Plantar warts are benign (noncancerous) growths that occur on the sole (plantar surface), heel, or ball of the foot. This patient is a twenty year old female who developed a Plantar wart on her heel, she ignored it and over the next 10 months or so it spread and eventually she developed a plantar wart on the other heel. She visited us and complained of pain walking, she had previously tried over the counter pastes on it with no change in her plantar wart, she also went to her General Practitioner and hade her plantar wart frozen with liquid nitrogen on two occasions again it made no difference to her plantar wart.
Plantar warts are caused by the HPV (Human Papaloma Virus) the skin is inoculated through minute breaks in the skin known as micro trauma this allows the virus in where it multiplies causing the plantar wart, over time the plantar wart grows in size and spreads. Plantar Warts immediately after treatment they initally will turn a slight yellowish color. Plantar warts, also known as verrucas, appear on the soles of the feet and are one of several soft tissue conditions that can be quite painful. Like any other infectious lesion, plantar warts are spread by touching, scratching, or even by contact with skin shed from another wart. It is important to note that warts can be very resistant to treatment and have a tendency to reoccur. Plantar Warts – Plantar warts are benign (noncancerous) growths that occur on the sole (plantar surface), heel, or ball of the foot – the wart is made up of a thick fibrous tissue forming a dense mass under the particular area of the foot. Due to the sensitive nature of the area anaesthetic is injected into the area which completely numbs the area so a quick and proper removal of the wart is accomplished.

We find treatments such as Liquid Nitrogen are very ineffective in the treatment of warts on the sole of the foot, acids and pastes also don’t work terribly well.
Unlike other foot warts, plantar warts tend to be hard and flat, with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries.
Over-the-counter foot wart treatments are usually ineffective because their use can inadvertently destroy surrounding healthy tissue. Pressure from standing and walking often causes them to grow into deep layers of the skin which pushes on the soft surrounding tissues of the foot causing considerable pain and discomfort.
Ultra Pulse CO2 laser is the most effective treatment as it removes both the head and the root of the plantar wart completely – never to grow again. The human papilloma virus  (HPV) causes several different types of warts, which are the most common type of skin infection. A wart, however, is caused by a viral infection which invades the skin through small or invisible cuts and abrasions.
Plantar warts that develop on the weight-bearing areas of the foot (the ball or heel of the foot) can cause a sharp, burning pain. Plantar warts are often contracted by walking barefoot on dirty surfaces or littered ground. Pain occurs when weight is brought to bear directly on the wart, although pressure on the side of a wart can create equally intense pain.

Podiatrists may recommend having plantar warts removed because they often are irritating and painful. Occasionally, warts can spontaneously disappear after a short time, and then, just as frequently, they recur in the same location. The virus that causes plantar warts thrives in warm, moist environments, making infection a common occurrence in public pools and locker rooms.
If left untreated, warts can grow to an inch or more in circumference and can spread into clusters of warts.
Normally, antibodies in the blood destroy HPV, but in some cases, it takes refuge in the skin and causes plantar warts.
In some cases, the podiatrist scrapes a sample of skin cells from the wart and sends the sample to a pathologist for microscopic evaluation.
