I FIRST WENT
to Anilao to marvel
at the sky. Driven by a whim, we’d
arrived a little before midnight under
a sky filled with meteors falling by the
hundreds every minute. We were there
because, inspired by a newspaper
article about the upcoming Leonid
meteor shower, I picked the quietest
place I could think of to catch the show.
After dark that same day, we had
thrown our bags in the back of the SUV
and headed off on a long drive from
Makati to Batangas.
This was my first encounter with
Anilao. It was a retreat away from
the city, an incredibly quiet piece of
paradise where people could go without
too much advance planning. A dark
sky had descended and there was
silence all around. Back then — not
15
years ago — the drive was a five-
hour effort, and a four-wheel drive
was needed to get through the steep
and rocky hillside trails, and past
the handful of sleepy resorts on the
Calumpang Peninsula.
