What we needed to do for her was to build her career master plan with a mind map through brainstorming, idea organization and categorization. We decided to accomplish this using the most powerful tool I know, a method that I have often used with clients, students as well as in my own projects, that of mind mapping!
Mind maps help you think the way your brain was designed to think and organize and process information. If you have never used mind mapping, it is the single best way to visually and textually organize your ideas, projects, thoughts, and tasks in a way that gives you a structure and sensibly links related concepts.
You can apply mind maps to just about anything, from writing a book to creating a marketing plan to simplifying your bills. You can then go on to create second and third levels to your branches, as you build out each brand in more levels.
Reminder: Did you know we have a step-by-step course here to teach you everything you need for getting recognized, getting promoted and creating your dream career at your job? Whoever you may be, whatever field of work you may find yourself, and whatever your situation right now, you can have a career so long as you have desire for one. Sometimes, careers go through ups and downs, sometimes life demands that we set them aside to do other things, sometimes we forget that we even have career goals and dreams. Well, the number one purpose of my Career Master Plan mind map is to help you build your career master plan with a mind map. What you see in the image above are what I call the foundational pillars of your Career Master Plan. Current job or role: This is what you are doing right now, whether you are managing a large project, running your own business, or are in between jobs or staying at home taking care of loved ones. Top Strengths: A strength is a combination of your talents and skills, learn how to identify strengths here.
Execution Strategies: These are strategies that you implement to get you to your career goals and dreams.
Ideal Professional Self: This is a 25-word exercise where you describe your ideal professional self. And if you are ready to make things HAPPEN in your career, to get promoted, move up the ladder and stop spinning your wheels, well, first stop working so hard.
Hi Farnoosh; First, I have to admit that I had never heard about mind mapping until reading this excellent post about it. Hi Max, I have not ready any books on the topic but my little research shows that Tony Buzan is an industry expert for mind mapping.
Of course it is totally fine, use it however it can help you and I know you are resourceful and will find a way to make it work for you, Max.
I have your mind mapping site linked up to your name and hope you continue to add more on your page. I’ve never taken the time to do a mind map before even with the advice of one of my mentors. Anyway, thanks for being you and for posting some much-appreciated, practical advice to get my head on straight.
Visiting different links in your articles, I’ve listened to the podcast 28 about strengths. Dear Susan, welcome here, welcome and I hope to continue to help you in as many ways as possible. One tip to add to this already extensive already- like your resume and other job search docs, keep this mind map updated.
I’ve blogged about mind maps and job search before, but that was specific to resumes.
I have just started using Mindmap and after reading this blog I’ve started creating a mindmap for my career planning. Random word stimulation is a powerful brainstorming technique that can help you access your subconscious mind and the wealth of information it contains to generate original ideas. Regular practice causes the brain to expand its neural network to accommodate this free-form style of brainstorming, which strengthens connection to the subconscious mind and endows the practitioner with greatly enhanced creativity and critical thinking skills.
Ask a Question – It’s amazing how answers can present themselves with the help of some random stimulation – answers that come from the same mind that asked the question!
Randomness is critical so use whatever word you point to, write it down, and don’t let your eyes wander over the page. Repeat this procedure to select five or six random words from different pages in the dictionary. At this point you have reached the critical juncture that will determine your level of success in using the Random Word Stimulation brainstorming technique. Your objective is to brainstorm associations that connect the meaning of each random word to your subject in some way. Exposure to the stimulus of random words will immediately trigger associations to experiences buried in your subconscious mind. Contiguity: This law explains how associations work by the stimulation of contact or nearness. After a number of new associations have been generated, perhaps several dozen, you can begin to explore and discover ways to apply your associations to the matter at hand. Keep in mind that due to our education, and the many other influences in our world, most of us lean toward left-brained, logical thinking.
The brain can take a few days or more to restructure its neural network to accommodate this new type of thinking.

If you want your brainstorm sessions to be more like dancing than having everyone's feet nailed to the floor, click here. Having saved almost nothing from my speech writing gig and with absolutely no desire to write for yet another person with delusions of grandeur, I decided to go the artistic route and earn my living the honest way -- playing my clarinet in the subway. So I did what any, self-respecting, former English Lit major with a little known ability to recite Canterbury Tales in Middle English would do. And so, for the next 30 days, that's exactly what I did -- walked the streets of the Big Apple, doing my underground reporter best to befriend the people most of us think aren't really beggars at all but con artists trying to fool us for a living, bad actors impersonating beggars so they can buy cheap wine and avoid the rush hour commute.
