PATERSON — A former Passaic County social services worker and her boyfriend have been indicted on charges they stole more than $245,000 in funds intended for the needy. Jecemia Echevarria, who was employed as a member of the Social Services Department's Emergency Assistance Unit since 2002, is facing charges of official misconduct, theft by deception and four counts of witness tampering.
In all, Echevarria and Hayer allegedly misappropriated a total of $245,975 in public funds.

Echevarria is also accused of contacting clients and asking them not to cooperate with authorities after she learned of an investigation into her activity. Valdes, she was responsible for handling the county's Temporary Rental Assistance program, which pays 70 percent of rent, utilities and relocation expenses for qualifying clients. She then would divert the money into her personal account, and use public funds to cover the clients' responsibility.
