Facebook Twitter Google+ LinkedInPhotography is one of the most interesting pastimes you can get into, but it’s also a very interesting profession. No matter the skill level, there are multiple ways in which you can make money from photography as a career, or for even a bit of extra income to compliment that of your main career.
This might sound like cheating, since the main skill is finding the objects at a low price and then selling them on at a profit.
Taking pictures of items and presenting them in a way that’s likely to make them sell is a real skill. Whether you are designing website aesthetics or a brochure for a company, much of this design needs high quality photographs. The prints can be unique and sold for a high price, or they can be several prints of the same photographs. If you keep up with the latest news, you can have a good idea what is topical and what will sell. It has been well known for years that certain media will pay for a photograph of certain events and celebrities, but increasingly blogs are starting to require their own unique photographs as they aim to be taken more seriously as a media form.
If you can take a topical photograph, or a picture of someone famous, you may be able to sell it to a blog. You may not think that this is strictly photography, but it takes a photographers eye to be able to do it well.
You will need to have a good knowledge of what makes a good photo, as well as being able to use software such as; Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. This is a good way to earn money, and it allows you to be a little more inventive than wedding photography will. As with wedding photogrphy, when setting up your website portfolio, you may need to take photographs for free until you are established. There are multiple opportunities to sell photographs in this way, due to the sheer amount of annual events that can be covered worldwide. You can really have fun with your photographs on T-shirts, they can be as serious or as funny as you like. I'm proud to say through my podcast and through this website we have impacted over 60 million lives in the last 4 and a half years.
I use both professional and amateur photographs on my blogs, most often though I use ones I have taken myself.
Sometimes I search for an image for my blogs when I don’t have one available amongst my own shots.
I have long been a passionate amateur photographer and I too have forked out large sums for decent lenses and equipment. I actually did a blog that touches upon the costs of running one, including purchase prices of professional photographs.
I spend money on travelling to exotic places to get shots of animals and plants all over the world.
My blogs have changed my life and the reality is I now regard both my blogs and photographs as a means of earning an income. I invest time, money, and my capacities as a creative artist, trained journalist and teacher of thirty years experience.
I understand your frustration and hope you do keep finding a highly paying market for your work, but I also empathise with many highly talented individulas out there for whom the internet medium is opening the potential for artistic freedom as well. If you have trained in and persued a career in photography, you should recognise that all photographers need to begin somewhere.
I don’t disagree that there are some truly crappy snap photos out there in the ether but so too are some real gems! I confess to sometimes loading up photos of my own I have not have had time to perfect, with the pressure of wanting to get something up on one of my blogs sooner, rather than later, but neither of my blogs are photography based ones.
I suspect others who intend to market some of their photos would be of similar mind to myself! We moved house in 1982 and saw several of our photographs in magazines but were never paid. You could also create a product that teaches people the basics of photography, so they know how to take awesome photographs, which in the future, if they wanted to, could sell or earn money from. I will have to say this is probably one of the most frustrating and disappointing articles I’ve read on A2S. AboutOur mission at Addicted2Success is to empower and inspire people by spreading knowledge of self development and life changing stories to the world. This guest post was written by Lee Torrens, a student of digital photography who is blogging about his adventures selling photos online at Microstock Diaries. I’m a subscriber to Digital Photography School and quite a few other resources which educate me about photography. We only earned $16 in our first month, but with persistence and lots of research we raised this to $270 in six months. Microstock is also a great way to educate yourself if you’re interested in learning about the commercial side of photography. If you do any research about microstock you will quickly find that it’s controversial. My blog is written for people selling photos in the microstock market, so I invite you to continue your research with me at Microstock Diaries. The thing I find annoying about shooting microstock shots is that I’m never quite sure what is the appropriate content. And this is a great starting point, thanks for the tips I wasn’t sure where to start but now I do! I am working on a long series of articles, intended to help those who want to get started in microstock.
