But like many other Chinese cities,
you can grab the best meals on the
street, such as a little noodle shop
a few doors down from the City God
Temple that’s the perfect spot for hand-
made dumplings. While close to the
West Gate market a few bakeries offer
regional breads and pancakes that help
cold and hungry sightseers keep going.
It’s only 9am but now the town is
bustling. The old banking premises
have opened their heavy doors,
temples are being dusted, shops are
setting out goods on the path. Pingyao
is once again a major stop on a great
route, a route now trod by curious
tourists.
