SKI AND THE CITY
Fly to: Oslo
Set 525m above sea level and
a mere subway ride from the
centre of Oslo, the
Tryvann
Vinterpark
is the perfect
place to mix city and snow.
Having been extended in 2011,
this small Norwegian resort
now boasts 18 slopes and 11
lifts with good facilities for
families and ski racers, and
floodlit slopes five days a
week. As the site of the World
Snowboarding Championships,
it comes into its own as a
world-class freestyle park.
Down in the city, head to one
of the 35 restaurants around
the Aker Brygge harbour area
(
akerbrygge.no), formerly
a dockyard, to find local
specialities of reindeer, whale
steak and
lutefisk
(
dried fish) on
the menu. The shops are closed
on Sundays, however.

AWAY FROM THE CROWDS
Fly to: Belgrade
Serbia may not be the obvious
choice for skiing, but thanks to
its mild winters and abundant
snowfall, it’s got plenty to offer.
As the largest of the nation’s
ski resorts,
Kopaonik
boasts
55
km of tree-lined slopes
served by 24 spanking new
chairlifts, all set on the 2,017m
Pancˇic´’s Peak (also known
as Suvo Rudiste, and Serbia’s
highest) and surrounding
national park. While there’s
four-star accommodation
such as the Hotel Mount
(
hotelmount.com), even that
has an unconventional edge –
think slope-side market stalls
and tiny wooden shacks on the
mountain blasting out techno.
Be prepared to accept many
a raki shot from welcoming
locals, washed down with a
strong Lav Pivo beer.

A VIEW TO A THRILL
Fly to: Katowice
Nestled in forests under
the rugged alpine peaks of
the High Tatras mountains,
Tatranská Lomnica
is simply
stunning, and for the best
views of this national park
area, take the cable car up
to the 2,624m peak of the
Lomnický Štít. When it comes
to skiing, this Slovakian resort
has beginners in mind, with
nursery slopes dotted around
the base of the ski area, and
a 2.6km sledging run too! But
big mountain freeriders won’t
be disappointed, with plenty
of off-piste accessed via the
Lomnické sedlo chair lift.
There’s a few hotels in town,
but those after a bit of luxury
can check into the historic,
four-star Grandhotel Praha spa
hotel (ghpraha.sk) that seems
straight out of a fairytale.
