An Overview of the Future of Love, and the Three Stations Framework:

  • Submission: Identification. Here we fall in love, surrender to another, and enmesh our sense of self in the beloved. This is the swoon of love, the joy of connectedness, where the heart feels open and enlivened. There is an openness in this station, where we feel unity with ease.

  • Separation: Individuation. Here we fall out of love, and the pain of alienation arises. This is the angst or longing of love, the pain of conflict, where the heart feels divided, alone, and perhaps misunderstood. There is a difficulty in this station, yet we regain a sense of individuated self here, which the bliss of the first station had blurred.

  • Sweetness: Reintegration. Here we fall in love again, but from a place of expanded consciousness. This station includes the autonomy gained in station two, so the meeting in love is truly of two separate selves: here we experience not the fusion of station one, but a union of two fully individuated selves. Forgiveness and a truly authentic acceptance can occur here, as we recognize the beloved as distinct and separate from us, and discover a deeper appreciation and connection.

Here our teachers introduce us to the central architecture of the ISE conference: the Three Stations of Love. Love moves through these three distinct phases—submission, separation, and sweetness (or identification, dis-identification, and integration). Each developmental station is characterized by different feeling states and different imperatives for behavior. Day 2: Surrender

On Day 2 we explore the first station in the evolution of love: surrender.  In this first station, you are delighted with the rapture and beauty of falling in love. Your heart opens wide as the universe gifts you with a rush of ecstasy, you merge in complete identification with the object of your adoration. In developmental terms, you are subject to everything that you understand yourself to be identified with. If you are at a mythic/conformist level of consciousness, for example, this could be your nation, religion, or community; at a tribal/archaic level, your family or tribe. Your identity is established through its absorption in a larger framework of experience, affiliation, or meaning. You are constantly submitting to the larger system, the family, or group, trying to please the group or family members, maintaining group norms, and participating in shared values. In terms of your belief or faith, you "submit" to, or are embedded in a certainty. Your identity organizes through fusion with the group. You may subordinate yourself to a larger current or force moving through you. And again, at some levels, this might mean you become a true believer in your partner, tribe, or sub-culture, in Buddhism, Integral Theory, progressive or conservative politics, etc.

Day 3: Separation

Here we take a look at the second station of our journey: separation.  In this station, you find yourself moving out of the state of embedment or fusion with your current identity as part of the relationship or group. You have fallen out of love. There may be a feeling of separation, of loss, sometimes of loneliness, or longing for the lost feeling of togetherness, union, and harmony. At the same time, there is persistent conflict with the former togetherness, and there may also be resistance to the changes that are underfoot. By shifting identification, you may begin to have an experience of newfound independence or freedom. This creates a sense of well-being and stability, which lives in paradoxical tension with a sense of alienation and disconnection from larger frameworks and patterns that connect.

Day 4: Sweetness

On Day 4 we explore the final station of our journey through love's evolution: sweetness. At this station, you begin to re-establish yourself as part of a larger identification with the next higher structure or stage, while maintaining your capacity to function as an individual who can now take as object all earlier capacities. You integrate your experience of the previous stations. Having worked out the conflicts, and having learned to respect one another's genuine differences, you re-discover each other as lovers and partners. You once again become a part/whole, including all the previous structures you've navigated and experiencing the belonging of union and the freedom of differentiation. A profound experience of acceptance and forgiveness characterizes this station.

The second annual Integral Spiritual Experience comes to a close with Integral Church, a devotional tribute to love, community, and our shared responsibility to the world around us.  "The next Buddha may be a Sangha," Thich Nhat Hanh suggests—and Integral Church is a celebration of this sacred integral Sangha, an emerging family of awakened minds, bountiful hearts, and practiced hands, scattered all across this planet, each of us serving the evolutionary unfolding of love in our own unique ways.

