Mimicking is a perception of another’s behavior which automatically increases the probability of engaging in that behavior—imitating facial expressions, mannerisms, postures and behaviors of a social interaction partner, changing passively and unintentionally to match a current social environment. Artful synchrony is purposeful and effectual as another layer in the process of building rapport. I would just like to say a huge thank you to you, Vita, Robert, Meagan and all the girls on the retreat last week. Thankyou Beverley I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, Vita amazed me with her channelling, Megan the perfect hostess, the girls and Robert were great company, we laughed and shed a tear and I saw another side of Bali. 2)      Transformational Intent for Others – What is my intent in how I interact with others in this situation? As we ourselves maintain a “Transformational Intent” through the situation, something magical happens. As we practice setting a clear and conscious intent in every situation we face, over time we retrain our thought patterns.  Neuroscience research shows that our thought patterns literally create grooves in our brains that form habitual thinking. While muscle is metabolically active (each pound of muscle burns approximately 35 to 50 calories per day), stored fat is not, burning far fewer calories. What’s more, while aerobic activity burns fat during exercise, weight training utilizes fat hours after exercising, so your metabolism stays slightly elevated for a longer period of time following a strength-training session than following an aerobic workout.
This blog post is about “Your” unique strengths and natural gifts, but let me begin with a personal reflection to start us off. Until several years ago, I believed in the notion that if we fixed an ailment or weakness within us, we would become healthy and strong. We can all isolate areas of our lives, in the realm of abilities and skills (performance), that do not measure up to the so called ideal, but who’s to say what that ideal really is? As individuals, we have a tendency to value what society values and if we don’t have ‘it’, we feel we are not good enough or plainly, just not enough.
When I began my own journey of personal improvement and growth, I began to remember the ‘Guy’ who felt good about himself at different points in my life.
In my ‘world’ however, what I was naturally good at didn’t seem to be as valued as being able to bring definitive bottom line results through business and marketing oriented activities.
Then I discovered Positive Psychology and Coaching and I did a complete 180 turn – and my ‘world’ changed. Turns out that the more I focused on building on my unique strengths, the happier I was, the more confident I was, the easier life and work became, and the more positive things and feelings flowed into my life. Strengths can be character traits, virtues or unique abilities and gifts we came in to the world with. Seligman studied thousands of people and dozens of philosophies and religions to uncover universal traits & virtues not bound to only one particular culture or society.
Instead of listing all the strengths here and describing each one, I’ll just give you a summary of how these different strengths can be grouped.

When coaching clients, I always begin with a Discovery Session preceded by having the client fill out a Discovery Questionnaire and one or more assessments of their strengths (including the Signature Strengths assessment).
One of the questions in the discovery questionnaire asks you to describe a Peak Moment or Experience in your life by considering a time when you felt you were operating at your best and you felt good about it.
Chances are very high that in that peak moment you were using some of your unique strengths and gifts and didn’t even realize it. When we are caught in the routine of life, most of us aren’t using our strengths very often and we end up feeling unfulfilled and ungratified. Recognizing and developing our strengths contributes to a deeper feeling of self trust – a stronger belief in ourselves and that brings more confidence – a sense of being powerful. Knowing, owning and using our strengths can lead to a deeper sense of our purpose here in life and an answer to ‘why am I here?’  I believe that the world will be a better place when, as a society at large, we begin to value people’s uniqueness and their authentic expression of their unique strengths and gifts, rather than trying or struggling to achieve some cookie-cutter set of so-called ‘ideal’ skills and abilities. Imagine a place where you get to feel great – challenged – engaged – enthusiastic just by being your true self – all the while everyone else is doing and feeling the same things, just in other ways.