I do apologize for plugging so obviously (something I am not in the habit of doing normally). Leslie: “Do any of the sites limit your ability to sell the same photos on other sites? I had a lot of time between tasks while at work today so I read through the author’s blog. Another thing to watch out for are all the stories and hype surrounding the top income earners.
After spending a lot of time with Shutterstock, I wrote an introductory review of their service. Last year I started a multi-part series on my experience selling micro-stock photography over the last 5+ years. If you sign up after clicking those links, then when you sell your photos, the author of the article makes money of you!!!!!! If the former, it would have been good to disclose but is really no different from the book reviews here. This is aexcellent information for a people like me that love photography stuff and want to explore about sell their photos. Dreamstime, Crestock, 123 Royalty Free: referral program includes 10% credit for referred photo sellers for six months. Fotolia: a long complicated document explaining their scheme, which does include a fraction of sales.
If I’m going to sign up with a company as a buyer or seller, then I might as well make someone else a few cents by doing so. Jozef Nagy: there is an inherent difference between a system which gives a referral fee for a click-through which leads to a sale, and a scheme which pays a fraction of future sales made by the referred users.
At the very least, it’s disingenuous for the article above to not mention that this little industry segment seems to entirely revolve around the refer-sellers-for-cash model.
You’ll also notice that the referral links at the bottom of the article are not mine. My reviews are often quite negative, and I’ve written a few posts that are harsh criticisms of the agencies I promote. The article was definately interesting and something I have been wanting to learn more about. Many of our readers actually like us to use these links as a way of thanking us for providing them with daily photography tips.
Referral plans of all kinds are great for the microstock sites, because they increase the size of their offerings.

But ultimately it reduces the potential sales value of YOUR porfolio as a individual contributor, due to ever-increasing competition. So individual contributors ultimately have to become referrers or they face decreased earnings. With the web driving microstock, will the pool of easily-accessible photos eventually out-grow demand? As to the referral model, it works to the benefit of the microstock websites because it increases their inventory. This is one of the toughest questions to answer for someone who is first considering a career in professional photography. One of the best ways to learn to accept and take advantage of criticism is to join a local camera club. Volunteering your photography to nonprofits or even offering some free photos for a friend who runs a business is a great way to test the waters, and will also provide the opportunity to get honest feedback. Honestly most folks enter the arena of professional photography with the misconception that they will be shooting photos more than anything else.
Photoshop and Lightroom (and other photo related software) are very powerful tools for photographers today. Wedding Photography – This type of photography requires a very creative person who can adjust to problems “on the fly”.
Portrait Photography – This realm of photographer also requires a highly creative person that can adjust to situations quickly. Virtual Tour Photography – Taking photos of homes for sale, or businesses to be featured on line is a great avenue to make money in photography. As well as learning how to take good close-up photos from appealing angles, you will also learn the use of different equipment (lighting tents, lights etc.) and how to edit photographs on computer software to make them look their very best. You will also have to be competent in photo editing software as well as being able to use photographed images in conjunction with vector graphics software.
It may be that you are better at photography than you might think, and many people would love to have your pictures hanging on their wall.
Your subject matter is entirely up to you, and you can really let your imagination run wild.
Some of this is down to being in the right place at the right time, but often these websites use generic images that match the subject matter at hand. In the past, these blogs often used images they found on search engines, which may have caused rights infringement; by offering them a unique photo you may be saving them a headache. There are many freelance websites where this skill is increasingly sought after, and it can pay very well. If you are taking photographs of a sports star or another kind of celebrity, be careful that you do not infringe image rights. You can also use graphics design along with the photographs to create something really unique, and sell something which will consistently make money online.
I love connecting with people who have a passion for Entrepreneurship, Self Development & Achieving Success.
