Media frenzy
Film and music buffs have a packed
schedule this autumn, when both the
Unsound music festival
(14-21
October, unsound.pl) and
Etiuda &
Anima animation festiva
l (23-29
November, etiudaandanima.com)
take over the city. The former has
performances from figures in avant-
garde and electronic music such as
Lustmord and Theo Parrish.
Rynek
Underground
relates city history with
interactive technology. Look for the
entrance in the Market Square’s Cloth
Hall, before heading underground
and exploring the cellars of medieval
Krakow (podziemiarynku.com).
Eating and drinking
If there’s one name that’s synonymous
with culinary quality in Poland, it’s
Gessler
,
and Krakow is finally home
to a restaurant from Warsaw TV chef
Adam Gessler himself. Located in the
Francuski Hotel at ul. Pijarska 13,
the elegant Gessler restaurant offers
refined European cuisine with an air of
Old Poland. For a more humble snack,
head to ul. Augustianska 4 where
you’ll find the ever popular
Hummus
Amamamusi
,
for – you guessed it – a
plate of delicious hummus, served
with accompanying pita.
Getting to the centre
Wizz Air provides two point-to-point
transfers: one runs between the
airport and Krakow city centre (€13
single, €26 return), and the other is
between the airport and Katowice city
centre (€6 single, €12 return).

Lucky Pub
at 13 Velyka Vasylkivska
Street is a beery joint within a stone’s
throw of Arena City and some of Kyiv’s
sultriest supermodel hang-outs. The
second floor balcony is favoured by
young blades for its superior views of
the pedestrian traffic.
Golden
Gate Irish Pub
(
goldengatepubkiev.

(15
Zolotovoritska Street) and has a
mix of expats and English-speaking
locals. Book ahead if you need a table.
Eating and drinking
Shlyapa
or
The Hat Restaurant
(14
Gorkova Street, +380 44 287 2222)
is a buzzing joint with cool black and
white décor. The salo (cured meat)
comes highly recommended (50
hryvnia per portion/€5).
Viola’s Bar
(1
a Shevchenko Boulevard, +380 44
235 3751)
is a basement beer bazaar
and a lively but cosy place to begin
your evening. It attracts a range
of Bohemian and humanities types,
earning a reputation as a spot for the
kind of expats who don’t really like to
think of themselves as expats.
Getting to the centre
Wizz Air flights arrive at Kyiv’s
recently revamped downtown airport
Zhuliani. Mini-buses and trolley
buses for the city centre depart from
outside the airport regularly. A taxi to
most city centre destinations will cost
around 120 hryvnia (€10).
