Creative shows are popping around the region this month. Visit
these three cities for top-notch exhibitions and street parades
The art of Asia
TAIPEI
Art Taipei 2012
November 9–12
What it is:
An extensive exhibit with over 2,000 pieces, half of which are from abroad. This
year also marks the 20th anniversary of organizer Taiwan Art Gallery Association.
What’s new:
It now has 150 galleries. Art Taipei will also give Asian artists the attention they
deserve, highlighting works by Yayoi Kusama and Ai Weiwei, among others. Plus, American
photographer Diane Arbus will show her black-and-white square photos — an Art Taipei first.
You can expect:
A special zone for Chinese classical artworks. The results of a photography
workshop by local singer-songwriter Cheer Chen to help the victims of Typhoon Morakot in
south Taiwan are also for sale, with proceeds going to charity.

SINGAPORE
Affordable Art Fair
November 15–18
What it is:
Art dealer Will Ramsay started an event over a decade back in London to show
that art can be appreciated and bought by everyone, regardless of wallet size. It is now held
annually across 13 major cities. Pieces go for as low as S$100 (PHP3,381).
What’s new:
Now on its third year in Singapore, the art fair has been so successful that the
organizers have decided to stretch it to four days instead of the usual three, and expand to
4,000
sqm of space instead of 3,000sqm for more displays and activities.
You can expect:
A laid-back fair for experiencing art. There are 85 galleries from all over the
world, displaying everything from contemporary paintings, sculptures, prints and photography.
Kids can let their creative juices flow at the Children’s Art Studio, while you take the time to head
visit printmaking demos and art talks.

HONG KONG
Arts in the Park
Mardi Gras 2012
November 17–18
What it is:
Established in 2001, it is the
largest annual community arts event in
Hong Kong with about 3,500 students
and youth participating. It includes a
thematic parade, dance performances and
art stalls.
What’s new:
This year’s theme is
“
Circus: A Feast for the Senses”, and the
parade — “Art Fun in Causeway Bay” —
will be held along the streets of Wan Chai
District for the first time.
You can expect:
Lots of color, with

ft-tall puppets, elaborate costumes and
headdresses, dancing, and art pieces made
by 600 primary and secondary school
students. Visit the creative art stalls for a
free face-painting session or to learn how
to create masks and puppets. There will
also be a Parade Artwork Exhibition from
November 5 to 13 at Festival Walk and
Cityplaza.
