KOBO TOUCH eREADER
HOW DOES THE NEWEST CHALLENGER
TO THE KINDLE MEASURE UP?
With the Touch, Canadian company Kobo
turns the eReader race into a two-horse affair
with a serious rival to Amazon’s Kindle.
In appearance it’s not unlike a slightly
larger, wider iPhone – in other words,
stylish and pleasing – but it has a quilted
back that makes it easier to grip. Like the
Apple products, it has a single button
and touchscreen. Functions are operated
by simple tap controls. It is simple and
painless to use, incorporating useful
basic functions such as adding highlights,
performing searches and reading PDFs.
The Touch weighs in at a featherlight
185
g, which belies the fact that the Kobo
Books service offers access to more than
2.2
m eBooks – one million of which are
absolutely free. The device can hold up
to a thousand eBooks at any one time,
and supports English, French, German,
Spanish, Dutch and Italian. Avid readers
can expand the Touch’s memory with a
32
GB MicroSD card, which enables the
device to hold up to 30,000 books – more
than most public libraries.
The Touch comes in five different colours.
Battery life is excellent and the device can
last uncharged for up to one month. It even
smiles when in sleep mode.
