Among the temples in the
Shikoku Pilgrims Trail,
Zentsuji is considered to
be one of the best
Kyoto
Koyasan is probably the most
convenient place to sample
shojin ryori
as a part of the temple stay package.
Kyoto may be the next most convenient
spot, and in a way is more flexible as
some visitors enjoy the temple stay
part; but after having sampled
shojin
ryori
once, they want more variety.
Others may prefer the temple cuisine
without staying overnight. Luckily, in
Kyoto, both are available a la carte.
In keeping with the Myoshinji
Temples’ philosophy of hospitality, two
of its sub-temples welcome visitors
as guests. Taizoin offers regular “Zen
Experience” sessions that guide visitors
through meditation followed by a
calligraphy lesson — another form of
meditation without the strict silence.
Later on, after a pick-me-up of some
high-octane Japanese macha tea, it’s
time to stretch your legs on a tour of