The quality varies amongst my own works and what I wish to visually enhance with illustrations on my blogs. I pay money for these very often and hope that money makes it to the photographer responsible for creating a shot I view as one that will enhance my information or viewpoint! It gives me both a voice, audience and exibition space I could not even have imagined five years ago. Some of my income comes through my old job, but, increasingly, I am relishing my other “real job” as a professional blogger and photograper! If I am to sell any of my shots, they are the ones that I would hold my head up high with, alongside professional photographs. There is a lot of people who make money from weddings and such by just shooting in auto mode, scarey. The superficial advice here won’t begin to cover expenses in the vastly overcrowded areas of photography filled with amateurs clueless about business matters. I consider myself a very hardworking person, holding a regular 40 week, plus a photography + design business on the side which I have put blood, sweat and tears into for over 10 years. With new motivational videos, interviews, audio and more with your favourite entrepreneurs, life coaches, celebrities and inspirational people from all over the world. For one it can give great satisfaction to be creative, and express yourself through pictures, much like artists do with their paintings.
They have problems with keeping up with everything, and will gladly pay anyone handsomely for doing a good photo job for them. You can sell your photos from your trip abroad, but there are some things that you should focus on taking pictures of, if you are planning on doing this.
Firstly it hopefully gives you great satisfaction to be creative, and express yourself through pictures, much like artists do with their paintings. The Novelty item idea – Basically you could offer a service to take pictures of people who want pictures of themselves, or of loved ones on novelty items like; key chains, tee-shirts, coffee mugs, mouse pads, cd`s, or anything you can think of really.
Offer a Newborn photo service – A thing to remember here is that parents of newborns, are clearly some very busy people. The Graduation tip – Either if it’s preschool, high school, or college graduations, there are plenty of photography related opportunities right here. You've read and agree to the Global Shipping Programme terms and conditions - opens in a new window or tab. Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase your maximum bid amount. I need to do this because I’m still a hobbyist photographer despite earning hundreds of dollars every month selling my photos. We started selling photos online over two years ago as a way to earn a little extra money out of something we enjoyed. As it was a part time hobby we didn’t expect it to earn so much so quickly, but this early success convinced us of the potential and we quickly invested in a digital SLR.
There is an amazing variety of people contributing to this market and with a similarly impressive variety of reasons. The concept only works with the Internet and high quality digital cameras, so it’s still relatively new.
They know that their photos compete on quality and not price (microstock photos sell cheaper but in higher quantity) and their will always be buyers interested in the top level of the market, regardless of the price. This happens with any technological change as big as the Internet and digital photography and it’s understandable that those on the receiving end are not happy about it. Small businesses, charities and bloggers weren’t big buyers of stock photos when they cost $350 or more.
Full time microstock contributors with a portfolio of 7,000 high quality images earn over $20,000 per MONTH! Some agencies require a test submission which is more strict than their usual review process. Each is a simple shot taken with the intention of selling for stock, but with no more preparation that being in the the necessary place with my camera. Average per-photo earnings of top microstock contributors can be up to ten times what I earn, so you can imagine the difference in the quality and appeal of the photos they produce. If you plan to contribute lots of photos it makes sense to have an efficient workflow so you don’t waste time doing unnecessary repetitive tasks. If you’re an artist more than a commercial photographer you may want to seriously consider if you and microstock are a good match. If you have any other questions or would like more details, you’re also welcome to ask me questions directly via my Contact page. Does anyone know which services are the most relaible for payments, which generally pay the most, and which are the ones I should focus on submitting to first.
We all know there is a magic combination of simplicity and complexity, what is that combination? Microstock is perfect for students or hobbyists, who want to make a little extra on the side, but only very few actually go full time pro. In fact, if you follow the link to the author’s blog, he keeps stats of his portfolio across at least half a dozen sites. But if it’s the latter, I strongly suggest that this entire story be deleted and replaced with an apology.
If the person upgrades to a paying membership, I get a few dollars out of that as a one time commission. I not only agree with the author based on my own experience, but you’ll find the same points being made elsewhere.
