Make your own doll mattress for American girl doll furniture and beds with this simple step by step sewing tutorial designed for beginners. I've sewed doll mattresses before in the traditional "box cushion" style, which means cutting six different pieces of fabric, and then accurately sewing them together in a 3D box, with corners matching. I could not believe how easy this doll mattress was to make for Grace's American girl doll. If done correctly the seam will look like the above diagram, and you can see the mattress taking on a box cushion like shape. Once you have clipped seamed all four corners, inside outside the mattress and check your corners. You can fill the mattress with 2" thick foam, bean bag filler, or in our case, recycled pillow and stuffed animal stuffing. You will want to pin the mattress in multiple locations just to keep the mattress tops and bottoms from "moving" as you sew buttons on and ending up crooked.
It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. If you are a perfectionist, you can sew a small tuck into the fabric from corner to corner to enhance the boxed look. I combine that with an "envelope back" cushion cover, like used for pillow shams, where the back just overlaps. I'm slipcovering my neighbor's sofa right now and I think this envelope technique may be perfect for the seat cushions.
This project is more where my talent lies although I have high hopes of making the beds to put them on too.

This is how I made my Grandaughters (x4) mattress for their doll beds, except I did NOT use buttons.
At our daughter's request my husband made the bunkbed for our granddaughter for Christmas, so of course I got out my sewing machine and made the mattresses -- twice! The first set of mattresses won't go to waste, as I figure that our granddaughter's dolls will need a place to sleep when they come down with her to spend the night! McKinzie discovered this awesome DIY Collapsible Room Tutorial from Green and Gorgeous and decided to follow it to create a house full of rooms. Her daughter already had a doll bed and grandma was gifting a stove, sleeping bag, doll clothes, and play food for Christmas.
The couch and chairs were made by searching for DIY American Girl Dollhouse couch and chairs on Pinterest using recycled cardboard boxes and sewing craft material I found around the house.
My lucky niece even had a creative grandpa who made this amazing horse stable for her American Girl horses!
Before we get to what Grace is playing with - and I'm super excited about putting her toys in when she's not playing with them - wanted to highlight a few amazing toys made by you! There's so many amazing projects, I can't post them all - but I hope you take a second to check out all the amazing projects on the Brag Blog!  There are many more projects just as darling as these full of ideas and tips and tricks.
I have tried to download the PDF file of the doll closet with the star cutout but it keeps giving me an error message. My daughter just got her first AG doll for Christmas and we have been searching for a wardrobe.

With an official American Doll bed at $150 alone, though, Santa wasn’t bringing a full dollhouse anytime soon. I quickly realized I needed something compact (a lot of DIY American Girl Dollhouse options were bookcase size) and affordable. McKinzie discovered this cardboard furniture tutorial and created furniture to enhance the living room, bathroom, and kitchen.
This project uses materials that many people already have around the house, so the cost is minimal, especially compared to retail costs. My sister, McKinzie, decided to visit Pinterest to find DIY American Girl Dollhouse alternatives to the pricey originals.
Crafts are a great way for kids to use their imagination to create things for their doll collection. The table top is made from an old cork hot pad for pans that I found at Value village, glued onto of a painted vitamin bottle. On step 2, you place your ruler across the triangle and slide it down until the bottom of the triangle from side to side measures two inches - not from top down.
