SIMILAR TO MANY
Easter mornings,
I was woken by a knock on the door.
Unlike other Easters, though, I woke
up in the jungles of Temburong, in a
cottage perched off the waters of the
Temburong River and next door to a
prince of Brunei.
Well, what would have been next
door to a prince of Brunei, if he hadn’t
changed his mind about showing up.
As it happened, an advance party had
come and then gone, and instead of the
prince, I was next door to a very sweet
Australian couple who had arrived the
day before. We were at what used to
be the jungle getaway of the ruling
Bolkiah family, but was now Ulu Ulu, a
relatively new wilderness resort in the
Batu Apoi forest.
Its very name speaks of its
remoteness:
Ulu
means “at the end,”
or “upriver”, which, in Borneo, means
away from civilization. Established
in 1991, the Ulu Temburong National
TOREEF
Kristine Grace treks
through the jungle and
dives deep into the sea
in order to prove that
there’s nothing boring
about Brunei.
