Like all other kinds of coffee plants, the
liberica tree grows in the mountains, its
preferred elevation being at least 300m
above sea level — which is probably
why the highland areas of Cavite and
Batangas have been the principal
sources of barako in the Philippines.
Despite the fact that there are far fewer
coffee farms here than in the past, the
coffee-growing tradition remains strong
in towns like Lipa, Alfonso and Indang.
The last decade, however, has seen
a huge coffee farming boom in the
island of Mindanao, with the southern
province of Sultan Kudarat now the
country’s top producer of liberica.
