Domestic goddess Nigella Lawson offers tips on
how to enjoy food minus the guilt
TEXT
CHARMAINE BAYLON
TV cook Nigella Lawson may not be first on
your list for health tips. But to help celebrate
her new show,
Nigellissima,
she shares some
sensible advice about eating and indulging.
You can remember these when you’re on the
road too.
•
Eat in moderation
“
Some of the recipes in
Nigellissima
are indulgent and meant to be
occasional treats. I don’t believe in healthy
(
or unhealthy) food as such — it is all about
balance.”
•
Have sweets on special occasions
“
It’s true
that dessert is featured much more regularly
in my TV shows than at home. At home I
serve dessert only when we have guests or
it’s a special lunch or meal,” she says. “For
example, my Nutella cheesecake is most
decidedly fattening, but I make it about four
times a year and eat one slice each time. That
doesn’t seem over the top to me!”
•
Make the rules
“
I don’t have any secrets,
nor do I stay slim! Like many women, my
weight goes up and down,” she admits. “I
eat proper meals and don’t go in for round-
the-clock grazing (though I sometimes break
that rule at night when I need a little snack to
keep me going!), and I do exercise regularly. I
never used to, but I know I can’t diet so I have
to exercise. It’s a necessary trade-off, and
actually, it feels good!”
Nigellissima will air on the BBC Lifestyle
channel in Asia every Wednesday starting
May 15.
Relaxing rituals
Pamper yourself before your next flight
Treat yourself
1
Scents are well-known de-stress agents so try dabbing the Aveda
Stress-Fix Concentrate on your wrists; smell and breathe in. Inhale
through your nose to a count of four and exhale to a count of eight. The
concentrate contains soothing organic ingredients such as lavender,
lavandin and clary sage essential oils; skin-conditioning sunflower and
olive oils; and vitamin E.
2
Dab the concentrate on your neck. Massage the area using
circular motions.
3
Also apply the concentrate on your shoulders, using a press-
release motion with the rollerball. Raise your shoulders to your
ears, hold then drop. Repeat.
4
Rub a scented lotion on your hands (try Aveda’s Stress-Fix
Body Lotion); smell and take a deep breath. Rotate your wrists.
Massage the palm of your right hand with the thumb of your left hand
using circular motions. Repeat on the other hand. Then massage the
back of your right hand with the thumb of your left hand, stroking from
knuckle to wrist. Do the same on the other hand. For more information
