Aside from what you may have seen on Mad Men, working in marketing is not limited to making commercials, copywriting or even advertising for that matter.
From the jobs listed to new career opportunities in areas such as search engine optimization or social media marketing, jobs are growing in terms of business needs and popularity. Columnist Kerry Jones shares the state of the content marketing job market based on new research and insights from recruitment professionals. A recent study by Fractl (my employer) and Moz confirmed there is growing demand for content marketing skills. Between January 2011 and January 2015, the number of job listings on Indeed containing “content marketing” or “content strategy” grew by about 350%. While this kind of growth is great news for content marketing job seekers, overall the volume of available content marketing jobs is still low compared to other inbound marketing jobs such as social media, digital marketing and SEO.
Additionally, a lack of hiring budget may be limiting the number of content marketing jobs. According to “The Inbound Marketing Economy,” the average salary for job listings containing “content marketing” or “content strategy” is $61,000. While it’s important to showcase content marketing skills, recruiters also recommend that job seekers should show off the soft skills that make them a well-rounded employee. TopSpot Internet Marketing agrees that technical marketing skills can be acquired with enough training; instead, their team focuses on soft skills during the talent search. From industrial welding supplies to time tracking software, the holy grail of paid B2B advertising is the ability to target decision makers by their job title.

Taking a magnanimous position with ad copy, very light self-promotion, and targeting job titles can be a "deadeye-dick" trifecta for winning clicks. Again, exhaust the presets that mention "logistic(s)." Dial into Job Title - Categories - Seniority to help narrow for the upper crust. Let's search "logistics" in the Title field, and dial out irrelevant results by adding negative keywords in the keyword field (to do this, type the minus sign directly preceding the keyword, no commas between entries).
Now we know that targeting decision makers in LinkedIn by way of Job Title yields pretty clutch results.
While Facebook doesn't offer Job Titles as a targeting attribute, our team has concluded, from a heaping array of successful segment experiments, that when users go out of their way to disclose on the FB profile that they "Like" a specific job title (e.g., "Logistics Manager," "Logistics Coordinator"), more often than not, it's because that's their job title!
List segmentation is the breaking down of your larger main e-mail marketing list into segments based on a number of criteria so that you can display targeted and tailored offers and messages to your subscribers. Aside from the above there are lots of other techniques which you can apply to really maximise the return on your e-mail marketing campaign. My colleague Don Gray wrote a great blog a few weeks ago about the importance of marketing the value of your institution’s degree. Read on to see how much content marketing has grown as a career field in recent years, how much content marketers are being paid, which states have the most job prospects, and more. This uptick in the number of job listings coincides with Google’s Panda update in February 2011, which shifted online marketers’ focus from quantity to quality content.
According to TCG’s recent study on the hiring climate for creatives, 26% of marketing executives reported they expect to hire for content marketing roles in the second half of 2015.
This suggests that despite its surge in popularity in recent years, content marketing has yet to hit the same level of ubiquity as SEO and social media in an organization. More than half of marketers surveyed in a recent study by Contently reported that a quarter or less of their 2015 marketing budget was dedicated to content marketing. If the map above shows your state is a content marketing desert, it may just be due to job listings using different terminology.
The three recruitment professionals I spoke with all mentioned that soft skills still have weight despite the increasingly technical nature of digital marketing roles. Recalling that within the last few weeks, LinkedIn upgraded its targeting platform to include the ability to finger specific businesses and job descriptions, I decided to look into logistics pros as a metaphor for targeting B2B job titles, and share findings here.

Combining multiple targeting elements, for example, Job Title, Age, and Groups, employs the "and" operator; targeted users have Job Title 2, "and" are 25 years of age or older, "and" are members of Group A "or" Group B. Here, we can target by specific job titles or pick from categories of job titles, including job function and seniority. Requiring those 36,000+ to be members of LinkedIn Groups with "logistics" in the title might prune our estimated reach to zilch. You can break down the lists based on a number of criteria including location, age and marked interests.
We can expect more content marketing job growth if these budgets increase in the coming years.
Many of the other states on the list have large metropolitan areas where corporate headquarters and marketing agencies are likely to be based. Our goal is to produce as tightly focused results as possible, so let's target by specific job titles.
Dependant on the tool you use for e-mail opt-ins you can either permanently break down the list or create different segments within the main list so really explore the tool you use (we’ll provide a breakdown of the best tools for e-mail marketing later on).
However, as you can see in the graph below, content marketing still lacks the volume of other keywords.