Standing there before this man, tape recorder tucked under my right arm, I couldn't help but smile.
Thirty minutes passed, then Fred, with a pained look in his eye, looked at me and asked if I would "mind his dog" while he went looking for a hotel or restaurant to relieve himself.
For the past six months, Idea Champions has been delivering its Conducting Genius brainstorm facilitation training virtually as well as in person. First of all, a lot of things you'd assume would be lost in translation by going the virtual route did not turn out to be an issue for us. If you have a solid online platform and everyone can see and hear clearly, without video hiccups or audio delays, most of the concerns about clarity of communication become moot. And, there's really no problem with maintaining a high level of engagement and immediacy of experience IF you can keep tossing the proverbial ball back to participants in the form of questions, discussions, online polls, and practice sessions. Content is also not a problem, as any information you can deliver in person can be delivered virtually.
Our challenge, in teaching people, virtually, how to become better brainstorm facilitators is finding ways to replace the modeling we do when we teach onsite. Alert participants can pick up a lot of nuanced body language and facilitation cues simply by watching someone else facilitate a live brainstorm session. For example, one of our seven brainstorm ground rules, in a training, is "no side talk." In our live sessions, we promote a fairly strict adherence to the ground rules, but there are several non-verbal ways to remind rule breakers to stay focused -- subtle facilitation methods that become hard to communicate virtually.
Also, if people are having side conversations during a session, all you have to do, as facilitator, to stop this behavior, is walk closer to them physically. Other peripatetic facilitator moves that are hard to teach virtually are the spontaneous ones that emerge in a session -- the kind where the facilitator chooses to walk around the room, or stand in different places in the room, to give participants a different visual focus -- a move with the potential to literally change the "point of view" for everyone.

Of course, we can TELL our online participants about these subtle facilitation tactics, but it's much more effective, from the learning retention perspective, if they experience them physically and real-time. Our goal, as brainstorm facilitation teachers, is to create a virtual training experience that is virtually identical to our in-person training. Thanks to Val Vadeboncoeur, Idea Champions Director of Training, for sharing his insights and wisdom on this most important topic.
Recently, my company (Idea Champions) been getting a lot of requests for our brainstorm facilitation training and are in the process of putting together a simple website about this service.

And well, your brain is one amazing powerful intelligent system, so why not use it – even exploit it – to empower yourself with mind mapping? The one that I want to share with you today is a simplified version of what resulted from my client session, the foundation of a Career Master Plan (see image above). You have work that you want to do in this life, work that is meaningful to you and to those who benefit from it. It can remind you that you have a successful career in you and I want to get it out of your brain and into a mind map so you believe it too. These are the level 1 branches, and the basic exercise is to go through every single branch and come up with the answers that are true for you. This is a difficult one, because if you are in a role that is making you miserable, you don’t want to do it, and so write down why you are still doing it.
Write them down even if you are not observing them 100% right now, because it’s important to know them first before making changes to your work and career. I have a list of role models that changes and grows all the time and you know what, I admire certain people for certain things, so for instance, I look to one for speaking and another for writing. I did not want to overwhelm you with the additional branches in each of the levels, so the above definitions should get you started. The project lead was showing us how to lay out project tasks and I really liked the visual way we put everything out in a mind map. In my previous life, I was one and we used Mind Maps a lot to outline the details of the project. Great to hear you enjoy mind mapping too and very true – career mapping CAN be dull but mind mapping adds a fresh perspective, and nothing dull about being an entrepreneur.
Go ahead and use one and let me know what great things you discover with the power of mind mapping!
It may just be your cue to start on a brand new direction in your career, and I’m very glad that you are going to take the Career Master Plan seriously. I typically use this tool for project creation and development, but I guess my career is a project, too.
As you pointed out in the begining, I must have been at the point where I needed it and so it was there for me, so I took it.