It’s the same as tearing out the ads from the newspaper and gives you just as much benefit.
I’m consciously choosing to earn the respect of my readers rather than mindlessly promote their referral links even though it might earn me more money in the short term. As I mentioned in my earlier comment, the referral link at the bottom of the article are Darren’s. But that works against your earnings as an individual contributor (more competition, harder to get your own work seen).
If you remember the $1 per image per month average that I mentioned in the article, you can get a good idea of what you’re likely to earn.
The immediate feedback of modern digital cameras and availability of information online has shortened the learning curve immensely. As a professional photographer you must be able to take direction from clients (after all you are being paid to capture their vision), and also not take it personally when things do not turn out exactly as hoped. These folks are often very honest (in a constructive manner), and they will challenge you to photograph subjects which may not interest you. Keep in mind their critiques are a way to help you improve and should never be taken personally. What escapes most people who are considering a career in photography is that image management, and post processing will be a huge part of the workload. As with wedding photography it requires a strong ability to work closely with strong personality types.
Stock photography is providing photos to an agency on speculation that someone will need an image similar to what you are providing.

You will work closely with real estate agents and business owners to provide high quality images of properties that will be featured on websites and virtual tours. To gain a portfolio, you may need to either accompany an already established wedding photographer or offer to take photographs for free. I started this website with the intention of educating and inspiring likeminded people to always strive for success no matter what their circumstances. A good tip here would be to take pictures of the parents and the child together, and then you should take the photos right away after they get home, or even before they leave the hospital.
Firstly you would want to take lots of pictures of beaches, local people working, scenic wonders, historic places, tourist activities, unusual signs, to name a few. If you happen to know how you can get a good location, and have a good digital camera available, then you must be prepared to make some really good money off your photos. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable.
Import charges previously quoted are subject to change if you increase you maximum bid amount. We only had a little 4 megapixel point-n-shoot camera but my wife knew a little about editing photos from studying Design. Over two years later we’re now earning around $600 each month with a modest portfolio of around 700 photos listed with eight agencies. I know retired couples who just love to see their work published and I know people who earn tens of thousands of dollars each month.
Subsequently there are still many professional stock photographers with strong feelings about the impact microstock is having on the industry. Now that blog size images are $1 and print size images are $10, you can imagine how sales have increased. At the other end of the scale some contributors with only a handful of images earn just a few dollars. With this information you can easily compare your portfolio or photography skills to determine more or less how much you could expect to earn with your photos in the microstock market. Microstock agencies also review submissions based on what sells, which is images that are super sharp, noiseless and commercially appealing.
They also need to repeat this many times to create a portfolio large enough to raise their earnings above average. Do your research and refine your workflow so you can get a quality product into the market as efficiently as possible.
Artistic photos will sell in the microstock market, but not nearly as well as commercial photos. What I keep telling people I know who are decent hobby photographers is that this is a perfect way to earn passive income. Referral programs are normal throughout the Internet as a way to induce people to help sell your product.
His model is the same as mine: provide as much value as possible to readers and monetize the traffic with referral programs and advertising.
Just like on my blog, I put a lot of effort into writing it to ensure it created value for readers.
It’s not a pyramid scheme in the layered-sales-drones sense, but it still seems way too central to the business plan of many of these companies. One of the most common questions by enthusiastic hobbyists is “How do I make money with photography?”.
Taking great photos of subject matter you like, and being able to produce great images of a subject you aren’t really passionate about,  are two vastly different things.
Getting out with your camera as much as possible and getting honest feedback is the quickest way to improve and prepare yourself for a career in photography.
After image editing and business duties are done, most photographers are actually shooting around 25% or less of actual working time. The hope is that business owners or designers will purchase the rights to use your photographs for their websites, brochures and other media.
Virtual tour photographers have the luxury of less pressure than wedding photographers without the risk of photos not selling as may happen with stock photography.
