The true genius of Art Fair Philippines is
not just that it brings together the best
of contemporary Philippine art (which it
does), but that it is such a wide and diverse
collection easily accessible to such a
broad audience. To be displayed at the
high foot traffic area of The Link car park,
the glow-in-the-dark building between
the Makati Shangri-la Hotel and the
Landmark Department store, the new art
fair is a carefully edited and thoughtfully
curated showcase of works by some of the
stalwarts of Philippine art along with those
of the most promising young artists. All
types of media will be represented at the
fair that will likewise feature rare pieces by
two local artists of rock star status: a yet-

Back for a fourth year, the Asia Hotel Art
Fair shakes up Hong Kong’s art scene with
its unusual approach to exhibiting art: Over
3,000
works by Asia’s leading names in fine
art — Japanese contemporary artist Takashi
Murakami and Chinese artist Xiaogang Zhang
lead the pack — will be laid out within the
plush confines of luxury hotel rooms. The
whole idea is to provide a chill vibe to the
otherwise stiff atmosphere that attends most
art exhibitions, and what better way to do
that than put them up on display in 86 of
the Mandarin Oriental’s guest suites? An
extensive variety of works will be on show,
from photography to paintings to sculptures,
along with art lectures by industry experts,
tours and artist talks.
to-be-unveiled piece by Ronald Ventura,
and an installation by sculpture genius
Gabriel Barredo, especially commissioned
for the art fair. Barredo’s remarkable oeuvre
ranges from intricately carved functional
art (such as standing clocks and winged
chairs) to the late Michael Jackson’s
Manila concert garb.
A pop-up café, VIP lounge and video
viewing area, styled by creative consultant
Kenneth Cobonpue, within the exhibition
venue will be open to visitors. Parallel
events will include a special exhibit of
Philippine contemporary art at the nearby
Ayala Museum that will herald the start of
the art fair, and the launch of the Philippine
Art Awards which will be held during the
fair period. Visitors may also enjoy all-day
casual dining and cocktails in the early
evening courtesy of Kai Restaurant and The
Straits Wine Company.
