NORWAY
Indeed, road tripping in Norway is all about
forgetting the destination and focusing on the journey.
Experience at first hand the difference between being
there and getting there by setting off from Aurland
and heading down the Lærdal Tunnel (at 24.5km the
longest road tunnel in the world), speeding past its
spooky neon blue and green lights and arriving at
Lærdal in the fastest possible time. Then, on your
return journey, opt instead for the scenic route 1,000m
above the same tunnel, along the slow, cold and
hostile-looking plateau of ice and rocks on National
Tourist Route Aurlandsfjellet (4). As the road starts
to descend toward the Aurlandsfjord, pull in at the
Stegastein Viewpoint to see what you missed on your
outward journey. A tribute to Scandinavian design,
the 30m walkway here is constructed with wood,
steel railings and a clear glass barrier at the edge,
suspended 640m above the fjord landscape. Be brave
and tiptoe to the edge – the view is well worth the
daunting drive and walking “the plank”.
Whether you use Stavanger, Haugesund or Bergen
as base, the drives below will enable you to enjoy the
views and experience the unique Norwegian scenery.
Remember that
many times the
fjord is the road.
