One of the biggest hurdles is how to list your location on your resume when applying for jobs in a different state.
Accept that some employers won’t want to interview you, but continue to list your full out-of-state address on your resume.
Some companies only consider local candidates because they’ve been burned in the past by people that said they would relocate and then backed out. Using this approach to apply for jobs in a different city or state should get you a higher number of job interviews without having to lie about where you currently live.
This will get you the greatest number of phone interviews and will keep your resume out of the garbage pile. Biron has worked as a Recruiter for the last 4 years, filling positions up to the executive level within companies across 4 continents. James (not his real name) was living in Boston and wanted to interview for a job in Jacksonville, FL.
Your way could work too- I’m not morally against telling a white lie, but I do know that lies during the interview process often lead to more lies, which can get you in trouble (being forced to lie more to cover up your first lie).
I’d suggest picking a few cities that attract you, and applying for jobs within those cities.
I have been applying for jobs out of state and forgot it mention that I would be relocating there. If an employer is going to run a background check and the company names are on your resume, I’d just go ahead and let them figure it out. I am trying to move from CO to SoCal, I am an IT Manager and to keep my options open I am applying for jobs in Denver and in SoCal. Whether you are looking to expand your job search or want to relocate to be closer to friends and family, finding a job out-of-state comes with challenges.
Your Relocation ReasonEmployers will question why you are looking to relocate out of state for a job, particularly if the job is not a promotion and does not come with an executive's paycheck. ExpenseMany employers may shy away from hiring people from out of the area because of the relocation expense involved. LiesAvoid trying to overcome the obstacle of applying for an out-of-state position by lying about your place of residence.

The Houston Chronicle is the premier local news provider for the country's 4th largest city.
He began in the bio-pharmaceutical industry and now focuses on recruiting for technology companies. He bought a plane ticket, flew down and interviewed, and then flew home to wait for feedback. When a hiring manager asks, have a few reasons prepared to share for why you’re interested in their city. Since Alaska is relatively remote and distant from other US states, you might add a month or two.
I guess the short answer is that there are very few cases where starting a job search a full year in advance makes sense. I have been living and working in Phx for 10 years (went to college here too) and looking to move to Los Angeles, where I was born and have family.
You need to be prepared to overcome the challenges and to explain the reason for relocating.
A local network can help you seek likely job opportunities, provide overnight accommodations when you visit for an interview and help you scope out a likely neighborhood to move into.
If you lie, you will later have to expand on the lie when you are asked to participate in a last-minute interview or if you are offered a short start date. At the very least, they should want to phone interview you to find out why you’re moving. And you can add more leeway if you have a very specialized skillset within your field (a PhD, a lot of experience in a narrow niche, etc), because jobs become more difficult to find as they’re higher in level or narrower in scope. A friend stated to write a follow-up email checking in about my application materials and stating that I have relocated . If you can’t provide a phone number for a company, just explain that they went out of business. So I will not have a job but plan to stay at a airbnb or extended stay while I look for work. The recruiter can ask the system to just provide scores for local candidates, as they are not offering relocation, and all non-locals are out luck.

Use that space for explaining your background, why the job caught your eye, why you’re excited to learn about their company.
You can allay some of these concerns by addressing your reason for moving in your cover letter and on your resume.
That way they know I am from out of state, and why I am currently am still working in another state.
In the past, I have applied for jobs that required my last 10 years of employment be listed on my resume. Is it ok to make up an address for that reason as I will be there in Dallas just not a stable address.
On your resume, add a statement beneath your current address with an estimated relocation date to the new area and, possibly, the reason for the move. If you can afford to move, you may want relocate before looking for a job; that way, you avoid the stigma of applying from out of state.
I have been in my line of work for the last 7 years, so one job on my resume is a janitorial job that I worked while attending college.
Still, no responses from any possible employer even though I am definitely a match for the position based on my skills and experience. For example, if you are moving because your spouse was transferred to a new office, this information would reassure a perspective employer that you are not just randomly applying for jobs across the nation. Keep in mind that a job search out of the area also comes with the added expense of last minute travel costs for interviews, and budget accordingly. I’ve seen my current employer hire many people from out of state because of these reason. I also mention that I do not expect a moving package and that I am available for interviews like a local candidate and that I am available to start work within 2-3 weeks.
