ON CLEAR MORNINGS,
during my
short commute to work, I often see
a familiar silhouette in the horizon
reminding me that I live in Davao City.
Despite the quick mushrooming of new
buildings in the cityscape, Mount Apo
still towers above them all.
I was born and raised in Davao,
but to call this city home was not a
personal choice until a few years ago.
As soon as I finished college in Manila,
I made the decision to come home
and start a career. Perhaps easing into
adulthood seemed less intimidating
within the comforts of the familiar, or
maybe the accelerated pace felt in the
country’s capital was just too much
for this
probinsyana
at heart. But, for
whatever reason, it was a decision that
I haven’t regretted since.
Located 946km from Manila in
the south-eastern part of Mindanao,
Davao City is the island’s center of
trade, commerce and education. If
people come to Manila in search for
a better life, I’d say people stay in
Davao because they have found life
to be good here. This is why the city is
a melting pot of diverse cultures that
include indigenous tribal communities,
Visayan, Chinese and Muslim migrants,
and “expatriates” from around the
Philippines and abroad.
Sun, sea and
city are all within
a 20km radius