We offer hands on training of the software, and with our ever expanding Rock Point Marketing program you will have access to training and marketing materials to teach you the ins and outs of becoming a successful real estate photographer.
If this wasn’t the case, every advert in a magazine would be a fuzzy shot taken on a cell phone. I personally believe if you are going to make money in photography you should spend your time taking pictures of things that pay you for this service, so sorry landscape photography as this puts you in the hobby category. This is an industry that is strong as all clothing companies need pictures for web and print, and the best part is they need pictures for every season, so it is year around. There’s also a variety of people in the middle for whom microstock is their job or who, like me, have microstock as part of their income. As a result a lot of established and highly skilled photographers experience early rejections and are quick to dismiss the microstock opportunity. If you plan on doing this as a side hobby in addition to all your other responsibilities, don’t expect to be earning the big figures you see plastered all over the internet. I have no problem with signing up via a referral link because it doesn’t change the terms under which I sign up. They may offer you partial feedback, or may hesitate to be completely honest for fear of discouraging you and hurting your feelings.
Separating your emotions and objectively looking at your work is critical to your future success. This means you will be in charge of scheduling, customer service, promoting, accounting and every other aspect of owning your own company.
While there are plenty of people looking for cheap wedding photographers, these situations tend to create a ton of headaches. There is some specialized equipment and software that is required but the total cost to start a virtual tour business is very reasonable.
You can also make money online by setting up a website offering to take pictures of other people’s items.
You can offer your costumers to have the photographs delivered in their mail for fast delivery of course. If you are just starting I would say take as many pictures as you can as you will never know which client will lead to more consistent work or refer you to more people. However, one of the biggest groups are photography students – both formal students with photography as their chosen career and hobbyists who study for fun.
By starting with the middle tier agencies that don’t require you to pass a test, you can quickly get an idea of what type of photos are accepted and which ones sell well.
Do your own research to figure out what sells, create those photos well, and be smart about how your contribute.
It’s a great model as you get to earn a living by giving people helpful information for free! If you are interested in wedding photography I would suggest finding a professional and establishing a relationship with them. It is important when trying to sell stock photography online that you keep up with fashion trends and cultural trends of what people are looking for. When I take pictures they are of people in different spots in their life, well they pay me to take the pictures then purchase pictures after as well.
Either way, it doesn’t change the financial arrangement between you and the sites when you sign up. A common misconception is that a photographer can take any photos they want upload them and they will sell. We will give you a little list here to follow, but there are probably thousands of more things you could do with your camera.
If for some odd reason they don’t want to purchase enlargements I was still paid for my time.
The days of hiring one photographer for everything is gone, today if a company was looking for a corporate photographer they would not bother talking to a landscape photographer, no matter how good their pictures are. While stock agencies may accept images of any subject, there are only so many sunset or nature images that will sell. If you like two different styles of photography I would make two different websites to appear like a specialist. Also, if you have access to people willing to be photographed, the most in demand items are photos involving people. Unfortunately paying for models is not cheap especially based on speculation the resulting image might make the photographer money. To make things more difficult that style of photography maybe the most saturated as anybody with a camera can sell these pictures.
But the reality is, you probably will spend $3k on half-decent equipment for only a few viable sessions. If you want to sell prints you are going to have charge more to cover your time, so I would recommend trying to have your images framed or printed on canvas to increase its value.
Costs associated with purchasing ever-depreciating equipment, quality lenses and lighting, renting studio space or equipment, purchasing editing software, props, web hosting and site development, and business collateral. One thing I would recommend is take pictures for companies like golf courses, resorts and spas as they spend lots of money on web and print advertising. Which is why many photographers make a ton of money blogging about how to be a photographer, and endorsing products throughout.
I have talked to a photographer a few years ago who only takes pictures of golf courses around the county. You paint a rosy picture, but the reality is, it’s not an industry to easily profit from.
