been dismantled, allowing the city bugler
to play his daily noon refrain from the
rooftop without distraction.
Before then though, there’s much to
look forward to for Lublin’s cultural
cognoscenti. Kicking off in mid-October
is the week-long Theatre Confrontations
festival, now in its 17th year. One of
Poland’s major celebrations of the
performing arts, it will feature acts from
Moscow, Minsk, St Petersburg and Kharkiv,
as well as Polish talent such as Teatr
Nowy from Łódz´ and Grupa Concidentia
from Białystok. From 6 November, the
focus is on contemporary dance, as the
International Dance Theatres Festival
takes centre stage at the Chatka Zaka
Academic Cultural Centre; later in the
month, the audience at the Lublin Cultural
Centre will choose the winner of the
Full-Length Film Festival, a celebration of
independent film-making. The same venue
also stages late October’s Freaked-Out
Films Festival, which screens feature,
documentary and animation shorts. Last
year, its line-up included such creations
as
The Man Made of Vinyl
,
The Art of
Complaining
and the unsurpassable
Lullaby
for 4 Bats
,
a cult animation classic in which
a black cat has a “boundless adoration of
table tennis”. Only in Lublin.
