Evelio Lucero
A vendor at the Ubud town market does brisk business with
her main merchandise — flowers, to be used as ingredients
for the ubiquitous Balinese basket offerings. Drawn by the
loud colors in the scene, Evelio slapped on a wide-angle lens
and zeroed in on the repeating patterns. The seller’s busy
pose and her big, black-and-white plastic bag made this
amusing, intriguing image work.
Ed Manuel
A Balinese woman makes an offering at one
of the many altars at Tirta Empul. Ed found
this scene to be cluttered, so he decided to
shoot from a low angle to eliminate distracting
elements in the background. The subject’s
yellow dress and red sash made her stand out
from the scene. Unique angles often go a long
way in making an interesting visual.
Art Dedace
Holy water from unseen mountain
springs bless devotees at the Tirta
Empul temple in central Bali. Art felt
the overwhelming spirituality of this
place, and photographed accordingly.
“
Whole families go to the pool to
wash and be anointed or cleansed,”
notes the company executive. “There
were old people with young children,
even men with skins full of tattoos.”
The basket offerings further hint at the
spiritual nature of these waters, and
provide a bright counterpoint to the dark
but oh-so-dramatic background.