Read previous post:Change Your Beliefs, Change Your LifeBeneath every thought and every single thing we perceive and interpret lies a belief within us. In a 1999 study, Duke University Professor Tanya Chartrand and Yale University social psychologist John Bargh refer to non-conscious mimicry as the Chameleon Effect, “intentional goal directed activity… mimicry helps one learn vicariously from the experience of conspecifics or to ingratiate oneself to another person”.
For example, picture two people in conversation: One person nods his head to make a point, and the other nods seconds later. Her team selected thirty-seven students to describe and answer questions about a sports drink. Great sales people and successful con artists have practiced the art of mimicry successfully for years. When I got home, I was able to release the knot in my heart necklace chain easily, something I haven't been able to do for years and since then I don't feel that inner sadness any longer. If you have worked on your personal brand, remind yourself of your highest vision for yourself and your impact.  Stressed out and not exactly feeling like Mother Teresa? We usually just listen to the folks we agree with who are “on our side” and ignore the naysayers.
We typically want to see our specific agenda met, just like everyone else in the room who, by the way, may have an opposing agenda.  This impedes the best business outcomes.
The mirror neurons start working and we are able to elevate the dialogue through our own positive (and contagious) energy.
The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn throughout the day, whether you’re walking, vacuuming .
If you are not satisfied after your 30 days, you can have your money back, no questions asked.
That we should endeavor to isolate that which is ‘wrong’ or ‘weak’ within us and all will be right. It wasn’t till 4 or 5 years into my journey that I really got to know and appreciate who I really was at my core, what I was naturally good at and that doing more of what I was good at led to me feeling even better about myself.
I practically gave away for free that which I valued and enjoyed most, just so I could make the work I was doing, the results side of things, more enjoyable and gratifying.
When engaged in an activity or experience when we can use our signature strengths, we feel good – even if we are challenged. Coaching helps people discover, or rediscover, their best selves by tapping into their unique and natural strengths and coaching them towards mindfully choosing to use those strengths in their lives more often – sometimes by changing how they do something (their approach) and sometimes by changing the things they actually do (e.g.
Using our strengths, being engaged and in flow, contributes to a fuller and richer sense of well-being and happiness. In business, the artful synchrony of purposeful mimicry is a tool to increase affinity between interaction partners to deliver a favorable result. For business people who need to fit in or persuade a customer to buy a product or service, artful synchrony proves to be a powerful tool for delivering a favorable result. Interviewers used the same questions for the full sample, but the interviewer mimicked half the participants by mirroring posture and movement within a one to two second delay.

Subtle mimicry, exercised with skill, is perceived as flattery and comes across as a visceral dance of charm.
What if there was a tool that helped us not just survive the stress but actually transform these types of situations into productive dialogues?  Read on for coaching on how to do that. What we focus on shapes our expectations, what we move toward,   and what we experience. Second, quantum physics is teaching us that any object that is observed is changed by the very act of observation.
We can pause and ask ourselves, “What do I need right now to be the highest vision of myself?”  It may be a few deep breaths. Is this an opportunity to discover something unique about the strengths of each person in the room? I was valuing what I thought society wanted and worked hard to improve my perceived shortcomings, and though I became fairly good in my field, it always felt like more of a struggle than an exhilarating experience.
The work of positive psychology pioneer, Martin Seligman, will help shed some light on this.
He developed a list of 24 Signature Strengths that all people have to a certain degree but each person has a different rank or order to the strengths when assessed.
We can feel exhilarated, excited, passionate, gratified by the experience itself, not just the end result. Developing our unique strengths (instead of focusing on weaknesses or strengths that ‘society’ seems to value) is about developing our fullest potential. I believe that place is accessible to everyone now, if we just focused more on developing and using our unique strengths in our lives. A study by Nijmegen University psychologist Rick van Baaren found food servers who mimicked through repeating a customer’s order verbatim, earned almost 70% more in tips than those who did not.
The results showed the mimicked students were more likely to consume and agree to buy the drink. How can I genuinely engage with each person as if they were a friend, trusted colleague or favorite mentee?
I would welcome connecting with you if you would like to be coached on how to unleash the potential of this tool to transform yourself and your business. Her corporate clients include Coca Cola, UPS, Nestle, J&J, and others who know female leadership talent is good for business. With less muscle, our metabolism slows down and we gain fat—averaging about 15 pounds a decade.
We had spent more time in our studies focusing on what was wrong than focusing on what was already right and good within a person.
If you’re interested, consider reading one of his books “Authentic Happiness” to learn more.
Your top 5 strengths or traits are your unique strengths that if utilized more often, will bring many benefits to your life and to the lives of those around you. Time seems to slow down and we are what Mike Csikszentmihalyi, another pioneer in the field of Positive Psychology, calls ‘in FLOW’. In another study, Nicolas Gueguen from the University of Brittany found sales people who mimicked body movements, speech and expression sold more products and rated higher in customer service surveys than those who did not. It seemed as though all of Western Society had believed in this notion – the focus on illness and weakness was all consuming.
When people communicate at a subliminal level they demonstrate an affinity for each other and tend to become more empathetic. In layman terms it’s called empathy.  We all have mirror neurons in our brains, a fancy way of explaining why when one person yawns, the rest of us are triggered to yawn as well. When we set this type of intention we listen differently and access new information vs. listening from our filters.
