then and there that he was our kind of
guy; we’ve always liked people with a
touch of crazy, the kind that are blind
to barriers. It was at Alessandro’s,
however, where all the screaming
began.
The receptionists and the
housekeeping staff thought Lilou was
very cute, and would call out every
time she passed, “Hi,
Le
lou!” Our
daughter, though, would invariably
respond with a shriek. We wondered:
Was it the way they softened the first
vowel in her name that irked her so
much? “
Je veux aller à notre maison
qui est très loin
,”
she would sometimes
say — meaning, “I want to go to our
house that’s far away.”
“
We can’t go back to Aigues-Mortes
just right now,” we’d respond, and try
to reassure her that it can be good here
too. She seemed a little convinced
when we rented a motorbike to look for
more permanent lodgings, exploring
the beaches all around this island
along the way. We discovered beautiful
places — one in particular, a cove on
a part of the island called Doljo, left
us enchanted. It was used mainly by
fishermen, so there were multicolored
boats parked on the cliff, while
others floated on bamboo platforms
a few meters from land. There was
a white-sand beach called Momo
where there was a terrific kind of light,
all soft brilliance. Then there was the
beach in Danao which had the perfect
orientation for the sunset-on-sea that
we would have liked to have.
While we have not yet gone to see
the tarsiers, we have been discovering
the artisan culture of Bohol. Visits to
