QUIET TIME
If you want to veer away from
the crowds, go to Green Balls. See if
you can hike the 500 odd steps to the
beach and caves!
At Green Balls,
you can have the
beach to yourself

MUST-DO’S
Wake up early to witness the locals
give their
canang sari
(
a little woven tray
with flowers, crackers, coins, candies,
etc.) offerings on the streets or along the
beach. Swim or learn how to surf. Go
kayaking or stand-up paddling, or rent
a boat in Nusa Dua. Watch the
kecak
(
Ramayana Monkey Chant and Fire
Dance). Snap a photo with the giant
Garuda statue at the entrance of
Pecatu Indah Resort. Buy seafood
at the public market in Jimbaran,
or have a seafood dinner on the
beach. Also visit Uluwatu Temple
and the macaque monkeys.

SPECIAL
OCCASION
During Nyepi or the Balinese New
Year in March, electricity and sounds
are not allowed for a day and a half — so
expect total darkness and silence at night,
and peace and quiet around the island.
There’s also the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade, where
massive statues of demons are shown off
on the eve of Nyepi. It’s fascinating to
watch people build these monster statues
weeks before the event. It’s a community
effort and the whole town chips in.

SOUVENIR SHOPPING
Unlike the main towns of Kuta or Ubud, the Bukit doesn’t have established shopping areas
although it is not without good stuff. I usually buy
sarongs
from the ladies at Pantai Padang-
Padang. The ones here have more colorful patterns and are cheaper than the ones in Kuta or
Ubud. You can also get nice batik-patterned bags and purses at Jimbaran.

TIPS FOR
FIRST-TIMERS
Bali waves are generally for advanced
riders, so surfers should know their skills
and limits. Head only to areas that are
suitable for you. And if you decide to ride a
motorbike, wear a helmet. As we say here:
Hati-hati!
(
Be careful!)”

HUNGRY?
There are many options in the
Bukit, from local to Western to fusion.
At a warung, I recommend trying
local dishes such as
nasi
and
mie
goreng
(
fried rice and noodles), and
spicy padang and
jawa
food.
