as a good candidate for a BPW (Best Pre Workout for Women) Protein Powder review. More stuff that isn’t great about N53 Shakes are that they have some amino acids listed in the ingredients section, which make it theoretically possible that there’s a little bit of good old fashioned amino spiking at play. From the best flavors, to the formulation quality, to the packaging- you are about to be a Chike wizard. I hesitated for so long because let’s face it, we never listen to our parents the first time. The vanilla was wicked artificial tasting, and then the berry and banana were both seriously lacking in how much real fruit flavors they were bringing to the table.
As you know from my other protein shake reviews, I tend to favor the ones that are actually just protein. But then also from cheap soy protein that is horrible for you, and then a slew of SUPER low quality carbohydrate from filler and nutritionally worthless ingredients like polydextrose, maltodextrin, and dextrose (sugar).
That was my thought process that drove me to write this N53 Lean1 Shake Review- and I think you’ll find that it’s very informative. There are some callouts along the bottom that are ok…and I suppose the color palette is fine. I describe them as the ‘Go Pro’ of the supplement industry because I feel like you need to own a snowboard and wear a Go-Pro at all times to consider buying Gnarly Nutrition. But after she called me and told me how proud she was of my one hundredth pre workout review yesterday, I said you know what, I think I’ll listen to my good ‘ol Mum for once. I think sometimes the plain proteins can be a little worse tasting than the meal replacements because they don’t have all these carbs to help them with sweetness and texture, but there are plenty that are able to walk the fine line between taste and solid formulation.

Throw in some artificial flavorings and coloring, and you basically have a shake that, aside from some whey protein, is probably not even worth drinking. I chose one super basic one (the vanilla of course), and then one that is a little more adventurous.
You MIGHT throw your hat up in a sort of half-hearted ‘oh yay’, but you won’t really get fired up. But when I grade these protein shakes from a packaging standpoint, I’m not looking here, and then there, and then being methodical and clinical in the approach. I think Gym Angel uses a white jar and black lid, and they do ok in terms of product quality. This vanilla flavor lacks the amount of authentic, ‘punchy’ vanilla that you get from a real premium protein.
The strawberry flavor follows up on the heels of the banana in a sort of chemically encore. It has decent texture, and the the finish is free of any weird aftertaste, but at the end of the day, this tastes average at best. But yeah- big thank you to, well, I guess I can’t say names without permission, but, you know who you are, and hopefully this review gives you the information you need.
Where the vanilla was at least a consistently average flavor from start to finish, the strawberry banana Lean1 starts really great, and then finished really poorly- similar to the Legion Whey+ that I reviewed the other day. Kind of like Perfect Fit Protein, which I’m starting to get so sick of seeing everywhere, by the way. I don’t think Chike is the best meal replacement shake on the market, but there like everything I review here on the site, I will point out the pros and the cons of Chike Meal Replacement Shakes. I wish I didn’t love Tone It Up as much as I do because they convince me that I need their protein! If that sounds good to you, let’s turn up the volumes on our eye hearing devices and jump right into this Chike review. I’ll talk about not just flavors and value- I’ll dig into the supplement facts, and even review the packaging for you! You guys know I think it’s a dumb name to start with, so the fact that it is pretty much the only graphic plastered onto the front panel rubs me the wrong way off the bat. The color palette is super boring, and really the whole layout is so jumbled around that I have a tough time getting valuable product information from it.
