Velevetka (www.velevetka.pl) at ul. Długa 45
has modern versions of classic Polish cuisine.
Of the many hotels, few have friendlier staff
than boutique Hotel Artus; central, comfortable
and contemporary (www.artushotel.com.pl).
Sopot, Poland’s Monte Carlo, is a beach
resort frequented by generations of Poles and
an increasing number of moneyed foreigners.
Here the attractions are not so much museums
or galleries, as chic leisure and people-
watching. Strolling is almost a sport in itself,
both along the main drag of Bohaterów
Monte Cassino and along the pier, the longest
on the Baltic coast. For something more active,
there’s windsurfing, sailing, tennis and cycling.
Sopot was the birthplace of out-there German
actor Klaus Kinski, who was in fact born at
ul. Kosciuszki 10, now transformed into a
café-restaurant in his name. For seafood
with a sea view, get a table on the upper floor
of the Tawerna Rybaki at Al Wojska Polskiego
26 (www.tawernarybaki.pl). On the same
stretch, and always packed, Bar Przystan
(www.barprzystan.pl) at no. 11, is Sopot’s
most famous seafood eaterie, but be prepared
to wait for a table.
For a real taste of Sopot, the five-star
Sofitel Grand (www.sofitel-grand-sopot.com)
on ul. Powstanców Warszawy is where kings,
presidents and shahs stayed back in the day. If
you can’t find an affordable room there online,
then the Pensjonat Irena (www.pensjonat-irena.
