MAYA CALICA
THE UNCONVENTIONAL
LOVE STORY
Hitchcock
Academy Award winners Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren shine as director Alfred Hitchcock
and his wife, Alma Reville (who was also editor of some of his films). The movie portrays the
couple’s unique love story, and takes place during the making of his scary masterpiece,
Psycho
.
Today’s hot young actresses portray Hollywood stars of old: Scarlett Johansson plays Janet
Leigh (known for the unforgettable shower scene in
Psycho
)
while Jessica Biel plays actress
Vera Miles.
THE FANTASY ADVENTURE
Oz the Great and Powerful
This Walt Disney flick imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved
character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time
circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled from Kansas to the vibrant Land
of Oz, he thinks fame and fortune are his for the taking. But then he meets
three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda
(
Michelle Williams), who aren’t convinced he’s the great wizard everyone’s been
expecting. Reluctantly pulled into the problems facing the Land of Oz and its
people, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. In
the process, Oscar transforms himself into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz,
as well as a better man.
THE MAGICAL
COMEDY
The Incredible Burt
Wonderstone
Steve Carrell and Steve Buscemi
play superstar magicians Burt
Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton,
who have ruled the Las Vegas
strip for years. But perhaps the
duo’s biggest illusion is their public
friendship, since they’ve grown to
loathe each other. With cutthroat
competition from guerilla street
magician Steve Gray (Jim Carrey),
whose cult following surges with
each outrageous stunt, Burt and
Anton do what they can to save
the act — both onstage and off — if
only Burt can get back in touch
with what made him love magic
in the first place. Rumor has it that
magician David Copperfield served
as a special consultant.
