Fine design
If the food-centric ‘Eating by Design’
exhibit at
Designhuis
(
Stadhuisplein
3,
+31 (0)40 232 9720, designhuis.nl)
doesn’t sate your need for deliciously
modern design, discover the latest
buzz-worthy innovations at the
annual
Dutch Design Week
(20-28
October, ddw.nl). Expect more
than 1,500 exhibitors in dozens of
locations across town, including the
much-anticipated graduate show of
the Design Academy Eindhoven, which
invariably demonstrates the ability of
Dutch design to scale new heights.
Eating and drinking
With an interior styled by Maarten
Baas and Piet Hein Eek, and
a location inside the modern
Parktheatre,
Park & Pluche
(
Theaterpad 3, +31 (0) 40 215 6256,
parkenpluche.nl) has artistic allure.
Chef Ralph Drost’s fried tuna terror
and the sesame-covered salmon
receive rave reviews, while the
three-course à la carte Cabaret menu
at €22.50 per head has a variety
of seafood treats – if it’s cabaret
night. For a mix of DJs head to
De
Vooruitgang
(
Markt 11, +31 (0) 40
243 3995,
de-vooruitgang.nl).

Jazz in the Baltic
As the oldest and most prestigious
jazz festival in the region,
Jazz
Jantar
(19
October – 4 November)
attracts thousands of music lovers
to Poland’s Baltic coast. As always,
expect some of the world’s top
names to perform under such themes
as Avant Days and Young Jazz
(
jazzjantar.pl). Looking for a fun and
educational day trip for the family?
Just one hour away from Gdansk is
Malbork
,
home to a UNESCO-listed
medieval fortress, built by Teutonic
Knights in 1406 and the largest (by
area) castle in the world.
Eating and drinking
It’s easy to get a taste for the freshest
flavours of the sea in this area, but
at cosy
Santorini
on Swietojanska 61
(
santorinigdynia.pl) in Gdynia you’ll
even be transported to sunny Greece.
Or try artsy
Spoldzielnia Literacka
(
spoldzielnialiteracka.pl) in seaside
Sopot for budget-friendly Polish food
with a quirky, laid-back feel.
Getting to the centre
Wizz Air provides a point-to-point bus
transfer between the airport and city
centre for €4 (€8 return).

Medieval markets
The huge
Westfalenpark
south
of the city centre is perfect for
an autumn stroll; there’s a lively
fleamarket on 28 October. There
are also amazing views from the
220-
metre-high
Fernsehturm TV
tower
which was built in 1959 to
honour a horticultural show. From
31
October to 4 November, the
streets around Dortmund’s Alte
Markt square are teleported back to
the 14th century for the medieval
Hansamarkt
.
Expect locals in period
dress, music, theatre, and plenty of
food and drink
Eating and drinking
Dortmund retreats indoors
during autumn, but with so many
restaurants, cafés and bars in the
city centre it’s never hard to find a
cosy place to recharge. Near the
centre, the
Chocolat Café
(
Neuer
Graben 74) is a lovely place to
enjoy a cup of hot chocolate or
coffee with cake. You can also
enjoy breakfast with pancakes;
this is the perfect place to curl up
on the sofa with a book. In the
north of town, the modest-looking
Siedlerklause
restaurant (Maienweg
60,
janmoellmann.de) is in fact an
excellent place to sample regional
cuisine paired with French wines.
Getting to the centre
The airport shuttle bus takes 22
minutes and costs €6.
