This morning, you’ll be going a little
further afield — head north-west up
Real Street until you reach the walls
of Intramuros opposite the Lyceum
campus, then proceed south down the
wall. You can grab a
tapsilog
(
fried pork
or beef, fried rice and egg) breakfast
(
PHP100) at “the Wall” of inexpensive
eateries lining Muralla Street.
After your meal, you and your
family can walk up the ramp to the
top of Intramuros’s walls; stop by the
Baluarte de Dilao — an extension of
the fortifications, complete with replicas
of cannons — as you proceed south to
Victoria Street.
Descending to street level, exit the
gate, cross the underpass to City Hall,
then cross Taft Avenue to reach the
National Museum (PHP150 for adults,
PHP50 for students; Tue-Sun 10am-
5
pm). The former Senate building now
houses some of the Philippines’ most
valuable works of art, including the
massive
Spoliarium
painting by Filipino
artist Juan Luna.
Crossing back to City Hall, take a
Divisoria-bound jeepney (PHP8) to
ready to walk some way to
reach their entertainment
of choice.
On the western side of
the park, Museo Pambata
(
PHP100, Tue-Sat 8am-
5
pm; Sun 1pm-5pm)
provides fun and learning
for children, its walls
crammed with kid-friendly
exhibits on everything from
the human body to a play
neighborhood to an actual
moon rock.
On the opposite, eastern
end, the Rizal Park Children’s
Playground (PHP10) at Agrifina Circle
provides a clean, expansive space
where your kids can let off some steam.
As the sun begins to set, cross
Taft Avenue to get a jeep to City Hall
(
PHP8); disembark and walk through
the underpass to Intramuros. From the
Victoria Street entrance, ride a tricycle
(
PHP40) back to the Plaza San Luis
Complex; the Ristorante delle Mitre
(
CBCP Building, 470 Gen. Luna St; tel:
+63 2 559 5220) across the street
serves delicious and inexpensive family
meals, with portions made for sharing
(
PHP100-150 per head).
Shoestring
budget for day 1:
PHP603 per person
Take your kids to the Rizal Park
Children’s Playground;
