Until we traveled to check out KL
,
s food scene, I
,
d never gone
on a serious food tour. The most I
,
d done was a kind of food
trip where we devoured everything on the menu, giving us
satisfaction, however fleeting (and additional pounds, which
somehow lingered). But a proper food tour, given the right
itinerary and a knowledgeable guide, does something else:
along with the flavors of the dishes, it opens up a sense of place
and takes you deeper into the culture. It piques a curiosity that
takes you beyond the obvious – I found myself wanting to try
several versions of one dish – and leads you to people, who in
turn offer even more insight into the local history and culture.
Shooting our cover in KL, one of South-East Asia
,
s melting pots,
with its complex culinary tradition and varied
spread, was quite challenging (as working
between bites is bound to be), but
ultimately very rewarding. It took us a bit
closer to the soul of
the city.
