RE CARLO
This quite wonderful corner
spot in downtown Verona
makes a very good case
for being the best football
bar in Italy. It’s not just the
remarkable collection of
football scarves the cover
every inch of the ceiling – from
Hungary, Russia and beyond –
it’s the easy-going atmosphere
reminiscent of an English pub.
Local regulars stride in, shake
hands with the bar staff and
order a pint as if they were in
London or Leeds. Popular with
rugby fans, too.

LÁNCHÍD SÖRÖZÓ
Hungary may not be involved
in Euro 2012, but its capital is
the ideal spot to take in the TV
action and head up to Poland
or neighbouring Ukraine
should the mood take. This
friendly neighbourhood bar
offers the Romanian Digi Sport
channel for live Premiership
and Spanish league action,
the large TV in the new dining
room in contrast to the classic
archive shots of Puskás-era
Budapest. (That’s Ferenc
Puskás, the prolific post-WW2
Hungarian player, who scored
84 goals in 85 international
matches for Hungary and
won three European cups, the
Champions League of its time).
Upstairs, original copies of
Képes Sport
magazine lend a
similarly retro touch.

DUBLIN
Slightly tucked away off the
main drag of Petra Doroskenka
Street but well signposted, this
simple Irish pub with a terrace
should be the ideal spot to
watch the summer ’s sporting
action in the liveliest and most
foreigner-friendly of Ukraine’s
venue cities. Laudably, the
Dublin doesn’t go overboard
on Irish decorative trinkets,
but rather presents a tasteful
photographic record of the visit
of legendary boxing promoter
Don King to this friendly tavern,
accompanied by Ukrainian
boxer Vitali Klitschko (below).
