The skin is normally dry and may have a thick callus which appears as yellow or dark brown discolored area of skin, especially along the inside border of the heel. Symptoms: callus is an area of thick, hard skin, often yellowish in colour and usually caused by poorly-fitting shoes and excessive walking or running. Treatment: callus can easily be reduced in a treatment session by your Podiatrist using a sterilised scalpel blade.

The term hyperkeratosis denotes a condition in which case the skin becomes too thick and pressurised.
Cracked heels are commonly caused by dry skin (xerosis), and made more complicated if the skin around the rim of the heel is thick (callus).
For most people this is a nuisance and a cosmetic problem but when the fissures or cracks are deep, they are painful to stand on and the skin can bleed - in severe cases this can become infected. That term is correct, however what is a problem is that the term bruise is soft and doesn't convey the message that there is a problem. When there are dark patches within the hard skin it means that pressure has been so great that it has disrupted and broke the tissue underneath the callus.
Now if that has happened there could be an ulcer under that hard skin- because the pressure is still there building up and still hitting the tissues under the callus. Usually a biomechanical problem, but sometimes it is because there is something wrong with the other leg and this one is compensating for it.Again, maceration is not a good thing and this one is quite deep. A callas is a sort of a yellow or dark brown skin condition and this discoloration of the skin can be controlled quite aptly. The Callus Picture can make you understand that this is the thick and most hardened area of the body and if it is not taken care at the proper time it can lead to a genuine excruciating condition.

Your body is telling you that a problem exists and we need to figure out how to stop this from occurring because if there is no ulcer there now, there will be one in the future.
