IF YOU NEED
proof that the
contemporary art scene is alive and
well in the region, you only have to
look at Singapore. Major events in the
city, like the Art Stage and Singapore
Biennale — as well as collaborations
between local and international
museums and art galleries — have
fueled a lot of interest, participation
and growth from artists, art enthusiasts
and visitors from all over the world.
Add to that an innovative art storage
facility like the Singapore Freeport and
some recently launched art venues,
and you have an exciting mix that will
hopefully keep the industry dynamic
and refreshing for a long time. Wait for
the official opening of the National Art
Gallery in 2015 in its new 60,000sqm
home, and you have even more art to
look forward to.
But these developments are not
surprising: the Singapore government
has been supporting art initiatives, even
creating a blueprint and a Renaissance
City Plan, for the past 20 years. Further
steps have also been taken by the Arts
and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR),
a committee started in 2012 with aims
of promoting quality events and active
participation in the arts.
All these strategies help to establish
a strong foundation for local arts and
culture in the long-term – and can be
beneficial to partner communities and
institutions. To get an idea of how the
contemporary art scene in Singapore
is evolving, we profile four different
organizations for insights.
