Next thing you want to do is to determine how deep you want the housing to be, meaning how much of the shelf will sit into the cabinet or bookcase that you are making. The tangential plane is any plane that is parallel to the axis of the tree, but does NOT pass through the axis but rather is further out into the trunk and is tangential to an annual growth ring. HOWEVER, there are some portions of the tropics that have temperate climates, so you can't entirely rely on geography to tell you if a wood has grown in a temperate climate. It is determined by one of three major scaling rules: Scribner, Doyle, or International Rule. Knot that are believed to be tight may in fact prove NOT to be tight if they are not intergrown. In hardwoods, where the water carrying tubes are called vessels, the tracheids range from much more sparse to non-existent depending on the species. There's a general rule that it should be half or three quarters of the thickness of the shelf, however these are quite thin shelves in comparison to the side wall, so I'm going to go the full depth. Trees that grow in temperate climates have growth rings where as trees that grow in those tropical climates that have a wet growing season year-round tend to not have growth rings, but trees that grow in tropical zones that have at least a somewhat temperate climate do have growth rings, though likely somewhat weak ones. For example some people who develop a skin rash due to cocobolo dust become sensitized so that the next time they encounter cocobolo dust, the problem is worse. In softwoods, the diameter of the tracheids is the primary determinant for the texture of the wood, with redwood for example having very large tracheids and being coarse textured and Eastern redcedar having very small tracheids and being fine textured. And to make this easier, I'm using a small, adjustable engineer's square, and I'm just adjusting it so that it comes to the full width of the shelf, and the we'll use that to mark off the full depth of the housing. Just hold your pencil right up to the groove you've created, bringing your engineer's square across, and marking down the appropriate points, like so, and repeating it on this side as well. It is possible for a log to produce more board feet than was estimated, thus producing an overrun. The final step of marking off, is again, to take the depth (in this case, the thickness of the shelf) using your marking gauge, and you want this to be pretty accurate, so just line it up the outside of the wheel with the edge of the shelf.
In wood, toughness and hardness are fairly strongly related so it would be unusual to find a wood that is one but not the other.
We can use this to create a nice, clean groove across the bottom of where you want your housing joint to finish. Durability in wood is primarily a function of toughness, but since hardness and toughness are strongly related in wood, harder woods tend to be more tough and thus more durable (in the mechanical sense; decay resistance is a separate issue). For wood, hardness is measured by the Janka scale; I am not aware of any scale for toughness in wood.
Once you've cut both sides, the next operation is to remove this waist section, using a chisel and a mallet.
When removing the waist, using the chisel, the best way to do it is to have the bevel side face-down, so that when you hit it with the mallet, rather than the chisel-point digging down into the timber, it will want to lift up naturally, which will help to just remove the waist out.
So, with the bevel side face-down, just move your chisel point up to the timber, lightly tap the back of the chisel.
So once you've cleared out the majority of the waist, you can then use your little groove there that you've put in with the marking gauge, just get the tip of the chisel in there and then just push. So once you've cleared out the remainder of the waist there, it should just be a matter of sliding in the shelf, it should fit nicely, just like that. Safest thing to do , is just to put a dot of glue in the centre section here, and that will be enough to maintain its position.