Meet Your Teachers

For the 2011 Integral Spiritual Experience conference, we drew together some of the world's most respected spiritual teachers—each coming from his or her own particular religious background, and each bringing their own spiritual authority to bear upon the Future of Love teaching. As you participate in this media collection, you will be guided by:
Ken Wilber is the most widely translated academic writer in America, with 25 books translated into some 30 foreign languages. Wilber is an internationally acknowledged leader and the preeminent scholar of the Integral stage of human development, which continues to gather momentum around the world.
Dr. Marc Gafni is a cutting edge evolutionary visionary, a provocative spiritual artist and teacher, academic, public intellectual, author, social activist, and lover of people. He holds a doctorate, written on Nondual Humanism in Kabbalah taken at Oxford University under the co-supervision of Prof. Moshe Idel. Marc is also co-founder and director of iEvolve: Center for World Spirituality, Director of Integral Spiritual Experience, and in this role partners with Integral Life in creating Integral Spiritual Experience.
Sally Kempton is recognized as a powerful meditation guide and as a spiritual teacher who integrates yogic philosophy with daily life. She is the author of The Heart of Meditation, and writes the popular Wisdom column for Yoga Journal. A teacher in the tantric tradition of Kashmir Shaivism Sally conducts conducts workshops and retreats on applied philosophy and meditation.
Diane Hamilton is a gifted mediator, facilitator and teacher of Zen Buddhism and Integral Spirituality. She received dharma transmission from Zen Master Genpo Roshi in 2006, and has been offering Zen teachings to the integral community for years. Diane is also co-founder and director of iEvolve Global Practice community, partners with Integral Life in creating Integral Spiritual Experience.
Robb Smith is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Integral Life, Inc. and Chief Executive Officer of Integral Institute, Inc.  He has been involved in the formation of the Conscious Capitalism movement, the 2020 Climate Leadership Campaign, and the Integral Spiritual Experience series of conferences.
Daphne Rose Kingma is an undisputed expert on matters of the heart. She is the author of ten  books on love and relationships, including The Future of Love: The Power of Soul in Intimate Relationships. Dubbed "The Love Doctor" by the San Francisco Chronicle, she has been a six-time guest on Oprah. Her work has been featured on hundreds of radio programs, as well as in newspapers and magazines throughout the country.
Dr. Warren Farrell is the author of many books, including two award-winning international best-sellers, Why Men Are The Way They Are and The Myth of Male Power. He conducts corporate training and is the only man in the US to have been elected three times to the Board of Directors of the National Organization for Women. He is a teacher, business owner and has done expert witness work in the sex discrimination and sexual harassment area for the US Air Force.
Stuart Davis is all about the hyphens: Writer-Director-Actor-Comedian-Songwriter. His day job has always been rock 'n roll. He has performed over 1,000 shows, released 14 albums, and a television series entitled Sex, God, Rock 'n Roll. Combining original songs, comedy sketches, and monologues, Stu offers a mosaic of mediums that suits his multi-faceted passion.
Coleman Barks is a published original poet and is the preeminent translator of the 13th-century mystic poet Rumi. He has been a student of Sufism since 1977 and performs live with accompanying musicians throughout the country. He taught poetry and creative writing at the University of Georgia for thirty years.
David Darling is an American cellist and composer. He has performed and recorded with artists such as Bobby McFerrin and Spyro Gyra in addition to putting out several solo and small ensemble albums as well as albums of his compositions. His most recent album, Prayer for Compassion won the Grammy for Best New Age Album in 2009.
Rabbi Gabriel Cousens, M.D. is a leading author and world renowned spiritual teacher and expert in raw, living foods nutrition, holistic lifestyle, and complementary medicine. He is Founder/Director of the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, Arizona, and the Culture of Life online community. His an ordained Rabbi and Essene teacher, and an international speaker and teacher.
Saniel Bonder founded the international Waking Down in Mutuality teaching and community. The author of Healing the Spirit/Matter Split and Waking Down, he's a pioneer of embodied awakening and accelerated personal and mutual evolution. Since 1992, he, his wife Linda, and their colleagues have helped hundreds stabilize integrative enlightenment and activate their developmental potential. Saniel and Linda are co-authoring The Human Sun: Radiant Gateways to Your Awakening, Wholeness, and Unique Purpose.
