dishes increased, he made a menu and
expanded to a second location, just
down the road, allowing him to serve
more than just eight people at a time.
Reflecting fondly on the
neighborhood, Chester points out
a friend who frequents three cafés
regularly once a week to write poetry.
One such café may be Caf Art, an
airy and light space with beautiful
high ceilings visited by those in film
and art. Mu-Gian Chen, the owner,
opened the café to host readings,
art exhibitions, dance and music
performances. “I like undiscovered
talents and many amateur artists just
need a space to show their craft.” He
himself studied theater.
His aunt, an English literature professor
at Shida University, lived in a house
provided by the government, which
was later demolished to make room for
a new apartment block.
Back then the restaurants in the area
had no signs, no menus or licenses.
They were simply home kitchens
open to the public and catering mainly
to large families. It’s not surprising
that this tradition has led to the
neighborhood being one of the top
destinations for food.
This tradition lives on at James’
Kitchen. Until recently, owner James
Tseng cooked whatever he found fresh
from the market in the morning, but
