BERGEN
Real Life Stories,
4
October – 3 February 2013
Installations, paintings and
sculptures from 10 of China’s
leading contemporary artists,
at the Bergen Kunstmuseum.
The museum’s biggest coup
is the unveiling of a new and
previously unseen piece by
artist and political activist
Ai Weiwei – no longer under
house arrest, but still banned
from overseas travel. Look out,
too, for the eerily lifelike figures
sculpted by Xiang Jing, and
painter Yue Minjun’s sinister,
grinning self-portraits

EINDHOVEN
GLOW, 10-17 November
Eindhoven’s fortunes were
founded on the lightbulb
industry – hence its nickname,
Lichstadt (city of light). For
a week each November, the
GLOW festival honours this
heritage, filling the streets
with dramatic, large-scale
light installations. Last year,
United Visual Artists exhibited
Volume

,
while the Van
Abbemuseum was wrapped in
flickering flames; on a smaller
scale, maverick arts collective
We Make Carpets created an
eerily beautiful alfresco ‘glow
carpet’, charged with light and
as magical as any flying carpet.

BRUSSELS
Chocolate Week,
1-11
November
The city succumbs to seven
days of indulgence. Workshops,
guided walks and talks on
topics such as ‘Chocolate
and Literature’ explore the
city’s long chocolate-making
tradition, and there are plenty
of tastings and demonstrations
of the chocolatier’s art.
Restaurants around the city
offer specially themed menus
in honour of the occasion,
including the art deco Bozar
Brasserie at Rue Baron Horta 3.

LONDON
Lord Mayor’s Show,
10
November
This spectacular parade is an
annual tradition, dating back
to the 13th Century. On the
second Saturday in November,
the newly elected Mayor of
the City of London (not to
be confused with Mayor of
London Boris Johnson), must
make his way to the Royal
Courts of Justice to pledge his
loyalty to the crown. Riding in
a resplendent gilded coach,
the Mayor is accompanied
by a jubilant, three mile-long
parade of acrobats, dancers,
marching bands, musketeers
and floats, which snakes its
way through the streets. At
dusk, head to the riverside
fireworks over the Thames.