I have a health focus + a career focus in my business, and I work with a lot of people who are either defining their careers, or moving up the ladder in the corporate world or getting out and building their dream business, so I am more than happy to be of help to you in either way.
I use mindmaps all the time for work, but it never occurred to me until now to take that one step further and use them in other areas of my life as well.
Give it a glance at least every 6 months to gauge progress and see if it still makes sense, perhaps you even have something new to tweak or add. The benefits of improving your thinking skills come from the practice of brainstorming new ideas about things that matter to you. Perhaps to create a new invention of some kind, improve an existing product or service, or simply to gain a deeper insight into any subject.
Of course it’s a good idea to read the definition so you understand the full meaning of the word. Each new association represents the seed of a new idea so the more associations you create, the better your chances of generating useful results. Thoughts that do not make sense trigger a deeply conditioned Left-Brain response of instantly discarding these thoughts as worthless fantasy. A cat could remind you of a tiger, a tent may provoke the association with a log cabin, the human eye is similar to a camera, a stair is similar to an escalator. A dwarf may trigger associations of a giant, day is a contrast to night, a sad face is a contrast to a happy face, black and white are contrasting colors, tall and short, new and old, fresh and stale. Be sure to write down everything that comes into your mind, no matter how silly or irrelevant they may seem at first.
You have just expanded your perceptions of your subject far beyond your normal patterns of thinking in ways you would not have otherwise considered. Applying random meaning to a subject suggests ways of looking at the subject in a different context from which the subject is normally viewed. It will help you to seek out new knowledge and sources of inspiration - so you can profit from the opportunities all around you. He is the publisher of The Mind Mapping Software Blog and has published several books on mind mapping, creativity and professional development. At 37, I was out of a job -- unemployed -- with an insanely exorbitant Upper West Side rent due in less than a month. Thirty days walking, talking, buying them lunch, and trying to discover the organizing principal around which my story would authentically take shape. We sat there, in silence, side by side, Pepe before us, as hundreds of people walked by, most casting glances, not coins. The transmission of tacit knowledge (the kind of knowledge that can only be communicated via apprenticeship or observation) tends to get lost in the virtual sauce.
Discussions: Most tutorials are followed by lively discussions in which participants explore ways they might apply the content of the tutorials to their own brainstorm facilitation challenges on the job. Brainstorm Technique Practice: Conducting Genius participants learn and practice 8 - 20 idea generation techniques. Experiential Challenges: Time allowing, we engage participants in hands-on action learning activities to challenge assumptions, spark new insights, and move them deeper into the learning mode. In-Training Brainstorm Practice Sessions: Participants get multiple opportunities to lead the group through ideation processes of their own choosing, applying newly learned skills and techniques to business-specific challenges. Intake Interview Greenhouses: In the advanced version of the training, participants take a deeper dive into the pre-brainstorm session prep process, practicing their client intake and needs assessment skills with real clients, real-time. Guest Group Brainstorming Sessions: In the advanced version of the training, participants lead real-time brainstorming sessions, on the third day, with pre-selected in-house teams. Review of Facilitator Guidebook: Since there is significantly more material included in the 140-page Facilitator Guidebook than can be covered in the training, we review the book at the end of the course, alerting participants to sections most relevant for them to study, on their own, post-training. Brilliant ideas go nowhere unless your people are aligned, collaborative, and team-oriented.

They’re also the first game development company that requested a logo, so we were excited to take on the challenge.
The purpose of this design was to make a friendly design that communicates gaming in some way – hence the console. The blue-and-white sphere to the left represents the creative flow that the company harnesses when brainstorming new game concepts.
Because they have several unrelated operations under the same company name, the goal here was to be ambiguous. It’s a nice emblem that can go on a uniform sleeve, or on toolbox stickers, attracting attention with its vivid colors. In the center, you have the root – the core concept, and then from that center, you branch out. If you are pursuing your real career goals and dreams, write down exactly why you want those precise goals and dreams for your career.
Examples of core values are integrity, collaboration, financial freedom, flexibility, and so on.
I just made a large investment in a private coach for myself and I know that not only will I reap the benefits but my clients will get a better coach for them in return.
For instance, you may start a business, a side-hustle, a website, a meet-up group, a speaking career. If you want to work with me privately to create your accurate Career Master Plan, I’d be honored to help you in a power coaching session.