Linda Groves-Bonder is a Senior Teacher and spiritual leader of Waking Down in Mutuality. She is the creator of Six-Step Recognition Yoga™. As a teacher, she emphasizes the utter uniqueness of each person's path and growth. A professional singer and songwriter, Linda just released Joy of Being, a CD of vocal toning for healing and awakening. Saniel and Linda are launching Human Sun University in 2011-12.
Arjuna Ardagh is an Awakening Coach and trains others to be facilitators of Awakening through the Awakening Coaching Training. He is the author of seven books, including the 2005 bestseller, The Translucent Revolution.
Chameli Ardagh is the Director, Founder and Senior Teacher of the Awakening Women Institute. She is a celebrated transformational leader and one of the world's leading pioneers on contemporary feminine spirituality.
Rev. David McCallum, SJ is a Jesuit priest working in the field of adult development, focusing on issues of leadership and spiritual maturation. Currently, he serves as assistant to the president of Le Moyne College for Strategic Development and Leadership.
Tami Simon is the founder of Sounds True, a multi-media publisher dedicated to disseminating spiritual wisdom. Over their 22 year history, Sounds True has produced over 600 titles, been nominated twice for the Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing companies, and is North America's leading publisher of spoken-word spiritual teachings.
Terry Patten is a Certified Integral Coach and a co-author of the book Integral Life Practice. He has worked for many years with Ken Wilber and Integral Institute. He is committed to serving the emergence of Integral consciousness—by writing and educating, and by helping conscious individuals and organizations negotiate extraordinary transitions.
Jeff Salzman is lead teacher at Boulder Integral as well as part of the founding circle. He is co-founder of CareerTrack Training, and has worked in adult education / transformation for twenty five years. For three years Jeff worked side by side with Ken Wilber building the Integral Institute, an international center for integral theory and application. A Divinity School dropout, he has a Masters Degree in Indo-Tibetan Studies from Naropa University.
Sofia Diaz is a hatha yoga master, a holder of the Balasaraswati lineage of the South Indian temple arts and a recipient of numerous meditation empowerments in both Tibetan and Shakta Tantric traditions. She turns the body wisdom practices she is empowered in into accessible teachings and practices for the modern western mind. She has taught Feminine Spiritual Practice for 27 years and is a core founder and faculty of iEvolve: Global Practice Community.
John Forman, OblSB, is a postulant for Holy Orders preparing for ordination to the priesthood in the Anglican Communion. He is also a Benedictine oblate of Mt. Angel Abbey and a Eucharistic minister. John has served as an advisor or consultant to numerous religious communities and organizations as well as to individual ordained, professed, and lay men and women. John is also a contributor to Integral Christian Ministry studies and the Managing Partner of Integral Development Associates.
Rabbi Miriam Maron, B.S.N., R.N., M.A., is a Soul Healer who leads us bravely and gently into spiritual alchemy with her teachings, chants, and entrancing movements. She is an erudite teacher, author, and singer/songwriter (8 albums) and conducts workshops and retreats for interdenominational audiences across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Israel. Miriam also has a healing and mentoring practice where she employs the long-neglected mystery wisdom of Jewish Shamanism and ancient Kabbalah, which she has been a noted pioneer in restoring.
Rabbi Gershon Winkler is the author of Magic of the Ordinary and Daily Kabbalah, which encapsulate his nearly two decades of study and practice of the long-lost wisdom of Aboriginal Judaism. His ever-fresh and pragmatic teachings from the ancient wisdom of his people have won the hearts of interdenominational audiences across the Americas, Israel, and Europe. The Jerusalem Post describes him as combining, "the wit of Robin Williams with the wisdom of the Baal Shem Tov."
Wah! creates a unique mix of pop, world music, and reggae. She has created extensive music products for yoga and meditation communities and travels worldwide, offering her music of devotion and spiritual discourse. As described by Australian Yoga Life Magazine, "Wah! just might be a devi. She sings with the voice of a goddess, reflecting the deep devotion and reverence of a seasoned bhakta."
Jessica Roemischer is a pianist and educator who has developed unique methodologies to free the human spirit. Her insight into the dynamics of human emergence undergirds her endeavors. In performances and workshops-as well as in her acclaimed music program at Riverbrook Residence for Women-Jessica is sharing the catalytic power of music with individuals and groups throughout the United States and internationally.
