N/ Sampler Vol. 3
Independent music label Number Line
Records has an eclectic and often
amazing roster, which offers much for the
discerning listener to enjoy. Highlights
of their third collection (available for free
download) include Third World Summer’s
Displaced Voices”, Some Gorgeous
Accident’s “Luminescence”, and Slow
Hello’s “Minty Fresh” — all of which
will rock your summer, whether it’s with
glorious guitars, infectious beats, an
abundance of charm, or all of the above.
Ciudad
Follow the Leader
It’s easy to forget Ciudad have been around
for over a decade now; this might be due
to their newfound younger following, or
perhaps simply to the fact that their music
still sounds fresh. Over the course of several
albums, they’ve honed their pop songcraft
to near-perfection. This latest full-length
sports impeccably catchy — and this time
around, more playfully, lushly produced —
songs such as “Things I Don’t Need” and
You Know the Answer, Just Follow the
Leader” that combine occasionally cutting
lyrics with singalong appeal.
Swissy
One Hour by the Bed, the
Rest Is in My Head
Swissy’s second album belongs in that
languid, laid-back place where pop and
jazz meet, while several other influences
folk, electronica — pass through and
say “hi” as well. It’s a sweet, sunlit affair,
marked by Swissy’s smooth, sultry-where-
needed vocals and undeniably winning
tunes. Listening to this album, you may
well find yourself transported to ideal
scenarios where “Life is good” or “Where’s
that waiter with the drinks with the little
umbrellas?” would be all you’d need to say.
