Students gather at a designated spot
on Silom Road, just a stone’s throw
from the city’s financial centre and lush
Lumpini Park. The school is tucked
in one of the many alleys that make
up Bangkok’s neighborhoods. On
this particular Sunday, the students
comprise one American, three
Taiwanese ladies and a Dutch family.
Nusi, the flamboyant owner of the
school, introduces the instructor Ms
Koong, who leads the group to the
local market. Here everyone is given a
basket to share the load of groceries.
After a brief introduction to a coconut-
