paper into your luggage tag with
your updated details.
Tie a yellow ribbon
Secure your

MAYA O. CALICA (DRAWSTRING BAGS)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1
Cut out two sets of 13” x 32” rectangles from
each of the fabrics (finished size is roughly 12” x 15”).
Step 2
With right sides facing, pin a piece of calico and
a piece of lining fabric together, then sew a ½” seam
along each of the long sides. Turn right side out and
press with an iron.
Step 3
To make the paths for the drawstring cord, fold
the short sides twice: first by ½” and then by 1”. Stitch
close to the edge.
Step 4
Fold the bag in half, with the outer fabric
facing each other. Make sure the hems line up, then
sew along the sides with a quarter inch allowance, just
stopping 1 ½” from hems to make space for drawstring
cord. Turn the bag right side out.
Step 5
To make the cord, cut two strips of twine cord
measuring 29”. Attach a safety pin to one end of the
cord, thread through both holes/paths working your
way from left to the right. Repeat but in reverse with the
other tie, letting it pass from right to left. Repeat steps
one to five to make the second bag.
Step 6
Using fabric ink, I wrote
Labada
(
for soiled
linens) on one bag and
Labango
(
for clean clothes) for
the other, and added silly illustrations. Let ink dry then
make sure to heat treat design by laying a fabric over
the drawing and pressing with an iron for about two
minutes.
Now all you have to do is plan where to go next and
make good use out of your new bags!
