LOCAL LIFE
The best way to experience South
Korea is to stay with a local family
visit Homestay Korea’s site
homestaykorea.com)
or spend
time walking around the non-touristy
neighborhoods, like mine. Try the street
food, go to a
noraebang
(
karaoke) or relax
at the
jjimjilbang
(
Korean spa).
ALONE TIME
Just a few meters from our place is a
Caffé Bene branch
(
co.kr).
I usually go there and order a tall
macchiato after dropping off my son at
daycare in the morning. I take it to the
second floor and watch the university
students rush to their classes.
JUST BROWSING
Since a lot of students reside and study in
the nearby universities, there are many
small businesses in our area. My son and I
spend time just checking out the pencils,
memos and trinkets at the neighborhood
Alpha stationery shop. There are famous
cosmetics stores too, like Etude House,
Holika Holika, Innisfree, Skinfood and The
Face Shop.
NOT JUST FOR
STUDENTS
Nearby Kyung Hee University
(
Hoegi-dong
1,
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul;
edu)
is one of the most beautiful campuses
in South Korea. The road to the main gate
is lined with gingko trees, and inside you’ll
find numerous cherry blossoms and maple
trees. The Peace Auditorium, an example
of classic European architecture, is also
impressive. Performances are held there
every weekend.
HISTORICAL SITES
Also nearby is Uireung, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. It’s the royal tomb of King
Gyeongjong, who lived between 1688 to
1724.
One shouldn’t miss Seoul’s palaces
too. The grandest of them all is the
Gyeongbokgung.

COMPLETE MEAL
There are lots of restaurants in my
neighborhood. Chaeseondang, a famous
Korean shabu-shabu chain, is one of
my favorites. We’re also close to a lot of
restaurants offering
pajeon
(
Korean pizza).
Try the
haemul
pajeon, a seafood version
with with pickled onions on the side!
SHOPPERS’ PARADISE
When my sisters from the Philippines came
here for a visit, they enjoyed shopping for
cosmetics and accessories
.
In Seoul, the
best place to shop is Namdaemun Market.
