and Legian, the natives wear board shorts and speak English
with an Aussie drawl, yet celebrate their odalan temple
festivals with utmost devotion. During special occasions, one
might even see a full-blown religious procession right on the
beach, greeted by bewildered looks from bikini-clad sunbathers.
Beyond the concrete-encrusted tourist areas, Bali’s native
character is in full view. From the capital we drive north
to explore the countryside, where we see postcard-pretty
scenes at just about every turn. Traditional Balinese homes,
their walls displaying intricate designs, hem the roads in the
