RIGA ON A PLATE
If the gastronomic scene in the Latvian capital has flourished in the last few years, it’s
only a reflection of its diversity. We’ve selected our five favourite venues that offer
traditional fare with a modern, experimental and cosmopolitan twist
RESTAURANT BERGS
Riga’s foodies nominate this as
the finest restaurant in the city,
and we’re inclined to agree.
Chef Kaspars Jansons’ artful
creations include Latvian perch
with coconut broth, lemongrass
sauce and crab wontons, and
wood pigeon with sprouted
barley and dried figs.

ALUS ARSENALS
Set in an 18th-century building,
the ‘beer’ arsenal serves
traditional Latvian cuisine in a
fun and friendly atmosphere.
Order smoked Riga sprats, pork
ears stuffed with cheese or the
infamous metre-long sausages
alongside the house-brewed
beer.

MONTEROSSO
One of the oldest restaurants
in the city, at Monterosso you
can tuck into upmarket Italian
fare. Its thin-crust pizzas are
superb, and simply prepared
mains, such as grilled sea
bass and venison ravioli, will
transport your tastebuds to
Rome.

Its dishes live up to the venue’s
quirky, bright-blue frontage,
due to chef Roberts Smilga’s
experimental tastes. We’re
talking rainbow trout with
red pepper and kiwi, pork
with parsnip and pear mash,
and pumpkin seed ice cream.