Since this is a very visual exercise, I think the best thing to use next to your eyes is your memory, and I am sure your memory is sharp as a tac. That is how I decided I wanted to be an entrepreneur as well, and that is why I find happiness in my work efforts. Feel free to check the archives, sign up for the newsletter and thank you again for being here! Tony Buzan said something similar about how you can see what’s in your mind by putting it on a mind map and then you can open space to THINK better ?? Glad you enjoyed it, Shawn.
As in using mindmap template to create mind maps will decrease the time it takes to create it.

Using this simple technique, you can find new ways to solve personal or business problems, create new inventions, improve existing products and services, explore your own feelings and your relationships with others, and – in the larger sense – to discover new ways of thinking about absolutely anything that interests you. A clear perception of the problem is the first step toward discovering an optimal solution.
Many associations and the ideas they generate will not make sense in relation to your subject. Learning to recognize this conditioned response and bring it under managed control is essential. Exercising the brain through brainstorming results in increased mental strength and enhanced capabilities of thinking. If you feel inhibited in any way make an effort to be a little outrageous until you overcome your inhibitions.
Have faith in the fact that your subconscious mind brought these thoughts to light for a reason, even though the reason may not be readily apparent. Discovering new ways to look at your subject will start to generate new ideas automatically.
You will often drill many dry holes before you finally hit the gusher that brings the fortunes of success. Depending on your current brain state balance, you may find Random Word Stimulation awkward to use at first. Manes, the Borough President of Queens, committed suicide in his kitchen because he knew he was just about to get busted for stealing more than one million dollars from the City of New York in what is now affectionately known as the Parking Violations Bureau scandal. Each technique is applied to a specific "How can we?" or "How can I?" question participants will have identified, pre-training. The design team of Little Guy Logos has selected these logos based on aesthetics as well as personality. The bright colors communicate a youthfulness about the organization, that’s in line with their target clientele.
Your first level of branches are your key core branches, the thick ones that you first notice when you look at a tree. Clarity about the why behind doing the work helps ground you and validate the next steps you need to take. Example: You can put together a compelling keynote or negotiate brilliantly while building great relationships with your adversary. They can be people who are alive today or people whose stories have inspired you from decades or centuries past.
Describe them, their character, their common core values with you if any, their names even. Just nudge me for a consult, and tell me why this is important to you, and we’ll get to work. You can use them for your nutrition plans, for travel planning, for exercise routine, for zen habits, for reading list, for so much. The trick that I have learned is that writing dreams, goals, or thoughts in general by hand on a piece of paper is powerful. Be specific in your description, a vague description will usually yield equally vague results.
Be aware that new ideas often seem illogical, absurd, or completely irrelevant when they first come into your mind. Success depends entirely on your willingness to temporally suspend the urge to discard new ideas and allow yourself the freedom to explore them.
This is why it is highly recommend to limit your initial sessions to 10 to 15 minutes to avoid frustration.
Remember it’s the effort of trying that triggers the brain to adjust and it will adjust if you give it the time and patience it needs. Manes wanted to clean house in a "B" movie politically correct way to appease the irate public's need for reform. Are you finishing a master’s program or taking evening classes or enrolling in a workshop? If you dream of working with Google or Apple, then that’s your ideal client but you must know why. I really think mind mapping can help people with thinking more profoundly about pretty much anything. My publishers have it in several stores and I am just so curious and excited about The Healthy Juicer’s Bible. This technique works best when there is no obvious relationship between the word and your subject. It is not only therapeutic, but it makes the desire into your reality bringing you a big step closer to achieving that goal. She was turning over a new leaf and a whole bunch of other metaphors being supplied to her by a newly hired PR advisor. But a query letter to New York Magazine pitching an investigative journalism article on the beggars of Manhattan -- the real story, I declared, behind the people who panhandled for a living. Or more accurately, his sign for Pepe, his dog -- a portable cardboard sign painstakingly printed with a pen he found three weeks ago that let the world know he wasn't begging for himself, but for his faithful companion, a 10-year old mutt he found on the street and loved too much not to feed every day. I went online just because I was curious about you and then I stumbled across this road mapping article by you…another coincidence?
