Most of us have experienced this internal dialogue at some point, but is there really any truth to it? 80% of the results you are going to achieve are determined by 20% of the lifestyle habits you develop. The video above is just one example of how quickly your food choices will cancel out the time you spend exercising.
Most people don’t burn 500 calories in a workout, therefore this equation will never pan out if food choices are ignored.
Rely on exercise to burn off those calories and you’re going to end up looking like this guy! When it comes to losing weight, you need to ensure that you are consuming less calories per day than you are using to function, exercise and carry out daily activities. A general figure is to eat 500 calories below your daily maintenance, though diets such as the VLCD (very low calorie diet) involve eating much less, in order to obtain much faster results. A very low calorie diet is essentially what the name suggests; a diet which is very low in calories. 800 calories is a very, very low amount to eat per day, and is why such drastic weight loss can be achieved on such a diet. Given that the average recommended daily intake for women is 2000, and for men it is 2500, a diet consisting of 800 calories or lower is very drastic and thus, is not for everyone. As previously stated, a VLCD is an extremely restricting and drastic diet, so shouldn’t be taken lightly. Essentially, according to the NHS, a VLCD should only be attempted by someone who is very overweight (obese). Moreover, it’s only recommended that people who have a BMI of over 30 should attempt this diet if they have tried to make healthy changes to their routine but have not seen any success. If you believe that you meet the criteria in order to follow a VLCD, the first thing you should do is consult with your GP. If your GP agrees that a VLCD may be the best approach for you, then they will likely help you to set up, or find a plan that is suited to you. There are some things you should keep in mind when you start a VLCD, and some tips to make it easier. The first is the fact that you may see some muscle loss, which itself could present some side effects.
Moreover,  VLCD can slow down your metabolism to the point where you may struggle to lose weight as your body goes into starvation mode and tries to hold on to the fat stores which it has. Some of the side effects which you may face when following a VLCD can include fatigue, nausea, diarrhoea, anaemia and gallstones, among others.
Overall, VLCDs are really a last resort for those who are seriously overweight and have failed to lose weight thus far whilst following more conservative diets.
If you do chose to try a VLCD, you should only do so with the consent of your GP, and ensure that the plan you are following is from a credible source. Good tips on achieving VLCD by aiming for high volume foods such as green vegetables, salads etc. On a very low calorie diet, consuming enough nutrients will be essential and difficult so while I might normally recommend whey protein isolate, in this case I would suggest BCAA and real food protein sources.

Summertime is fast approaching and now is a great time to start putting some extra focus on your arms. You’ve probably seen images of someone ordering a triple quarter pounder cheese burger, extra-large fries and a diet coke. The best thing for us to do is to ditch the diet drinks all together and reach for the healthier alternative…pure, refreshing water (maybe with a squeeze of lemon).
While we may be able to maintain our weight through regular exercise, if we want to lose weight, our caloric expenditure has to be greater than our caloric consumption until our goal weight is achieved. So why are we drinking diet sodas, eating low and no fat foods, “exercising” and still overweight? Enter your email address to subscribe to this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. Can we just go to the gym and “burn off” any garbage food that we might have eaten? In other words, a small number of important actions will lead to the most significant changes in your life and health.
Sure, some types of exercise are more effective than others, but for the most part I don’t really care what my clients choose for their regular physical activity. If you already go to the gym but are not seeing any changes on the scale then you would need to add an extra hour (or more) of exercise time each day just to burn that 1 pound of fat in a week! On those days you may end up eating 500 calories more than normal, which means you’d have to go back to the gym for a third workout in order to come out with your 500 calorie deficit for the day!
We all need calories to survive, and not eating enough calories can actually hinder your results.
You cannot find another type of food that offers such amazing nutritional value at such a low calorie count. The best way to do this is to exercise, to burn more calories, whilst eating a lower calorie diet.
Technically, in order to a diet to be classed as a VLCD, it should consist of no more than 800 calories per day. Given that 1lb of fat equates to 3500 calories, someone who has a TDEE (maintenance calories) of 2800 will be eating at a deficit of 2000 calories per day and subsequently a deficit of 14000 calories in a week, the equivalent of 4lbs of fat.
They are not recommended widely due to this reason, and shouldn’t even be considered by most people. They will advise you on the best steps to take, since a VLCD should only really be used as a last resort if the threats to your health of staying at your current weight are greater than those which may be present when following a VLCD. Though they improve the taste, they will add lots of calories for a very small amount of actual ‘food’.
The fibre will ensure that your bowel movements are healthy, since you may otherwise struggle to go to the toilet eating such a low number of calories.

Muscle requires a certain amount of calories to maintain, and eating such a low number means you will struggle to keep all the muscle which you have.
A way to overcome this is to have a diet break, or do reverse dieting for a week, or by giving yourself a reefed day (not a cheat day!) where you eat at maintenance.
If you encounter any side effects, you should again speak with your GP and if they persist, consider discontinuing the diet. Can I add that if this is something people are trying they should aim for nutrient density. Can I add that on a diet this low in calories that instead of a protein supplement such as whey protein isolate, real protein foods should be targeted. I think there are better starting points for beginners aiming to improve body composition, but this is certainly a method to implement for advanced eaters who have the basics in place and a healthy relationship with food already. Excessive consumption of diet sodas also place a significant toxic load on your liver and kidneys. In theory, you can drop 1lb of fat in a week simply by burning 500 calories each day beyond those calories you consume. You should first attempt a different diet plan which will be easier to follow, such as flexible dieting or intermittent fasting. Gram for gram they contain very few calories, meaning you can eat large quantities of them to fill you up and keep you satiated without spilling over on your calories. It’s likely that a small helping of dressing will contain more calories than the entire salad itself. Eating enough protein and supplementing with things like BCAAs will help to minimize this, though it is something to keep in mind when doing a VLCD. This is like pressing a reset button on your diet to allow you to carry on losing weight, think taking 1 step back and 2 steps forward. It’s also advised that you check in with your GP regularly whilst following a VLCD in order to check that your overall health is not affected. The reason I wanted to add this is because keeping calories low is a challenge, and by eating, say, beef fillet, for the equivalent 100 calories of whey protein isolate beef will also provide essential nutrients such as iron. Many diet drinks contain artificial sweeteners, the most common being aspartame. Not only is aspartame a neurotoxin, that can cause headaches and other neurological issues.
We spend 19 billion dollars on gym memberships including those of us who never actually go. Exercise is excellent for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. People who exercise regularly are less likely to develop cancer and diabetes and if paired with proper eating, can be an excellent tool for weight loss. They consume diet drinks, eat fat free foods and exercise, but can’t seem to drop the pounds.
When manufacturers produce non fat or low-fat foods, often times when they remove the fat, much of the flavor is also removed. In order to make the foods more palatal and tasty, they add increased amounts of sugars, salts, flavor enhancers, fillers, bulking agents and artificial flavorings. While exercising can burn a significant amount of calories, if you leave the gym and reward yourself with a doughnut, you’ve just negated all of your hard work. I’m an advocate for exercise, but there has to be a healthy balance with proper nutrition.
